I wish they would've kept him in. Only 73 pitches through 7 and he was cruising. I've heard no reports of any illness/injury, so I'm completely baffled as to why they removed him.
I think it was the radio where I heard that they are going to being watching his pitch count quite carefully. Something about the game vs the hated Dodgers where Martin helped take him out of the game with a really long at bat in the second (i think?). Bochy said something to the effect that that one at bat looked to have significantly wore him down.
I think they are just trying not to work him too hard in his old age. Unfortunately I was only able to watch up until he gave up that one hit (almost a no no), so I don't know how he looked in the later innings.
There were no later innings. He was taken out after that inning.
He threw more pitches the first two games, when he was removed due to ineffectiveness....and in this game, he was just smooth sailing and yet they took him out earlier (in pitch count terms) than they did in the first two games
Then they're being less "overly cautious" than they were in the first two games of the season, when he threw more pitches.
13 times last year, at 44, he threw 100 or more pitches. A total of 23 times, 90+ pitches. Taking him out of a game in which he's absolutely dominating and has been incredibly efficient isn't being overly cautious. To me, it's being stupidly cautious.
you'll get no arguement from me, I am a believer in letting a hot pitcher continue to pitch until he shows some fatigue *shrug* however the giants manager feels otherwise, possibly because of his first two starts, could be he is afraid that now that Randy has found his form he doesn't want to risk injury
as a Giants fan I am getting tired of Bochy.
