What If???? The Alternate Story of A-Rod
It's nearing Christmas time of 2003 and Red Sox fans everywhere are hoping to get A-Rod and Magglio Ordonez as presents, and to lead them to their first world series in 86 years. They already got all star pitchers Curt Schilling and Keith Foulke and getting Mags and A-Rod could be the icing on the cake. Imagine that, the Red Sox could be world series champions.
Deal would trigger Nomar-for-Ordonez
After weeks of talk and speculation about the proposed trade to send AL MVP Alex Rodriguez to Boston for outfielder Manny Ramirez, Texas Rangers owner Tom Hicks is ready for a resolution.
Hicks said Wednesday that no agreement had been reached and that he has set a deadline of 6 p.m. ET Thursday. If no deal is made by then, he said Rodriguez will remain with the Rangers.
The Rangers owner said he spoke to Rodriguez on Wednesday.
"I told him, 'I don't know whether tomorrow, I'm going to wish you bon voyage or welcome back,'" Hicks told The Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Hicks didn't immediately return a message left by The Associated Press at his office. Rangers spokesman Gregg Elkin, however, confirmed Hicks' deadline.
Commissioner Bud Selig also had established a Thursday afternoon deadline for a deal or end to the talks.
Meanwhile, if a deal is consummated, the Red Sox have conditionally agreed to trade shortstop Nomar Garciaparra to the White Sox for outfielder Magglio Ordonez, ESPN's Peter Gammons has confirmed.
The Red Sox might also include reliever Scott Williamson as part of the agreed-upon trade of Garciaparra to Chicago, provided the Rodriguez-Ramirez deal is completed. Garciaparra does not have a no-trade clause, so Boston has the right to trade him to any team.
The Dodgers, once thought to be a likely trade destination for Garciaparra, apparently are no longer in the picture. White Sox general manager Kenny Williams wouldn't discuss the agreed-upon deal with Boston.
"I just prefer not to speak to anything. It's business between clubs. When anybody has something to announce, they'll announce it," Williams said Wednesday.
Hicks and Red Sox owner John Henry have been discussing a swap of Rodriguez for Ramirez, the sport's only $20 million men.
Talks have bogged down over the sheer magnitude of the money involved -- more than $300 million remaining on the two contracts, including deferred money -- and the Rangers' demand that Boston pay a big chunk of Ramirez's salary in addition to more than $179 million due Rodriguez.
Boston has balked at paying part of Ramirez's salary. Even without it, the Rangers would already save about $81 million in the deal. Talk has recently focused on whether the Red Sox would include another player in lieu of cash.
"From the Rangers' point of view, we're only going to do something that makes our team better," Hicks said. "We have no intention of compromising."
Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein and Rodriguez were meeting this week with an official from the Players' Association to discuss the deal.
The union would get involved if there was a renegotiation of the record $252 million, 10-year contract Rodriguez signed three years ago; any change would have to add some benefit for the player, according to baseball's labor contract.
Epstein, Rodriguez, and Rodriguez's agent, Scott Boras, were expected to meet with the union Wednesday for more talks, The Associated Press reported.
Henry hasn't responded to e-mails or calls from AP. But following a series of skeptical postings about the trade on a Red Sox fan Web site, a participant identified as "JohnWHenry" wrote, "Come on now. Don't start to waver on us. It's the holidays. Be of good cheer! It's going to be just a great, exciting season. Hang in there."
The postings came at 4:26 a.m. Henry has confirmed that he uses that screen name for the "Sons of Sam Horn" bulletin board.
The Red Sox did make one deal involving an infielder Tuesday, acquiring Mark Bellhorn from Colorado to replace free agent Todd Walker at second base.
Walker could be part of Texas' contingency plans for replacing Rodriguez. They've talked to Walker's agent about signing him to play second, which would mean moving second baseman Michael Young to shortstop.
The Red Sox have had arguably the busiest offseason, acquiring right-hander Curt Schilling from the Diamondbacks and signing free-agent closer Keith Foulke, who pitched for Oakland last season. Adding Rodriguez and Ordonez would significantly alter a lineup that led the majors in runs scored last season. The Red Sox were painfully close to reaching the World Series, but lost to the Yankees in an 11-inning Game 7 of the AL Championship Series.
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Breaking News:Alex Rodriguez has been traded to Boston for left fielder Manny Ramirez!
Press Conference at Fenway (December 21, 2003):
"Welcome to our off-season press conference. We will be taking any questions and Alex Rodriguez should be out here in a moment."
"Theo, how were you able to work out these trades, was it all done on your own?"
"I did do a lot of work but I couldn't have done it with my Co-GM, Ninetyfourgoalie. He helped make calls and really helped seal the deal by getting the Player's Union to agree to allow Alex Rodriguez's contract restructured."
"Who is this mysterious Co-GM?"
"Ninetyfourgoalie has been a lifelong Red Sox fan and he is in it all for the interest of the team. I have to go, Alex will be out in a few minutes to answer some questions."................

