Alcides Escobar breaks DiMaggios record!!
Never seen anyone get even close, and then this pops in the Transactions box... It was simmed, and CPU controlled. I checked every box score just to see it wasnt a bug, and it wasnt. He's batting .380 for the year, and has a lot of 1 hit games....

Additionally, he's on pace to break Ichiros single season hit record, even though he isnt likely to keep the pace up....

Re: Alcides Escobar breaks DiMaggios record!!
wow, haven't seen that yet in any of my sims, cool

can you do a screen shot of his player card and his numbers for that year and career? that is really awesome thoguh
-
Re: Alcides Escobar breaks DiMaggios record!!
Best i've ever seen was a 44 game hitting streak by Hank Greenburg. 59 is crazy.
-
Re: Alcides Escobar breaks DiMaggios record!!
Thats the only record I've never seen broken in one of my games
-
Re: Alcides Escobar breaks DiMaggios record!!

This one is from August 1st the same year:
http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/5349/escobar2r.jpg
funny how he only has 18 walks and he has been caught stealing on almost half his attempts......Doesnt bring much other offense than his hits, most of them singles. And people complain that Ichiro doesnt knock in runs......

Yeah, I was just going to say. I don't know if he would really be a everyday player. Great hitter off the bench maybe.

He still gets on base a fair amount. He's atleast a good #9 hitter if nothing else.

True. Probably one of the best number 9 hitters of all time.

I would take a good list over him. No eye, zero power, frustrating runner....

yes but you also can't bench a guy hitter that well at this point

He's still getting on base over 40% of the time though.

Never thought i'd see the day...

His average won't stay that high. It will likely drop to around .310, at which point his OBP will be in the .330-.350 range, with zero power and a sucky steal rate.

Re: Alcides Escobar breaks DiMaggios record!!
As an update, he fell just 11 short of Ichiros hit record, notching 251 hits, the sixth most in MLB history.
-
Re: Alcides Escobar breaks DiMaggios record!!
Perhaps this guy is strong defensively, which would compensate for his one-dimensional offense.

obviously this guy was edited :)
but he didn't break the streak, just escobar, he had a 30 game, and a 29 game hitting streak though

Maybe if you have a team full of 90+ players with All-Stars on the bench or in the minor leagues. I've played with some (expansion) teams where he would be my highest rated player, by far.

Well he wouldn't give you the opportunity to score much. You'd be better off with a .250 hitter who could hit 10 home runs and walk 60 times. And not get caught stealing half the time.

You'd actually be best off with Escobar and simply NOT have him steal. ;)

Well, I wouldn't use him as a leadoff hitter, but any hitter with a 98 contact rating would have a place on my team. The predicted statistics of somebody with a 98 contact rating would have a very high batting average, very low strikeouts (also a combination of the eye rating), or a combination of both. He would be an excellent hitter to do a hit and run play with. And it's not as if high contact is his only asset. I'm just saying in terms of overall ratings, what is "low" to one person is "high" to another. ;)

Exactly... just turn down the stolen base tendencies under Strategies.

True. True. Just looking at his stats though, I'd be hard pressed to have in a starting lineup, and if I did. I would always be trying to draft or sign a free agent replacement. But wouldnt, not want him on my team. And I always like my teams to run. lol. He just seems to not score many runs, so those hits would be a bit empty. Kind of like a Rob Deer home run. Of course his team could not have any real good run producers, so that would leave him hard pressed to score.

Which would lead to a suggestion. The ability to micro manage players. lol.
-
Re: Alcides Escobar breaks DiMaggios record!!
Apart from his own baserunning transgressions, the lack of runs may very well be due to a lack of good hitters behind him.

Understood. I've just had expansion draft lineups where the highest rated player might be an 83 with the rest of them in the mid- to high-70's, and that's for a few seasons until I'm able to develop other players. (I have quite a few free agent restrictions placed on myself and use Mizerak's app to determine their interest as well, so it's not like I can just go out and sign a replacement.) I think depending on the rest of my team's makeup, I'd have the stolen base tendencies slider turned way down under Strategies and I'd have him steal only when I played in PBP mode. The AI seems to attempt stolen bases at odd intervals.

Re: Alcides Escobar breaks DiMaggios record!!
Fascinating read.
The guy hitted 251 hit in a season at age 24 and you wouldn`t have him in your lineup.
We clearly have different strategies. He would be hitting 2nd in my lineup anytime.

There will never be a .400 hitter who strikes out a ton. It just doesn't work that way.:p

He would?
So you'd be a weak hitting, caught stealing maniac, non walking, singles hitter in your number 2 slot?
I'd definitely put up any of my teams that I build with the strategies I use against a team that would do that.
That is fascinating.
I guess even Rob Deer had a job for a long time.
-
Re: Alcides Escobar breaks DiMaggios record!!
If he's hitting .376, I'd put him #2 too.
I'd just keep him station-to-station and not let him steal unless the situation was favorable.
-
Re: Alcides Escobar breaks DiMaggios record!!
I'm actually curious to see what his final year end stats were.
-
Re: Alcides Escobar breaks DiMaggios record!!
Escobar would be a #2, #8, or #9 hitter for me told not to steal unless in absolute favorable situations. Granted, he doesn't walk, but when he hits a single 37% of the time and gets on base 40% of the time, walks don't matter as much.
-
Re: Alcides Escobar breaks DiMaggios record!!
An outstanding contact hitter like that? Absolutely I'd bat him second. It's a .402 OBP no matter how you slice it, and given his lack of power, I'd want my #3 and #4 hitting behind him. If I had no one else who could steal bases, I'd bat him leadoff.
-
Re: Alcides Escobar breaks DiMaggios record!!
I think I'd also be slightly more conservative with Escobar on the basepaths. He definitely has speed, but maybe the AI is running him in the wrong situations.
-
Re: Alcides Escobar breaks DiMaggios record!!
Also a reminder, a high speed rating does not necessarily equate to stolen bases (or success at stealing bases when the player is controlled by your team). A player can have a large number of triples and that increases it as well.
