Brew City Miracle? Milwaukee Brewers 1994 and Beyond.
Milwaukee Brewers (The Rebuilding Begins)
In 1994 the last remnants of World Series of 1982 had left. Robin Yount had retired, Paul Molitor was playing on another team. After a strong year in 1992 that had them just miss the playoffs they fell off the planet. The Brewers finished 69-93 6th in the NL East. It took them 13 years to avoid another losing season after that. It took 26 years to get back to the playoffs. This diary is an attempt to avoid that fate. To fight the good fight against large market teams and to keep baseball alive and strong in brew city. This is the diary of the 1994 Brewers and beyond.

THE RULES OF THE DIARY
~1.~ BUDGET RESTRAINT: This is rule numeral uno. The Brewers being a small market team will keep within the limits set by the “owner” in the game. If that Budget grows to a level above the midpoint of MLB, the Brewers will not go above that. This means that the Brewers payroll will be in the bottom half of the MLB no matter what.
~2.~ FREE AGENTS: While there is no steadfast rule on FA. I will follow most small market team strategies. I can only sign role players, bull pen support, and no more than 1 expected solid starter in a given year. This includes in season and off season.
~3.~ TRADES: Once again there is no set specific rule, just a general guideline. There will not be an obscene amount of trades during the year. A max of 3 trades can happen during the season including off season. Trades must be either done on the trading block or be brought to the Brewers from another team.
~4.~ RE-SIGNINGS: This is another place where I hope to keep reality in my mind. Small market teams do not generally resign veteran free agents that cost over a certain amount of money. I will follow this rule with Rule #1 in mind. If I can resign a player for cheap and it seems realistic I shall do it. I will not however resign the players that made a big name and a future big contract for themselves.
~5.~ ROOKIES: To keep this diary realistic as that is my number 1 goal, I will not put any player on my mlb roster who is younger than 21 years old unless they have 3 years of minor league experience.
~6.~ COMMISH MODE: I will only used commish mode to try and keep a competitive balance between the teams and the leagues. This may include making trades, releasing people, or creating a sort of rule 5 draft.
GOALS OF THE DIARY:
To entertain myself and others.
To stay with in a realistic budget and environment.
To reach the playoffs before the Brewers did in 2008.
Re: Brew City Miracle? Milwaukee Brewers 1994 and Beyond.
April 2nd, 1994: A great comeback starts the season right.
The Brewers trailed the White Sox 7 to 1 after five innings and yet rallied for seven runs in the 7th and 8th innings to end up winning 9 to 7. Brewers were lifted by the end of the order including Tom Brunansky’s HR and 3 RBI’s as well as Jose Valentin going 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored. Jamie Navarro got shelled for 6ER in 4 1/3innings. Angel Miranda got the win and Jesse Orosco got the save.

April 3rd 1994: You can hit but you can’t Run.
The Brewers were able to get eight hits today yet only managed to score 1 lone run, in a 3 to 1 loss against the White Sox. Tom Brunansky had another solid outing going 2 for 4. Kevin Seitzer got the loan run off a Greg Vaughn double in the first inning. Cal Eldred struggled early giving up 3 runs in the first two innings but went four more innings not allowing any more across the plate.
Chicago3 Milwaukee1
April 4th 1994: The Comeback Kids?
The Brewers jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the 4th only to find themselves down 9 to 5 going into the 8th inning. 2 runs in the eight and 4 runs in the ninth lead to a 11-10 victory for the Brewers and a series win against the White Sox on the road to start the year 2-1. Bill Wegman started off strong but couldn’t get out of the sixth inning going 5 innings and giving up 7ER. OF Tom Brunansky was the series hero going 3for 5 with 3RBI’s again today. Kevin Seitzer also went 3 for 5 with 3 RBI’s. Jesse Orosco got his 2nd save.
Milwaukee11 Chicago10
April 5th 1994: Higuera K’s Nine.
Teddy Higuera showed why he was once the ace of the Brewers pitching staff as he turned back the clock tonight. Higuera struck out 9 in 7 1/3 inning allowing only one run. Tom Brunansky’s bat continued to be on fire as he went 2 for 4 with a home run. Darryl Hamilton also had two hits and a run scored to lead the Brewers 3-1 past the Angels today. Jesse Orosco got the save again.
Milwaukee3 California1
April 6th 1994: A stroll in the park.
The Brewers brought together great pitching and great hitting to roll to a 10 to 1 victory today over the California Angels. For the second day in the roll the starting pitching was strong as Rickey Bones went 7 1/3 giving up only a run and scattering 8 hits. The bottom of the order was hot again Jose Valentin went 3 for 4 with 3runs and a HR. Bill Spires went 3 for 3, while BJ Surhoff had 4 RBI’s.
Milwaukee10 California1
April 7th 1994: Offensive firepower leads the way again.
For the fourth time in six games the Brewers offense scored 9 runs or more. For the fifth time this year they won. The Brewers overcame bad pitching once again from Jamie Navarro to win 11-7 at County stadium. Jamie once again got rocked for 6ER in only five innings, not what one wants from an ace. On the bright side Darryl Hamilton scored 3 runs and Kevin Seitzer, Greg Vaughn, Dave Nielsen, and John Jaha all got 2 RBI’s as the Brewers collected 13 hits on the night.
Milwaukee 11 California 7
April 8th 1994: Six run blow up prevents series sweep of the Angels.
After six great innings and 8 strike outs Cal Eldred fell apart in the seventh not getting a single out and allowing 5runs 4earned before getting yanked. It didn’t get better as Angel Miranda threw 2 wild pitches and allowed a few more earned runs. The offense tried included a great game from Darryl Hamilton who went four for five with a run, rbi, and a stolen base. Greg Vaughn and Dave Nilsson both hit home runs.

