Top 10 Athletes Succeeding after 40

Just like any list there are obviously guys who I would have put on the list that weren't there, but overall it's still a good list.

Re: Top 10 Athletes Succeeding after 40
Good list. If they did not have Gordie Howe they would only choose know team.

Re: Top 10 Athletes Succeeding after 40
Randy Johnson and Roger Clemens > Jamie Moyer

Yeah, I would have taken one of them over Moyer, too. Aside from that...I can't really find fault with it.

Re: Top 10 Athletes Succeeding after 40
The mention Petty but no Earnhardt Sr....

Well, here's the question then...who would you remove for Earnhardt?

Moyer maybe. Sr. raced until he died at age 53.

Re: Top 10 Athletes Succeeding after 40
Martina Navratilova? I didn't see anything about men only and since Nicklaus, Foreman and Petty are in there individual sports are included as well and that makes her exclusion a massive oversight IMHO. Whatever you think of her to leave her off a top 10 athletes past 40 list along with Clemens and Johnson sort of makes it a bit of a farce.

It is on AskMen.com. And who is she, I have never heard of her.

This is a magazine that has http://images.askmen.com/photos/megan-fox/84158.jpg
next to the TOP 10.
So i'm going to say, maybe they don't have a great deal of sports knowledge from a historical aspect.

Probably the greatest women's tennis player ever. I had forgotten about her, but agree totally...she should be there.
I'd probably pull Moyer for Clemens, and find some way to pull someone out for her. Earnhardt/Petty is a really, really tough call, but there's no way to really put BOTH of them in there.

I actually think Dale had a better post 40 racing career then Petty.

Billie Jean King called her: "The greatest singles, doubles and mixed doubles player who ever lived." (tennis) Tennis historian Bud Collins called her: "Arguably the greatest player who ever lived." She played a sport that most people are retiring from when players in other sports are just hitting their stride and she played that sport for 32 years retiring at age 50.

Those were 2 guys who crossed my mind as not being on the list who should've been, although you have to admire a guy who never had overpowering stuff and is still effective. I would've also given an honorable mention to Satchel Paige.

No, he wasn't. I have no idea where actionjackson got that from.
Paige was, however, and All-Star at 45 and 46.

Re: Top 10 Athletes Succeeding after 40
Dave Winfield was amazing as well.

Re: Top 10 Athletes Succeeding after 40
D'oh boy. I have no idea where I got that from. Sorry about that. :o
Memo to self: Self, next time check your facts before you post definitive statements.
Yours sincerely,
Action
Yes, Paige was an all-star at age 45 and 46 and tossed 3 innings of shutout ball in a start for the KC A's back in 1965 at age 58. Did Charlie Finley own the team then?
@michaelg, Winfield was absolutely ageless at age 40, but rapidly declined after that magical 1992 season. I wouldn't put him in the top 10, but as a Blue Jay fan I will never forget his age 40 season. :)

Yes. As I understand it, bringing Paige back was mostly a publicity stunt, but Finley had also found out that Paige only needed a few more days on a big league roster to qualify for a ML pension.

Re: Top 10 Athletes Succeeding after 40
Heres a list I found of top fantasy seasons by hitters over the age of 40. Its an ok list imo, but I could of swore that there were better seasons put up by batters over 40.

She would certainly deserve to be in the conversation too.
