Re: Tigers release Sheffield?
Good for the Tigers. I like when teams recognize a sunk cost instead of continuing to hurt themselves by playing the guy just because he's making a lot of money.

Re: Tigers release Sheffield?
Marlins 400K for a LF who is making a run at 500 HR.... anyone else see that happening?

The Tigers acquired speedy outfielder Josh Anderson from the Braves on Monday, which would have put a dent in Sheffield's playing time this season. Anderson gives the Tigers flexibility and allows Carlos Guillen, who was shifted to outfield this season, to spend more time as DH.
from mlb.com. how the hell did I miss this

Re: Tigers release Sheffield?
I am thinking, definitely an AL team that signs him on as DH. Marlins are an outside shot.
MLB Trade Rumors is thinking the Rays.
-
Re: Tigers release Sheffield?
I was just going to say the Rays... who is their DH?

Re: Tigers release Sheffield?
hmmm... sheff could be outa luck there then. hmmmm
Texas maybe? Toronto have a DH?

Re: Tigers release Sheffield?
Why would Atlanta give up Anderson?? :(
-
Re: Tigers release Sheffield?
we have Schafer who they would rather for power I believe... Bobby was never a big speed manager. Plus gonzales and sorriano are I believe fa's this year. Blanco will probably be the CF for now... Or the braves may be interested in a CF trade?

Josh Anderson...he's a generic speedy outfielder that can't really hit..
-
Re: Tigers release Sheffield?
I'd love to see him back in Atlanta as the RH side of our LF platoon.

How does that stop him from platooning with Anderson in LF? Anderson is LH
-
Re: Tigers release Sheffield?
Sheffield is terrible defensively at this point.

what do you do with Diaz?
and like houston said... he is a bog defensive problem

Re: Tigers release Sheffield?
This move makes no sense to me. Why don't you at least wait a few weeks into the season to see if you're going to get anything out of him before you just cut him loose like that. I still think he's a guy that can approach .800 OPS if things go right for him, especially since he's been healthy all spring.
Furthermore, if they were just going to replace him with Thames at DH, fine, but I don't think they will. I think they will move Guillen to DH, and play Anderson in LF. Anderson is, as HGM put it, a generic speedy no-hit outfielder. I don't even think he's any better than Clete Thomas, who the Tigers already had on the roster. I think Dombrowski just got it into his head for some reason that they needed TEAM SPEED, OPS be damned. So now, the Tigers have the new Scott Podsednik. Woo freakin' hoo.

Well, to be fair, most ballplayers have defensive problems when playing in swamps.:p
Sorry TNP, just couldn't help myself with that one. :D

I agree with this....and somehow think its not as simple as Sheffield just not being as good as he once was. They are still on the hook for the coin. More likely, it had something to do with Sheffs waning skillset AND an attitude conflict. Sheff hasn't exactly been one to sit quietly and just play ball when things aren't going his way.
Nothing to confirm that...but it makes more sense than a simple release due to him not being worth the contract they owe him anyhow.

That's definitely part of it. He's too much of a loudmouth/annoying/etc. to keep around if he's not playing full-time and doing well.

They were going to have to get rid of Sheffield, Thames, or Larish off the 25 man roster once they brought Anderson on board. I don't think the 40 man would've been a problem though.

Re: Tigers release Sheffield?
I see 3 things that made this easy for Detroit.
A: Batting .179 this spring
B: Oft injured and sucked last year.
C: I think I heard this somewhere, but him and Leyland didnt get along last year.

He will probably sign with the Phillies and replace Pat the Bat. They released Jenkins today to try to sign him.

A: certainly true, but I don't really put much stock into ST numbers. I don't think he should've been cut without some major league ABs first.
B: Yes he was but everything indicated that he was healthy this year. Again, seems like he's worth trying out at the beginning of the year, see what he's got left.
C: They actually had a pretty good relationship, relatively speaking. I mean, Sheff doesn't really see eye-to-eye with anyone, but his relationships on the Tigers seemed to be pretty good compared to with the Yankees or the Dodgers or the Padres or the Brewers...

I'm pretty sure Raul Ibanez replaced Pat Burrell....Here's why signing Sheffield is a pretty silly idea for the Phillies.

Um, no. They signed Raul Ibanez to a 3 year/$30 million...AND he's much better than Sheffield.