CURRENT RECORD 5-2
Re: Brew City Miracle? Milwaukee Brewers 1994 and Beyond.
April 9th 1994: Costly Homers lack of hitting cost Brewers at home.
Two solo shots from Brian Giles and Manny Ramirez were enough to put the Brewers behind and eventually out of this one as the Brewers lost to the Indians 4 to 2. Bill Wegman pitched well except for the two errant pitches going six and only allowing the 2ER. CF Darryl Hamilton went 3 for 5 with a run scored, while Jose Valentin provided a HR shot his 2nd of the year.
Cleveland 4 Milwaukee2
April 10th 1994: Pitching debacle as Brewers give up 15 runs and 5 home runs.
The Brewers bats came alive today except the pitching gave up so many runs that is was over by the sixth inning. Carlos Baerga and Albert Belle each had two home runs today against the Brewers. Mike Ignasiak did a spot start going three innings and giving up only three runs. Angel Miranda got shelled in his third straight appearance giving up six runs in the sixth inning. On the positive side 3B BJ Surhoff went 3 for 5 with an RBI, Darryl Hamilton got two stolen bases and Jeff Cirillo got a pinch hit home run and 4 RBI’s.

BREAKING NEWS: BILL WEGMAN OUT FOR SEASON!!!!!!
In a terrible break, Bill Wegman’s soreness after his last start was a lot worse than expected as he found out today that he broke his wrist and that it will need surgery. Bill will be out for six months. It will be interesting to see who get’s his spot in the rotation. Some thought it would be Angel Miranda, but he has looked less than average so far this year.
April 11th 1994: Brewers lose heartbreaker in 10 innings.
Home runs help. Usually when a team hits four home runs in a game they win. Unfortunately they were all solo shots. Greg Vaughn, BJ Surhoff, Dave Nilsson, and Jose Valentin all went yard in a 5 to 4 10 inning loss. Rickey Bones gave up four runs in the second but proceeded to put out 12 straight batters making it through six innings. Teddy Higuera came in off missing his last start due to injury going three scoreless innings before allowing a Kenny lofton double that eventually turned into a sac fly from Manny Ramirez in the 10th. Despite two close games with an preseason favorite the Brewers were swept at home.
Cleveland 5 Milwaukee4 (10innings)
April 13th 1994: Brewers pitching kill their chances again!
For the first time this year ace Jamie Navarro had a game. He went 7 innings only giving up 3ER and striking out a handful. Unfortunately a 5-3 lead in the 8th wasn’t enough as Graeme Lloyd gave up one run. Jesse Orosco who had been 3 for 3 on saves suffered from having a few days off as he got slapped around for four hits and 2ER to blow the save and the game. Dave Nilsson had a perfect game from the plate going 3 for 3 with 2HR, 2R, 3RBI, and a BB.
Kansas City 5 Milwaukee4
April 14th 1994: 9th inning Heroics end five game losing streak.
It looked like the loss streak would hit six but pinch hitters and Darryl Hamilton would not allow that to happen. Trailing three to two in the ninth the Brewers loaded the bases with one out. A sac fly RBI from Jody Reed and a two out game winning single from Darryl Hamilton provided joy for all in attendance today. Cal Eldred went 5 and a 1/3 innings before getting into a jam. The Bullpen did not allow a run after that. Catcher Dave Nilsson had another great game going 3 for 4 with 2runs.
Milwaukee4 Kansas City3
April 15th 1994: Brewers fight hard and are rewarded.
The Brewers were in a battle. Both teams were giving it their all making great defensive and offensive plays through out the day. The pitching was solid and in the end it was two special performances that gave Milwaukee the win and the series win. Darryl Hamilton went 2 for 3 with a BB and 2R, while LF Greg Vaughn went 3 for 3 with 3 RBI’s. Teddy Higuera gave six solid innings to pick up the win, and Jesse Orosco got through the ninth easily to get his fourth save.
Milwaukee6 Kansas City3
BREAKING NEWS: JOHN JAHA ON THE HOT SEAT?
John Jaha has had a very slow start to the year. Jaha who has played every game so far at 1B and batting in the five spot has been off to a terrible start. In 42AB Jaha has only had four hits and is batting only .095. The Brewers manager has stated that in the next series him and Jose Valentin will switch spots in the line up. It makes us think that if he continues to perform poorly we may see BJ Surhoff move to 1B and young Jeff Cirillo get a chance at 3B.
CURRENT RECORD 7-6
Re: Brew City Miracle? Milwaukee Brewers 1994 and Beyond.
April 17th 1994: Pitching staff just plain embarrassed.
Ricky Bones 4 innings 5ER. Mike Ignasiak 2 innings 4ER. Mike Fetters 1 inning 3ER. Graeme Lloyd 1 inning 1ER. Final score Indians 13runs 19hits. Brewers 2 runs and 7 hits. Yeah it was that bad. Darryl Hamilton and DH Kevin Seitzer went 2 for 4 with a run each as the only bright spot for the Brewers. If the Brewers are going to compete they need to get some pitching.

