What, if anything, would it take to move someone like Derek Jeter?
Let's say the Rockies offered Tulo or the DBacks offered Stephen Drew for him straight up. Think the Yankees would really do it? Everyone knows it would be a lopsided trade, but if the other teams were somehow willing to do it, can the Yankees really trade their marquee player?
I can think of a few other examples like Oswalt or Chipper, but they don't quite have the history and significance to their city like Jeter does, and I can see both of them being traded. Pujols, Peavy, Webb, and other players can all go to other teams and we can understand it's a payroll thing, but the Yankees don't have any problems like that. The only immovable players I keep thinking of are other Yankees like Posada and Mariano, since they also have the history and such.
So I guess it's two questions: Can the Yankees actually trade Jeter even for a lopsided deal, and are there any non-Yankees you can't possibly see being traded to other teams because of their symbolic significance?

Re: What, if anything, would it take to move someone like Derek Jeter?
It's irrelevant since Derek Jeter has a no-trade clause as a 10-and-5 player. I don't see any reason why he'd think about leaving the Yankees, so it doesn't matter if the Yankees would do it. It's entirely his choice. The only way he will leave the team is if they choose not to re-sign him. The same applies to Mariano Rivera, and Jorge Posada (no trade clauses as 10-and-5 players).

Re: What, if anything, would it take to move someone like Derek Jeter?
He is untouchable. until he is a true detriment to his team; errors rising, ba/obp dropping DRASTICALLY it could never happen.
Chipper I think could be traded and DEFINATLY Oswalt. Pujols is th eonly guy I could see as being untradable. IF the following list can be traded...
Randy Johnson
Johan Santana
Griffey Jr
Piazza
Bonds (tho the gm backed out lol then let him walk)
get the picture.
But one thing those guys didnt have was pizzaz. They didnt have the rings, and the adoration of the fans. Now if he were to say to the fans "Look I want to thank all of you but there is an offer on the table that will help this team for many years to come (like getting Linsecum, Sandoval and Sanchez)" then they MIGHT be able to do it but it would HAVE to look like he wanted it to be done and went to them. Thats the only way I could see it working.

Chipper is in the same place as Jeter... he has a 10-and-5 no-trade clause, so unless he WANTED to be traded, there's no way he would be, and it sounds like both sides have every intention of him finishing his career as a Brave. Roy Oswalt doesn't have 10 years yet, but he might already have a no-trade clause in his contract. I'm not sure.

Re: What, if anything, would it take to move someone like Derek Jeter?
I think what nydodgers was looking for, is what would it take if a no trade clause didn't exist here.
I would think the Cardinals would need more then what the M's got for Griffey to move Albert...they would need an ace pitcher, or another hall of fame bat to even start the conversations i imagine.
Chipper and Jeter won't be moved, likely....but what kind of deal would the Braves need to move Chipper? likely a future replacement, and then some....and I don't think any team is going to offer that, nor would the Braves ever accept it....so it's sort of a moot point

Re: What, if anything, would it take to move someone like Derek Jeter?
Yeah, there are a million reasons why such trades wouldn't happen. I was just wondering that if all of the pieces actually came together to make it feasible, what it would take for a team to trade that player.
I think TNP said it best when he said the player would have to agree to it, and make it look like he wants to go, and getting an extremely lopsided trade.

Re: What, if anything, would it take to move someone like Derek Jeter?
If it was me in the situation, I would never take him. No way would I pay him $20 Million! He is aging, already has been a bad SS, and now his offense is dropping. Not to mention that a trade involving him won't happen, due to his NTC and love of NY(And their love affair with him)

Re: What, if anything, would it take to move someone like Derek Jeter?
I think it would take the Yankees being out of the playoff picture for 2009.
Jeter and the Yankees having an agreement that Jeter will be resigned by the Yankees in 2010.
The trade must bring in talent that will improve the team in 2010.
If i was a player, I'd agree to that. I take 2 months to go play for another team, so that my team is better next year.

Re: What, if anything, would it take to move someone like Derek Jeter?
Why would a team give up enough talent for the Yankees to trade Derek Jeter when he would end up re-signing with the Yankees in 2010? They'd be paying for a guaranteed rental, outside of draft picks maybe. But why would the Yankees feel alright about losing their draft picks when they want to add talent by trading Derek Jeter?

I dunno, you never see a team trade for a player they have no hope of resigning.

Re: What, if anything, would it take to move someone like Derek Jeter?
They made an attempt to re-sign C.C. though. If it was possible for C.C. to agree to re-sign with Cleveland after the 2008 season (during the season), there's no possible way the Brewers would have made that trade. No team would trade for Derek Jeter if he already agreed to go back to the Yankees in 2010, especially if they'd have to give up high-caliber players.

Well, I was assuming that the DJ back to NY would be on the DL. I guess that I didn't make that clear.

well if new york got enough talent to remove their picks....then sure, give up the picks to get solid minor league proven players or prospects.
Let's take the convo off of Jeter or Jones...and pick someone like Webb, Peavy, etc...Halladay, Beltran etc.
what would it realistically take to move them? 2 every day players, two prospects and one minor leaguer?
-
Re: What, if anything, would it take to move someone like Derek Jeter?
Beltran I'd trade for a capable OF (a Jeremy Hermida-type player probably would be about right), a middle of the line starter (like a Matt Cain), and a decent prospect or two.

Are we pretending they don't have no-trade clauses again (aka "suspending reality")? ;)

yes, no no trade clauses, or the player wants to leave for some reason
and mets guy, that seems like a lot of an aging beltran

Re: What, if anything, would it take to move someone like Derek Jeter?
Halladay is a great example. I don't think anything short of a ludicrous trade like Lincecum and Cain would make the Blue Jays trade him.
-
Re: What, if anything, would it take to move someone like Derek Jeter?
I highly doubt the Giants would agree to trade either of them, or that Halladay would agree to go to San Francisco. Two players (probably) on the upside of their career for one that is likely on the decline?

it's warmer :p

Re: What, if anything, would it take to move someone like Derek Jeter?
Guys of this stature normally only get traded if they want a trade or if they're approaching free agency and it's obvious they won't resign with their current team. Jeter certainly doesn't want a trade, and the Yankees can obviously resign him, so he's not going anywhere.

Why is this a question? Unlike many teams, Jeter is a team Captain with a long term deal and a no trade. The yankees will probably pay him beyond his life cycle till retirement since they have not had a pure NYY since since the 50s-60s. He is having a good year so far and looks good for longetivity. He would be the first NYY to hit 3000 hits solely for them since who? Trivia.
As for Rivera and Posada, that is a tuff one. Yanks have traded away their top minors for a while. I could see picking up a closer and catcher next year as stop gaps for the short term. I am hoping Hughes can finally strut his stuff.
