2012: The Inaugural Season
80 - 82 (3rd Place NL West)
All-Star: 1B James Loney
History
This is an alternate ending to the alternate history that I started here.
In 2012 the MLB expanded to 32 teams. One was to be located in Las Vegas, Nevada; the other in Mexico City. Las Vegas would be added to the AL West. Mexico to the NL West. In addition the Colorado Rockies switched leagues to the AL West and the Texas Rangers were moved to the AL Central.
The Las Vegas franchise was purchased by brothers Lorenzo and Frank Fertita, Owners of Station Casinos in Las Vegas. The brothers used zoning loopholes to attach a conservatively estimated billion dollar stadium to their new Viva Complex.
The Viva Stadium is an architectural and entertainment wonder. All the fast-paced excitement of Vegas is captured within the stadium. The concourse level features restaurants, slot machines, indoor skydiving, fully operable pitching and batting machines, and the Freemont Street Corridor where fans can watch baseball’s historic moments played out in LED lights overhead.
The deal upset many baseball purists who argued that having baseball so closely associated with gambling was only asking for trouble. But, in the end, bright lights, and big money won out.
After the completion of the 2011 season Fil Ihok, GM of the Washington Nationals, left his position to become the first ever GM of Los Diablos Rojos del Mexico.
Los Diablos Rojos were originally one of 16 Liga Mexicana de Béisbol teams. They have won the league championship 17 times, including 2011.
Mexico City has a distinguished baseball history and the following players have played for Los Rojos Diablos: Joakim Soria, Esteban Loaiza, Felix Jose, and Ricardo Rincon (among others *we hope to add some big names to this list).
Nueva Foro Sol is the name for the new Diablos Rojos Stadium. Named after the original stadium, it is-in a word-immense. The stadium was funded in part by the government of Mexico, the MLB, and corporate and private investors. Capacity seating is close to 100,000. Ticket prices range from quarter of a million dollar corporate boxes to $25,000 season club tickets. However, the vast majority of the tickets-those in the ‘Sombrero’-the upper deck which encircles the entire stadium-can be purchased for 50 pesos; about $3.
Ciudad del México is located at an elevation of over 7000 feet above sea level. For this reason the stadium playing field is huge.
The stadium features several unique features. Foremost among them is the centerfield berm-dubbed ‘Cuerno Del Toro’-due to the physical resemblance created by the curvature of the centerfield wall.
Ground Rules
I will be using the same ground rules as I did for my Nationals Dynasty. They can be found here.
One change will be in the Rule V Draft. Instead of doing a league wide Rule V Draft, only Los Diablos will be able to make one Rule V Selection per year. Players 25 years of age and over in the minor leagues as of March 1st will be eligible to be drafted. I must follow the MLB Rules regarding Rule V Draftees.
For the other teams I will use Jellio’s Parity Draft as a guide to do a similar draft.
I got the idea for this dynasty from a guy named abben who started this very interesting dynasty on the Mexico City Firecrackers. He never finished. Hopefully I will fare better.
The finances are a big (and pain in the ass) part of this. I did what I could to accurately reflect the cities, communities and teams.
For starters, I gave each team a fan base of +10%. I thought this fair as both teams should have novelty in their new cities bringing in fans. After each of the first two seasons (as long as I remember  ) I will decrease Fan Base by 5% so that the teams are +0% over the long haul.
For starters Los Diablos Rojos were given $30,300,000 in cash-roughly the league average-while the Luck were given slightly more-about $35,000,000.
Expansion Draft
Rosters for the two expansion teams will be filled through an expansion draft. Much thanks to everyone who helped out with the protection lists. Those people being: 200tang, eggson, Gosens, Old Fat Guy, Joe12Pack, haveacigar, Reade, and Porklett
Also a huge thanks to PotatoOfCouch who agreed to take on the roll of the Vegas GM and draft with/against me in the expansion draft.