BREAKING NEWS: GRAEME LLOYD OUT FOR 10 DAYS
RP Graeme Lloyd was injured in yesterdays game. Lloyd pulled a rib muscle and will be out for about a week in a half. In his place Bob Scanlan will serve as the set up man.
April 18th 1994: Brewers blast 5 Home Runs as Milwaukee overpowers Indians.
Milwaukee scored 15 runs in their first four games against Cleveland, today they added 11 more to that total in an 11 to 6 win over the Indians. BJ Surhoff, Greg Vaughn, Jose Valentin, Tom Brunansky and even struggling John Jaha went over the fence in this one. Surhoff had a special game collecting three hits, three runs, and three RBI’s. Jamey Wright started strong through four but was blown up in the fifth only collecting one out and giving up four ER. The Bullpen held strong though to move the Brewers back above .500 on the year.
Milwaukee 11 Cleveland 6
BREAKING NEWS: DARRYL HAMILTON SIGNS EXTENSION AN EARLY SEASON TRADE AND MORE!
The Brewers got to work on improving their team for this year and the future today as they resigned lead off center fielder Darryl Hamilton to a 4 year 11.6million dollar contract (2.9million/yr). Hamilton is currently leading the league in batting average and stolen bases. He is also near the league lead in runs. On the heels of that to make room for the increased budget the Brewers shipped Veteran catcher Brian Harper and minor leaguers OF Alex Diaz and P Joe Slusarski to the Texas Rangers for SP Rick Reed. It appears Reed might get a chance to take Bill Wegman’s spot in the starting rotation. In addition C Mike Matheny and OF Troy O’Leary werecalled up to the roster while OF Turner Ward was sent back to the minors.
April 19th 1994: Solid pitching leads way for Brewers
Cal Eldred only allowed 2 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings and the Brewers supplied enough offense to win the game 5-2 to take the series in Cleveland. Darryl Hamilton continued his april tear going 3 for 3 with 2 runs and an RBI. BJ Surhoff hit his fourth homer of the year. Jesse Orosco pitched another perfect ninth for his fifth save.
Milwaukee 5 Cleveland 2
April 20th 1994: Home Runs Home Runs everywhere Home Runs.
For the second time this year, the Brewers hit five home runs in an 11 to 2 rout of rivals Minnesota Twins. BJ Surhoff was perfect going 5 for 5 with 2HR 2R and 6 RBI’s. Dave Nilsson was also stellar going 3 for 4 with 2HR 2R and 2RBI’s. RF Tom Brunansky also went 2 for 4 with a HR. Teddy Higuera pitched six strong innings only allowing 2ER and picking up win #3 in april. The Bullpen was solid allowing no runs in three innings.
Milwaukee 11 Minnesota 2
April 21st 1994: Ricky Bones throws CG Shutout in a pitchers duel.
For six innings their was more offense in the stands and in the parking lots than in the game as Minnesota’s Eric Milton and Ricky Bones both threw scoreless thru six innings. In the seventh the struggling 1B John Jaha became the hero as he blasted a two run home run which was all the offense Ricky Bones needed. Greg Vaughn added a 2RBI double in the 8th as the Brewers won 4-0.
Milwaukee 4 Minnesota 0
BREAKING NEWS: JOSE VALENTIN OUT FOR A WEEK.
Starting Brewer shortstop Jose Valentin will be out for seven days due to inflimation in his right shoulder. The Brewers will have 1992 NL ROY Pat Listach take his place in the interim.
April 22nd 1994: Rick Reed gives up Grand Slam and 9 runs in terrible first outing.
Newly acquired Rick Reed looked like a good deal when he went the first three innings without giving up a run. After a few doubles and a couple runs he soon loaded the bases and gave up a Grand Slam to 3B Scott Stahoviak. A couple hits later he was pulled. In bright spots Angel Miranda went 5 2/3 innings only allowing two runs. Darryl Hamilton Pat Listach and John Jaha went 2 for 4 and Dave Nielson

