Calgary and Chicago heading into OT, hopefully this lasts a while.

Wow, that lasted a whole 12 seconds.

I and everyone I've ever known agree, hockey was only ever good in video games.
EA's NHL 94 - best sports video game of all time, ever.

Wrong...and wrong (NHL 2009, the console version anyway, is the best sports video game of all time).

Re: 2009 Stanley Cup Playoffs Thread
NHL 09 is amazing.
And Joe, hockey is a great sport. To play and to watch. Much like baseball, it's much better if you know what's going on.
Blackhawks with a crazy win tonight in OT and Anaheim with a big 2-0 win over San Jose.

Re: 2009 Stanley Cup Playoffs Thread
Man, if I'd known the Ducks were going to roll with Hiller, I might have picked them for an upset. I assumed they'd throw Giguere in there!

Things are looking bleak for the Caps now.

Lundqvist and the Rangers D locked them down today.

Re: 2009 Stanley Cup Playoffs Thread
Rangers always get lucky with getting the easy division team from the Southeast.

They are still a below average team, which they still are. But they got lucky with getting an easy division winner.

Re: 2009 Stanley Cup Playoffs Thread
I still think the Capitals have this series. Ovechkin got some great shots on Lund that just hit post in game two.
If they start going in the Rangers are toast.
It looks like the Canucks are about to put the Blues on the edge of elimination

Rangers get trounced 4-0. Bruins put Montreal on the brink with a 4-2 win and heading into the second Hawks and Flames are tied at 1.

jokinen w/ a goal with .2 seconds left to play ties up the series between the canes & devils

Re: 2009 Stanley Cup Playoffs Thread
Rangers are out of the playoffs. Everything is now right with the sports world.
-
Re: 2009 Stanley Cup Playoffs Thread
Getting back to the Rangers and whether they can score in the series debate, they only scored over 2 goals in a game in two of the seven games.
They scored 11 goals in the series. Divide that by 7, and that's an average of one and a half goals per game. As usual, teams don't magically do better than their season sample size in most playoff series'. It is amazing how people still think this offense is good.

Re: 2009 Stanley Cup Playoffs Thread
jokinen continues to be crucial for the canes

So Carolina pulled this off, huh? I wish Versus would have been able to show the 3rd period.

Huge fluke series win for the Hurricanes. There's no stat that shows that the Hurricanes are better than the Devils.

Off the top of my head, I would say a 4-3 series win is a pivotal stat in their favor :p

That is a fluke series win. The Devils were, and still are the better team despite who is advancing.

That is true. Winning playoff series' are the only thing that matters in the end, but that doesn't dismiss the fact that the Devils are better.

Well obviously.
The Sharks were better then the Ducks but in the six games that mattered they weren't.
The playoffs don't always determine the best team in the league, in fact its a rare occasion that it does determine that. It determines the best team in a short sample size series.

I'm not much of a hockey fan, but those two teams looked pretty evenly matched to me. The only blowout game in the series was one that... wait for it... the Hurricanes won. Doesn't matter anyway, New Jersey goes home to ... New Jersey. Ugh.

Re: 2009 Stanley Cup Playoffs Thread
Just glanced at the season series between the Devils & Canes, since I'm only a casual hockey fan, & the Canes won the season series 3-1, so I think it's safe to assume that the Canes are in fact better than the Devils

Not by much. The Ducks had the better defense considering they have a top 5 guy in Chris Pronger, and Hiller is very talented, close to Nabokov in my opinion. And they have the better experience. They also have the better coach.
The Devils should have outclassed the Hurricanes. The Hurricanes don't edge the Devils out in any area in my opinion.

Untrue. The Wings were the best team last year PROVEN when they WON the president's trophy. When the Lightning won the championship, they were the second best team points wise.

Short sample size.
Both teams are tied in goals, but the Devils play in a trap system, and in the much harder division.
New Jersey allowed less goals despite having Brodeur out about 40% of the season
New Jersey has a top 3 goalie in the history of the NHL
New Jersey has the better experience in my opinion

I hear ya, the better team typically loses it's regular season & postseason series against the lesser team :p
Not sure experience is really in the Devils' favor. Canes won the Cup 2 years ago & were in the Finals again about 5 years ago.
I'm done, just being an ass on here cause I'm bored