Re: What If???? The Alternate Story of A-Rod
"Alex, are you excited to come to Boston?"
"I am very excited for this season and for hopefully a long career here. I think we have what it takes to make it to win the World Series."
"Mr. Rodriguez, do you really think you will be able to break the curse?"
"Haha, I've done a lot of research on that curse thing since I found I was headed here. I'm really not sure about it, but I think we will be able to defy all odds and win a World Series."
"Alex, do you think you can repeat your MVP performance from last season?"
"I will do my best to exceed that performance. I will do whatever it takes to help my team win."
"What do you think of the big rivalry between the Sox and Yankees and how will you respond to it?"
"It certainly has a lot of history involved but I'll treat a game against the Yankees the same way as any game, I'll just go out there and work hard. One more question."
"What do you think of the signing of Curt Schilling this off-season?"
"I think it was a great move. He is one of the best pitchers in the game and I am relieved that I don't have to face any of these Red Sox pitchers."

Rules
- I will be using Mizerak's Negotiator App Version 2 to offer Contracts
- I will only be allowed to sign 4 free agents per season, only 2 85+
- I can not make more than 3 big trades (involving an 80+ overall or peak player) per season
- I will try my best not to "cheat" the AI in trades
- I will be using Perfect Ratings but not in Commish mode
- Failure to follow a rule will force me to send a 90 peak player to the Yankees

Re: What If???? The Alternate Story of A-Rod
It's the beginning of the season and Red Sox fans are anxious to see their new star. The Red Sox open up their season in Baltimore, then travel to Tampa Bay before coming up to Boston on the 13th to play the Blue Jays. Many Boston fans will probably be making the trip to Baltimore to see the opening series. An excited Red Sox fan says, "I am definitely making the trip to Baltimore. I already bought tickets for all three games and I can't wait to watch A-Rod beat up on the O's!"

Re: What If???? The Alternate Story of A-Rod
A-Rod's First Game
Inning 1
Sidney Ponson starts off for the Orioles by knocking off Damon and Mueller to start the season. A-Rod gets a single in his first at-bat for the Red Sox and then steals second. But, David Ortiz was unable to capitalize, grounding to short.
Pedro Martinez starts off in style, striking out Brian Roberts and Miguel Tejada to get a 1-2-3 first inning.
Inning 2
Magglio Ordonez gets the inning started by smacking a double to left field. Millar capitalizes right away, singling to right and driving in Ordonez. Red Sox 1, Orioles 0. Trot Nixon then doubles to right as Millar moves to third. Ponson then walks Bellhorn to load the bases Jason Varitek. Varitek smoked the ball but didn't quite have enough as it's caught, but the throw is not in time and Millar tags up and scores from third. Red Sox 2, Orioles 0. Next, Ponson throws a tough slider but Damon is able to connect and blast it to right field for a triple as Nixon and Bellhorn score. Red Sox 4, Orioles 0. Bill Mueller grounds to third but Damon books it and scores. Red Sox 5, Orioles 0. Ponson walks A-Rod and then Ortiz smokes one right at Ponson but it's caught and the inning is over, but the Red Sox take a huge lead.
Rafael Palmeiro gets a single but its not enough as Pedro sits down the Orioles.
Inning 3
Magglio Ordonez and Kevin Millar reach base on errors to make it 1st and 2nd with none out. But Nixon strikes out and Bellhorn grounds into a double play to end the threat.
Pedro gets Jack Cust and Luis Matos out right away but couldnt finish them up as Brian Roberts and Melvin Mora both hit singles to bring up Tejada with men on 1st and 2nd. Tejada delivered, doubling down the third base line and scoring Roberts. Red Sox 5, Orioles 1. Javy Lopez strikes out to end the inning and leave men on 2nd and 3rd.
Inning 4
Johnny Damon hit a 1 out single but that was the lone Red Sox hit of the inning.
Rafael Palmeiro leads off with a single to left. Pedro strikes Jay Gibbons out but walks Tatis and Cust to load the bases. But, Pedro does what he does best, and strikes out Luis Matos and makes Roberts pop up to right as the Orioles strand the bases loaded.
Inning 5
Ponson starts off by walking Ortiz but erases it as Ordonez grounds into a double play and Millar pops up to center to end the half inning.
Miguel Tejada got the lone hit of the inning but the Orioles couldn't do anything to move him.
Inning 6
John Parrish comes in for Ponson and walks Nixon but Bellhorn pops out and Varitek grounds into a double play to end the inning.
The Orioles had men on second and third with one out but couldn't bring them home.
Inning 7
Parrish gives up a walk to A-Rod but he was the lone base runner.
Pedro Martinez strikes out the side to grab his 10th strikeout of the game.
Inning 8
Parrish started off by getting two outs but then plunks Nixon with a pitch in the back. Bellhorn then singled to move Nixon to third. Varitek walked and Parrish is pulled in favor of Todd Williams, who strikes Damon out on a nasty slider.
Timlin comes in for the Red Sox and immediately gives up a single to Palmeiro. Gibbons then strikes out and then Tatis hits into a fielder's choice leaving a man on second with two outs. Timlin then walked Cust and gave up a single to Matos, who drives in a run. Red Sox 5, orioles 2 Keith Foulke comes in and Brian Roberts singles to drive in another run. Red Sox 5, Orioles 3. Mora lines out to end the inning.
Inning 9
Bill Mueller leads off with a single, and A-Rod grabs a single as well. ortiz walks to load the bases as Magglio Ordonez comes up. Magglio grounds into a double play but a run comes home anyways. Red Sox 6, Orioles 3 Millar grounded to second to end the inning.