April 23rd 1994: Bats fall silent in California
The Brewers were only able to get three hits and a run off of veteran Chuck Finley in a 4 to 1 loss against California today. Jamie Navarro settled down after the third but the damage was already done. Navarro went seven innings giving up 4ER. Navarro’s ERA for the year is still around 8 which is unacceptable for an ‘ace’. Greg Vaughn got a triple. Darryl Hamilton got a couple hits, also the lone run, and BJ Surhoff got three walks but that was about it for the offense.
California 4 Milwaukee 1
April 24th 1994: Cal Eldred walks 7 gives up Grand Slam in rout of Brewers.
Cal Eldred continued the up and down steakiness of the Brewers this year as he gave up 7 walks and 6ER in four innings. For the second day the Brewers bats were mostly silent on this west coast trip as they only collected two runs on six hits. Dave Nilsson got two hits and Darryl Hamilton got another run to be among the league leaders in runs as well as avg.
California 9 Milwaukee 2
April 25th 1994: Brewers set Franchise Record and cruise way to victory.
The Brewers set a Franchise record today scoring 19 runs. In a month that has saw them hit five HR in a game twice, they were able to score 19 with only two homeruns. The game saw John Jaha get out of a slump going 4 for 6 with 2R and 2RBI. Bill Spires went 3 for 5 with 3R and 4RBI’s. Pat Listach added 3 runs. And as the month has gone so has Darryl Hamilton putting together one of the best months in Baseball history. Darryl went two for four with a HR 3R and 5RBI’s. Teddy Higuera got the win despite having his worst outing of the year, going 6 innings with 5ER.
Milwaukee 19 California 5
Aptil 27th 1994: Alex Fernandez SHUTOUTS Brewers in classic pitching duel.
Fresh off his CG shutout last start Ricky Bones went seven innings given up only 1 run and five hits. Unfortunately White Sox pitcher Fernandez only needed that one run to get the win, as he pitched a complete game shutout. The Brewers were able to hit Alex collecting 10 hits over the nine innings but left scorers in position five times including the seventh, eighth, and ninth inning. Greg Vaughn and Dave Nilsson each had two hits and Doug Henry gave two innings of perfect relief.

BREAKING NEWS: RP MIKE FETTERS OUT FOR TWO WEEKS.
Mike Fetters pulled a muscle while warming up in the bullpen in yesterdays game and will be out for almost two weeks. The injury bug has been hitting the Brewers early and often so far and they will be glad to be getting Graeme Lloyd back in a couple days.
April 28th 1994: 9th Inning rally keeps the Brewers above .500
After an average outing by Jamie Navarro 6 innings 4ER, the Brewers found themselves deadlocked with the White Sox. Bob Scanlan who had been pitching lights out lately gave up 2 runs in the eighth, and heading into the 9th the Brewers were down 6-4. The Brewers bats got hot as Darryl Hamilton, Jeff Cirillo and BJ Surhoff all got hits and a couple of sac fly RBI’s later the Brewers scored the third and game winning run of the game. Darryl Hamilton was amazing as always going 2 for 3 with 2BB, 2R, an RBI and a SB.
Milwaukee7 Chicago6
April 29th 1994: Eldred goes eight scoreless innings as Brewers win series
Cal Eldred gave up only five hits through eight innings. He might have had a shutout if he didn’t throw 150 pitches at that point. Instead Mike Ignaskiak came in and finished the shutout as the Brewers won 7-0. Greg Vaughn who is in a bit of a slump hit a HR, and Kevin Seitzer as well as Dave Nilsson both added two hits. Tom Brunansky also added a couple RBI’s as they strolled through the game.
Milwaukee7 Chicago0
April 30th 1994: Another comeback for the ages marks an end to a great first month for the Brewers.
The Brewers came to Texas with Rick Reed starting to face his former team. Rick Reed faired a little bit better but once again was slammed for a grand slam, the third one he has given up in two starts. Reed went 5 2/3 innings giving up 7ER. It wasn’t looking pretty as it was 7-3 Rangers heading into the 9th. That’s when the Brewers caught lightning in the bottle scoring 7 runs and batting around the order. Tom Brunansky was the hero of the game going 3 for 4 with 2R a BB and in the 9th he scored a three run home run and a 2rbi double. Jose Valentin returned to the lineup going 2 for 4. Jesse Orosco gave up a quick home run but settled down to pick up his sixth save.

Brewers (The Good, The Bad, and The Strange)
The Good
Their Record: The Brewers get off to a strong start going 15-11 and are currently in second place. This is well above where most expected them to be.
Best Lead Off Man in Baseball: Darryl Hamilton was easily the best lead off man in baseball. He is batting over .400 and is near the league lead in runs, on base average, and stolen bases.
The Australian Superstar: Young catcher Dave Nilsson has looked like an all star so far and shows no signs of slowing down.
Playing well beyond expectations: SS Jose Valentin, DH/3B Kevin Seitzer, and RF Tom Brunansky all are having great years so far.
Teddy Higuera: The guy has been a delight in the club house and on the mound so far.
The Bad
Power Hitters struggling: It was expected that Greg Vaughn and John Jaha would be supplying the pop in the bats this year. So far they have only provided 7 home runs, and are batting around .230. If they do not improve soon, changes might be made.
The Pitching: While the staff has had it’s positive moments the teams ERA is 5.3 not good. They have allowed 7 or more runs quite a few times. It’s hard to imagine the bats will stay hot enough to keep above .500 if this pitching staff doesn’t improve.
Rick Reed: After coming in as part of a trade to be the #3 or 4 starter after Bill Wegman’s injury he has given up 3 grand slams and has an ERA north of 15.
The Strange
Inconsistency: The Brewers have been the definition of inconsistent. They will go out and score 10 runs two days in a row and then get one run the third game. The pitching will give up 8 runs a few days in a row and then they get a shutout. They will need to be more consistent to stay this strong.
Injuries: The Brewers have had at least a half dozen injuries so far this year including losing pitcher Bill Wegman for the year. Hopefully this trend doesn’t continue.

