Brain Fart-Stupid Question
Formula for BABIP, from any pitcher in any era can be obtained the same way batting average is, right???
Batting Average = H/AB.
So to figure BABIP, we would make H=(H-HR) and AB=(AB-SO), which leaves us with:
(H-HR)/(AB-SO)
right???
I know that should be it, but damned if my brain isn't saying I'm forgetting something.
Am I?
EDIT: Well, since we're talking about pitchers, it would be:
(HA-HRA)/(ABA-SO) or Hits Allowed minus Home Runs Allowed divided by At-Bats allowed minus strikeouts.
Re: Brain Fart-Stupid Question
BABIP
(H-HR)/(AB-K-HR+SF)
Re: Brain Fart-Stupid Question
Also, if you don't want to calculate it yourself, FanGraphs has it for each player in the "Advanced" section on their player pages.

Thanks man, I WAS forgetting something. The home runs OK, I should've remembered that, but boy I totally forgot about the sac flies.
Were sac flies even recorded years ago?? How would that affect figuring BABIP in the early 20th century?
Re: Brain Fart-Stupid Question
Sacrifice flies used to be lumped in with sacrifice hits.
They're small enough to have a negligible effect on BABIP, though, particularly over the course of an entire career. FanGraphs has BABIP for all players throughout history.
Admittedly, though, BABIP isn't really relevant when evaluating past players. It's uses pertain mostly to evaluating current performances and predicting the future.

Yes and yes.
Just go to www.fangraphs.com and in the search box on the upper left, type in a player.
It has also has multiple daily articles on a variety of subjects, including a section devoted entirely to fantasy. :)
Re: Brain Fart-Stupid Question
Nevermind, I just tried it, and it gave me season by season, and it hasn't asked for any money yet.

Oh man HGM got you good. Fangraphs actually sends you a bill at the end of each billing cycle (May 15th) for every page you've loaded up, not to mention fangraphs is located in Europe so you're going to get charged for international surfing too.

Yeah, and to top it off, they don't actually calculate anything, either; rather, they just post semi-random numbers that look fairly accurate to confuse people. You really got boned.
Re: Brain Fart-Stupid Question
It's all larger digits too, like 7's, 8's, and 9's.