29. Despite a home run by Doug Mirabelli, Gabe Kapler, and 2 by A-Rod and a solid game by Wakefield, the Red Sox lost in extras. Twins 8, Red Sox 7
30. Two big home runs helped the Red Sox win this game. David Ortiz hit a grand slam in the 1st and in the bottom of the 8th, Kevin Youkilis, who made his MLB debut today, got his first major league hit: a home run. Red Sox 9, Twins 2
TRADE!!!
The Royals offered us a trade. Unfortunately, a relief pitcher was not part of it but we add a big time player. We trade pitching prospect David Pauley and OF prospect David Murphy for RF Juan Gonzalez. Gonzalez is 34 and doesn't have much time left but he can still produce, and that's all we can ask out of him right now. Hopefully we can grab a RP before the trade deadlne.
Amateur Draft
Round 1: SP Michael Bowden 63/94
Round 2: LF Nick Evans 62/84
Round 3: RP Ross Detwiler 56/82
Round 4: RP Jeremy Sanders 48/82
Round 5: RP Chris Williamson 48/79
Round 6: RP Jay Pinato 48/72
31. Bronson Arroyo pitches 8 shutout innings and Embree finsihes the game out. Red Sox 6, Twins 0

Re: What If???? The Alternate Story of A-Rod
So why are David Ortiz and Jason Varitek listed under pitchers when they haven't pitched?

When you try to get an All-Star, they're usually way overvalued. I'd look at second-tier players which are much easier to get.

OK good, I was going to say that if you have them pitching, then you are in dire need of pitching help. :p

Re: What If???? The Alternate Story of A-Rod
RED SOX ACQUIRE STREET FROM ATHLETICS
The Red Sox and Athletics have been in talks about a deal that would send RP Huston Street to Boston and a mix of starters and prospects to Oaklad. There are rumors that Trot Nixon and prospect Craig Hansen may be involved, along with others. Oakland has been trying to acquire an outfielder that can boost their wary offense all season.
Official Trade:
The A's send RP Huston Street to Boston for OF Trot Nixon, RP Mike Timlin, OF Brian Daubach, and prospects Craig Hansen, Chris Smith and Adam Stern. Craig Hansen has the potential to be a solid closer and Stern has the potential to become a strong centerfielder that can hit for some power. Smith could be a back of the rotation starter in a few seasons.

That does not look like a realistic trade.

Re: What If???? The Alternate Story of A-Rod
The prospects part is pretty good - Street for Hansen (who was pretty highly touted at the time), Smith (middle reliever) and Stern? The A's were always willing to deal for future help, and those three plus some more would make sense for them.
Nixon and Timlin, being higher paid and older, don't make sense in the trade. Daubach was cheap but replacement level, so his part doesn't make sense either. But at least the prospect haul is close - although in reality Oakland would have demanded Delcarmen, Papelbon, or Meredith and another player, AND those three, in return for Street.
Anyway - nice dynasty, nicely done. As a sox fan, I was against the A-roid trade rumors in 2003, and looknig back I'm glad. I'd rather have had the Manny act, and now Bay, then dealing with the conroversy and moodyness and Boras-opting-out crap.