Re: Brew City Miracle? Milwaukee Brewers 1994 and Beyond.
May 1st 1994: Not quite enough
Teddy Higuera was not quite himself and soon the Brewers found themselves down 4-0. The Brewers however worked their way back into the game making it 4-3 going into the eighth. Despite a couple base runners that’s as close as it would get as Rangers won 4-3. Higuera went 6 1/3 with 4ER. The offense for the Brewers was absent for most of the day but C Dave Nilsson did provide some life with a 2 run HR while Darryl Hamilton added a hit an a SB.
Texas 4 Milwaukee 3
May 2nd 1994: Ricky Bones gives up 5 in the first as Rangers roll over Brewers
Ricky Bones couldn’t make a third straight great start. The problems started right away as Bones gave up 5 in the first and 7ER total in 3 1/3 before Angel Miranda was set in. Kevin Seitzer scored the lone run for the Brewers on 2 hits. Jeff Cirillo also added 2 hits as well. For Texas Ivan Rodriguez, Dean Palmer, and Juan Gonzalez all went 3 for 5 with 2 runs a piece.
Texas 9 Milwaukee 1
May 3rd 1994: Offense hits on all gears, Brewers split series.
Jamie Navarro started off slow giving up two runs in the first but didn’t even allow a runner in scoring position for the rest of his outing as he went 7 strong. By the time Mike Ignasiak came on it was all over but the shouting. 2B Bill Spires had a huge day going 4 for 4 with 3R and 2SB. Darryl Hamilton went 4 for 6 with 2R and 4RBI. 3B BJ Surhoff and OF Tom Brunansky each hit their 7th Home run of the year and C Dave Nilsson hit his 9th as the Brewers scored 12 runs.
Milwaukee 12 Texas 4
May 4th 1994: Late inning heroics from struggling Jaha give Brewers a big win.
John Jaha has been struggling, and rumors were strong that he is about to go to the bench to allow Jeff Cirillo a chance as an everyday player. Those rumors were quieted at least for a night as 3 for 4 with a huge 2 run home run to lead the Brewers back into and eventually winning the game. Greg Vaughn, Darryl Hamilton, and Bill Spires all added two hits, and Tom Brunansky added his 2nd home run in as many nights. Cal Eldred got knocked around for 7R in 5 innings though only 4 runs were earned as a couple costly errors lead to easy runs. Jesse Orosco came in and got his 7th save in 8 chances.
Milwaukee 9 Cleveland 7
May 5th 1994: Brewers jump out early and cruise to win against Indians.
Milwaukee jumped out to a 5-0 lead after 2 innings taking advantage of unknown Paul Rigdon. Rick Reed went five shutout innings before giving up a 3 Run Home run to Eddie Murray in the sixth. Doug Henry and Mike Ignasiak prevented anymore runs from coming home for the rest of the night. Bill Spiers, Dave Nilsson, Greg Vaughn, and BJ Surhoff all had 2 hits on the night. Surhoff also had a Home Run. Troy O’Leary went 0-4 for the night but gave Darryl Hamilton a much needed night off.
Milwaukee 9 Cleveland 3
May 6th 1994: Eddie Murray continues to kill Brewers as Indians avoid sweep.
Eddie Murray was batting above .500 vs. the Brewers so far this season and improved on that today. His line 3 for 4 HR 4RBI and 2 runs scored as they cruised to a 10-2 victory. Teddy Higuera started off ok but got shelled in the 5th inning and couldn’t even get an out in the sixth as he gave up 6ER. On the positive side Tom Brunansky got a couple hits and a home run. Kevin Seitzer showed a good eye getting 3 walks.

