but I was at the Tim Lincecum game the other day (Nats actually won) (Not to mention the Nats were supposed to lose to the Unit last night for his 300th, and they F'd that up too) and looked in horror upon this:

A statue honoring former Senator, Walter Johnson. A good enough idea, right. I was horrified by it. It was ghastly. Some three-armed, scaly, mutant version of The Big Train.

It appears that underworld demons are rising up to devour Johnson's right leg and his three-appendaged arm is covered by demon scales.

I think that they were going for 'movement' but it just came out looking like something from the mind of Dante Alighieri cased in bronze.

You left out they the statue doesn't say he played for the Senators. The Nats are trying to claim that Johnson was actually a Nat simply b/c he played in the same city. Can the Clippers lay claim to having had Magic or Kobe play for them then?

And the angle of the first Johnson pic can't help but lead you to phallic thoughts

I haven't been able to bring myself to go to any of the games yet. I have tix for the Red Sox when they come here later this month, but the Nats have screwed up so much this season (on and off the field) I just can't justify going. It doesn't help that on my days off, I've had the choice of teams such as Pittsburgh and San Fran to go watch.

It would be nice if rather than appropriating the history of the Minnesota Twins organization (Walter Johnson), the Texas Rangers organization (Frank Howard), or possibly the greatest hitter in the history of the game (Josh Gibson) who played for the Homestead (Pennsylvania) Grays who adopted Washington, DC as their "home away from home" and played many of their games at Griffith Stadium, home of the Washington Senators, now known as the Minnesota Twins, they would celebrate their own history with statues of Tim Raines, Andre Dawson, and Gary Carter and the great farm system that produced greats such as the above three and Randy Johnson and Larry Walker among many other very good players. Of course it would probably be a really painful exercise to look back and realize that the organization was run a million times better in Montreal than it is currently being run in Washington, so they might not want to do that, but still it would be nice if they celebrated their own history rather than somebody else's.

Couldn't agree more with you AJ. I always compare the Nats organization with the Colorado Avalanche (ex Quebec Nordiques from the NHL) and can't believe that they took a path so different. The Nordiques left Quebec after the 1994-95 season but were always aware of the importance of keeping the team's history with them. The Avs even organized a pre-season game against the Montreal Canadiens in 2002 in Quebec city and players wore a Quebec Nordiques shirt for the occasion. Today, the Avs are still very popular in the province of Quebec.

On the contrary, it seems that the Nats organization has made every effort possible to try to dissociate itself from the Expos, like by changing almost everybody in their organization or by giving retired numbers to active players. They can't even recognize their only HOF member(G. Carter); I wonder why Dawson wanted to be intronized as a Cub...

Meanwhile, in Montreal, people are still publishing books about the Expos, because they can't identify themselves with the Washington Nationals or any other team. I think they call it living in the past...