May 8th 1994: Brewers survive scare and avoid an embarrassing collapse.
The Brewers were up 11-2 after four innings and cruising along until the pitching fell apart. Jamie Narvarro gave up 3 runs in the sixth inning and left with a comfortable 11-5 lead. The real problem was normally solid Bob Scanlan got hammered for 4 runs to make it 11-9 going into the 9th. Jesse Orosco then loaded the bases with two outs when Kirby Puckett blasted a shot towards Deep center where Darryl Hamilton saved the day making a leaping catch bringing back a grand slam and preserving the victory. Turner ward got 3 hits and 3R in his first start. Five other Brewers each got two hits including Jose Valentin who hit his 5th home run of the year.
Milwaukee 11 Minnesota 9
May 9th 1994: Brewers have 8 run 5th inning demolish Twins.
Everyone of the Brewers starting line up had at least 1 hit and 1 run a piece as the Brewers destroyed The twins 14-2. Dave Nilsson hit his 10th HR and Greg Vaughn blasted his 5th. Jose Valentin and Dave Nilsson each had 3 hits. Dave and Greg Vaughn each had three runs as well. Cal Eldred had his best start of the year going 8 innings and only allowing 2ER while striking out 6. It’s the 13th time in 34 Games that the Brewers have had 9 runs or more. They are easily on pace to have a franchise record in runs.
Milwaukee 14 Minnesota 2
May 10th 1994: Jose Valentin goes perfect from the plate as Brewers sweep Twins.
We knew Jose Valentin had potential to be a good player for the Brewers. I don’t think anyone would think he would be this good this early. SS Valentin went 4 for 4 with 4RBI 2R and a HR. Darryl Hamilton added 2 hits 3 runs and Stolen Base to continue a great start to a year. Ricky Bones gave up 4 runs in the 4th but didn’t allow anymore in his 7 innings while evening his record to 3-3. Jesse Orosco came on again in the 9th getting save #9 and helping Brewers sweep Minnesota at home.
Milwaukee 7 Minnesota 5
May 11th 1994: Dennis Martinez goes 8 strong as Brewers get rocked.
Dennis Martinez pitched a gem. He gave up only two hits a Greg Vaughn single and a John Jaha home run in 8 innings. The Brewers picked up a meaningless run off of Mesa in the 9th as they lost 8-2. Indians C Sandy Alomar killed the Brewers from the nine spot going 3 for 4 with a HR and 3RBI’s. Teddy Higuera continues to struggle giving up 6ER in 5 innings. Angel Miranda continues to plead his case for a spot in the rotation as he only gave up 1ER in 4 innings.
Cleveland 8 Milwaukee 2
May 12th 1994: Just enough to get the job done.
The Brewers did just enough to win the game. It started with the first solid outing of the year for Rick Reed who went 6 1/3 giving up just 2ER. Bill Spires, Greg Vaughn, and Darryl Hamilton each had two hits. Hamilton had 2 runs as well. Tom Brunansky tied for the team lead with his 10th HR. And BJ Surhoff added 3RBI’s including the game winning 2RBI Double in the bottom of the 8th. Jesse Orosco came in and got his 10th save of the year in 11 chances.
Milwaukee 6 Cleveland 4
May 13th 1994: John Jaha’s Grand Slam helps Brewers pull within 1 game of Indians for AL Central Lead.
John Jaha’s bat has started to get going as he went 2 for 4 with a HR and 4RBI’s. It seemed like it was not goning to be enough to get the win though. Luckily the Brewers Dave Nilsson pulled some 9th inning heroics as he broke a 6-6 tie with a game winning RBI single to help the Brewers take 2 of 3 from the Indians at home. Jamie Navarro once again started strong but fell apart in the 6th inning giving up 5 in the 6th. He left giving up 6ER and now has a 6.84ERA on the year. The trio of Bob Scanlan, Doug Henry, and Mike Fetters pitched 3 scoreless innings.

Re: Brew City Miracle? Milwaukee Brewers 1994 and Beyond.
May 15th 1994: Brewers offense stifled as Toronto wins.
The Brewers were unable to even get a runner on base until the fifth inning, yet they still had a chance to win or get back in it later in the game. Down 4-2 in the top of the seventh the Brewers had the bases loaded with one out and BJ Surhoff at bat, unfortunately he grounded into a double play. The team went 5 for 28. Cal Eldred had an OK outing going six innings giving up 4ER on 6 hits. John Olerud and Joe Carter were the difference makers for Toronto as they each went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s.
Toronto 6 Milwaukee 2
May 16th 1994: One Strange day yields terrible results for the Brewers.
It was a weird day to say the least. Toronto only scored in two innings in the game, yet scored 15RUNS!!! In the third after a hot start Ricky Bones gave up a home run and then a couple doubles before loading the bases and giving up a grand slam to Ed Sprague. He was yanked after 2 1/3 Innings and 7ER. Milwaukee battled back to an 8-5 deficit heading into the bottom of the seventh when they proceeded to give up two more home runs including Ed Sprague’s 2nd of the game. Toronto batted around the line up in two different innings the first time that has happened in Blue Jay history. And just to make it a little more weird Blue Jay pitcher Juan Guzman threw a record 6 WILD PITCHES?
Toronto 15 Milwaukee 5
May 17th 1994: Todd Stottlemyre shutouts Brewers finish sweep of Crew.
The Brewers got some hits seven of them but couldn’t score a run as Todd shutdown the crew. Jeff Cirillo continues to make his case to be an everyday player as he went 2-3 and is batting .417 in 48AB’s. Darryl Hamilton had a hit and a SB again today. Teddy Higuera had an OK outing going 7 innings and giving up 4 runs. Doug Henry gave up two more runs even though it didn’t matter. Milwaukee only scored 7 runs in the series.
Toronto 6 Milwaukee 0
May 18th 1994: Three run 9th inning sparks another comeback for the Brewers.
As common this year the starting pitcher of the Brewers struggled early. Supposed ace Jamie Navarro gave up 4 runs in the third and gave up 6ER in only 5 innings. However clutch bullpen pitching wouldn’t allow another run the rest of the game. 1B John Jaha once again showed signs of his bat coming alive as he went 3 for 4 with a HR 2runs and 2RBI’s. Greg Vaughn, Tom Brunansky, and Jose Valentin all had two hits as well including big hits in the 3 run 9th inning to take the lead. Jesse Orosco came in and picked the save once again.
Milwaukee 7 Cleveland 6
May 19th 1994: RP Bob Scanlan gets hammered and turns close game to a rout for Indians.
Cal Eldred went seven innings and only gave up 5 hits. Sure 3 of them were solo HR but as he left in the seventh the Brewers were in it 3-1. Then Bob Scanlan came in and proceeded to give up 5R in only 2/3 innings of action. Scanlan has fallen apart in the last month. In May his ERA is over 20. CF Darryl Hamilton and BJ Surhoff were the only bright spots on the day as they each had two hits and Darryl drove in BJ Surhoff in their lone run. The 2 thru 4 hitters went a combined 0 for 12 today.

BREAKING NEWS: RP BOB SCANLAN OUT FOR YEAR NEEDS TOMMY JOHN SURGERY.
Bob Scanlan had been struggling in May and finally after yesterdays game mentioned the pain he had been having in his arm. It turned out to be much more serious than he thought. Scanlan will be out for the year and may never again be the same. It’s unfortunate. This means Mike Ignasiak will be called back up from AAA. The Brewers may be in the market for some more pitching if they continue to play above .500 Ball.
May 20th 1994: Brewers give up 2 Grand Slams again as pitching staff continues slide.
Well once again the Brewers pitching staff just got demolished giving up 15 runs. Ricky Bones gave up 9ER in 4 innings. Mike Ignasiak gave up 6 ER in 2 2/3 innings. It was a travishamockery. The pitching staff needs to do something or all the offense in the world won’t help. For the second straight day Brewers could only manage 1 runs across the plate. Jeff Cirillo continues to bat almost .500 against lefties going 2 for 3 with the only run as well.

Re: Brew City Miracle? Milwaukee Brewers 1994 and Beyond.
BREAKING NEWS: RICKEY BONES OUT OF ROTATION, ANGEL MIRANDA IN
After three god awful outings in a row. The Brewers have stated that Angel Miranda will get a chance to pitch in the rotation. Rickey Bones will move to long inning, mop up duty but may get a chance again if Jamie Navarro has a few more cruddy outings like he has been having this whole year. Rumors are circling that Greg Vaughn, Jody Reed, Jamie Navarro, and Rickey Bones are all on the trading block and that the Brewers are looking for young solid pitchers to add to their staff. More on that if it develops.
May 21st 1994: Crew glad to be back at home.
Angel Miranda in his first start of the season showed potential going 5 innings against the White Sox and only giving up 2ER. The Bullpen prevented him from picking up the win as they let it get all tied up at 4. Fortunately the bats lit back up as The Brewers had three home runs including Tom Brunansky’s team leading 11th HR of the year. OF Brunansky went 3 for 4. Jose Valentin and BJ Surhoff both had two hits and Greg Vaughn and Bill Spiers each hit home runs in the victory. Jesse Orosco continued to be a solid closer picking up save #12.
Milwaukee 7 Chicago 5
May 22nd 1994: White Sox Jack McDowell shuts out Brewers wins 8th game of year.
For once the pitching was solid. Teddy Higuera went six innings giving up just 1 ER unfortunately what is becoming more of a regular occurrence the Brewers could not manage to turn 7 hits into a single run. Two costly errors allowed three unearned runs to score as The crew fell today. Darryl Hamilton continues to slump going 0 for 4. DH Kevin Seitzer, Dave Nilsson and Greg Vaughn were the only bright spots each adding two hits a piece. All seven Brewer hits were singles.

BREAKING NEWS: 2B BILL SPIERS BREAKS LEG LIKELY OUT FOR THE YEAR.
Bill Spiers broke his leg hitting the 1st base pad wrong running out a single in yesterdays loss. The Injuries continue to mount for the Brewers. This is their 3rd opening day roster player out for the year. He joins Bill Wegman and Bob Scanlan. This injury hurts the Brewers almost as much as Wegman’s as Bill was batting a solid .295. It looks like Jody Reed, and Pat Listach will get chances at 2nd, as well as Rookie Mark Loretta who is a little green and just made the jump to AAA this year was called up for the spot.
SIDE NOTE: THIS SUCKS
I don’t have the money to put a lot into my medical staff and I am paying for it. I could really use Wegman as my pitching staff is showing how weak it is. Pat Listach and Jody Reed are both hitting poorly so far so we shall see which one of them or if Mark Loretta can get hot and fill in.
May 23rd 1994: Rick Reed utterly disappointing as pitching cost Brewers series.
Rick Reed may have bought Ricky Bones a chance in the rotation again as he gave up 7 runs in 4 2/3 innings. The game was over before it got going. The Brewers bats got them a little closer eventually getting four runs but that wasn’t enough. Greg Vaughn went 3 for 5 with 2 runs. John Jaha and Tom Brunansky each hit a home run. Brunansky is surprising everyone as he has 12HR this year to lead the Brewers.
Chicago 8 Milwaukee 4
May 25th 1994: Cal Eldred, Dave Nilsson hero’s as Brewers find groove against Red Sox.
A day off is what the Brewers needed. They sent up their best pitcher so far this year and he delivered going 7 innings giving up only 2ER and providing stability in the starting spot for at least one day. C Dave Nilsson went 3 for 4 with 4RBI’s. Kevin Seitzer got three runs on two hits. Greg Vaughn drew 3 walks and CF Darryl Hamilton went 2 for 4 with a walk and 2 runs scored. Hopefully the offense continues to have games like this as their pitching will need it.
Milwaukee 10 Boston 2
May 26th 1994: Three Run 1st all Brewers need as pitching strong two days in a row.
For the first time this year Jamie Navarro looked like an ace going 7 innings and only giving up 1 run. The Brewers started off strong scoring three runs in the first off a three run jack by Dave Nilsson his 11th of the year. After that though the day was quiet as Boston’s Nate Minchey didn’t give up another hit till he left the game. The Brewers got a couple hits after he left. Darryl Hamilton was the only Brewer with 2 hits. Jesse Orosco got his 13th save in 4 chances and dropped his era to 1.80. Brewers look for the sweep tomorrow.
Milwaukee3 Boston2
May 27th 1994: Jesse Orosco blow’s second save of season as Red Sox avoid sweep in extra innings.
It looked like for the first time in a long time the Brewers pitching would put three straight outings together. It was all fine and dandy until Orosco entered the game in the 9th and gave up 2ER while only getting one out. Mike Fetters came in and pitched a few good outs until giving up a big 2 run HR to Mo Vaughn. Dave Nilsson hit a home run for the second day in a row to time for the team lead with 12. 3B BJ Surhoff was the only Brewer to get two hits. Roger Clemens pitched seven strong innings but Rookie Mark Loretta got his first career hit off of the perennial all star. Angel Miranda pitched six strong innings only giving up 1ER, his second straight solid start.

Re: Brew City Miracle? Milwaukee Brewers 1994 and Beyond.
May 28th 1994: White Sox P Jack McDowell does the impossible against the Brewers.
For the SECOND TIME IN ONE WEEK, Jack McDowell pitched a complete game shutout of the Brewers. What can you say that’s two straight starts against the Brewers and two straight shut outs. Jack McDowell is easily the early favorite for AL CY YOUNG as he is 9-0 on the year with an under 3 ERA. For the Brewers today their wasn’t much positive as they could only nab four hits. Teddy Higuera went 6 innings giving up 4 ER. And the bull pen was solid not giving up a single hit against the sox.
Chicago 4 Milwaukee 0
May 29th 1994: Ricky Bones spots White Sox 4 as Brewers can’t make the comeback.
Ricky Bones was back in the starting line up and once again had problems early giving up 4ER in the first two innings. In his defense he did go 6 1/3 innings in total only giving up 1 more ER. Wilson Alverez the sox pitcher was dominant until the sixth when the Brewers started to make a comeback led by Dave Nilsson’s 3 hits and Jose Valentin’s 2 hits. Sub outfielder Turner Ward came up with 2 runs today as well. The offense had it’s moments but couldn’t overcome the bad opening inning pitching. On the plus side Rick Reed pitched 1 2/3 innings scoreless in relief.

BREAKING NEWS: BREWERS GET YOUNG PITCHING IN TRADE
The Brewers upset that they can’t find any sort of reliable pitching in their line up went out and got some. The Brewers sent utility infielder Jody Reed and a Rookie league relief prospect go to the New York Mets for the young SP Bobby Jones. Bobby Jones won the #4 spot to start his first full season in NY but has been a headache in the clubhouse. ------(READ D- w/ METS IN CHEMISTRY MOVES TO C+ W/BREWERS). Jones has done fairly well getting 5 wins in 11 starts and posting an ERA around 4.3. With this trade the Brewers have the lowest payroll in baseball.
May 30th 1994: Cal Eldred blows up in sixth, gives away lead and lets Chicago sweep Brewers.
Cal Eldred had been one of the only capable starting pitchers so far this year for the Brewers, today was not the day to have a bad outing. The Brewers jumped out to a 4 to 1 lead early in the game thanks to guys like Kevin Seitzer and BJ Surhoff who combined for two singles, two doubles, and three runs in their first two at bats. Eldred began to falter and the game was locked at 4 going into the seventh when he proceeded to give up four straight hits and three runs before being yanked. The Brewers couldn’t get anything going. In fact after the second inning the Brewers only got two hits. Another said day as the Brewers get swept again in a series in may.
Chicago 8 Milwaukee 4
May 31st 1994: Brewers bats let down some great pitching as they fall to .500
The Brewers will be happy the month of may is over as they fell to 27-27 today despite great pitching from their newest pitcher. Bobby Jones went six innings gave up 2R and only 4 hits. The Bullpen went three scoreless innings including two from Rick Reed. The problem today was Oakland’s Tim Hudson who just manhandled the struggling Brewer offense. The Brewers only score was Dave Nilsson’s HR which now leads the team with 13. The Brewers are 5-13 in their last 18 games and the loss of a decent Bill Spiers bat seems to be hurting more than they would have imagined.

My thoughts on the Brewers so far.
Well I had a hot start in April and early may but have come back down to earth real quick. You already saw me cry and complain about 3 season ending injuries two to my pitchers which really hurt. Darryl Hamilton has come back down to earth in may. Dave Nilsson and Darryl Hamilton are potential all stars. Jesse Orosco has done well as a closer. Tom Brunansky is starting to show his age and might need to start splitting time to be more effective. Jaha keeps teetering between being pulled especially with Cirillo batting so well in his limited action.