The draft rules will be as follows:
The draft will consist of two rounds. The first round will consist of 30 picks per drafting team. The second round will consist of 6 picks per drafting team.
In the first round, each drafting team must make one selection from each team. In the second round, once a team’s player has been selected that team’s players will no longer be eligible for the draft.
The draft order (to be determined) will follow a ‘Snake’ format (1-2,2-1,1-2,2-1, etc…)

Something new?
In a ceremony conducted at the Commissioner's office, observed by noted SportsMogul reporter OldFatGuy, a coin-flip was done to determine who drafts first in the upcoming expansion draft.
After discussions involving whether a coin-flip should also be done to determine who gets to call the coin-flip, which led to discussions of whether a coin-flip should be done to determine who calls the who calls the coin flip coin flip.........................
Noted SportsMogul reporter OldFatGuy was asked by the commissioner and call the coin in the air, by stating HEADS=???? and TAILS=????. After some reluctance, OldFatGuy agreed, provided the commissioner flipped the coin VERY HIGH in the air, giving OldFatGuy's old brain enough time to work out all the words he needed to spit out.
As a result, the coin was flipped, and OldFatGuy yelled HedseqalzVegaz an TailsequalsMC, and even then, he was JUST able to spit it all out in time.
The coin landed, spun furiously for another 15 seconds, and landed on tails.
The commissioner ruled that the first pick in the upcoming draft belongs to Mexico City.
you didn't use cards OFG? :p
HaHa!!! Awesome job OFG. It is always good to have the perfect tool for the job...not...uhh...that you are a 'tool' of course.
NOTE FROM THE COMMISSIONERS OFFICE:
Upon further review, and a sobbing begging plea from Chicago's Management, the MLB has decided that the Chicago White Sox' players should NOT be eligible for the draft. The MLB sites Chicago's sparse talent at all minor league levels, declining attendance, and unimpressiveness at all levels of the organization as the reason for this late change.
For that reason the 1st round of the 2012 Expansion Draft shall be shortened to 29 rounds and the 2nd round shall be expanded to 6 rounds.
::Checking the clock on a conspicuously new watch::
It is time for our first selection. Los Diablos???
:: Dropping a crisp $100 bill on the floor::
And the First Pick of the 2012 Expansion Draft, Los Diablos Rojo choose...???
*The Draft is LIVE!!! So click the link to keep up to date
AWESOME... live drafts are the best. I remember when I moved a team to Mexico City... with an "average sized" stadium, the home run park effects would have been 254(!!!) but BBM maxes out at 200. That's crazy how huge your dimensions are, yet the stadium effects are still well above average! Should be fun to have some high-scoring games, circa Denver in the mid-1990's again.
Also, is PoC going to be starting a Las Vegas dynasty alongside yours? That could be interesting, but I'm guessing he's just filling in the role of drafting the team.
I'm just filling a role. I'm committed to my Griffey dynasty right now, but it seemed like a lot of fun participating in this massive undertaking!
He's just helping out.
And he's an awesome guy for helping out.
It could have been a really really cool idea if two guys wanted to start their own dynasties from the same place and used the same draft. Shoulda thought of that
That would be rellay cool and great start dudeQuote:

That Fil Ihok guy! Is he crazy? He had a great job in Washington!
As I'm paying attention to the draft I've got my BBM open :>
RE Jeepguy: He did/does...
RE 200tang:How are we doing so far? Feel free to give you unabashed criticism or praise!
I am definately reading now as you picked Tulo
one question I have is, are you guys drafting with peaks on or off?
------
The only thing I found odd was some of the players being protected over others on the list, but that's really just my opinion which doesn't make it right :p
------
One player that may be a good late pick just because he interests me is Ronald Belisario whos a RP for the Pirates. He's a 29 year old southpaw with FIVE PITCHES and decent enough CON/POW/MOV to provide some good decent innings for a few years. If it were me I would try him out as a starter if you're not afraid of his control and power dropping in return for endurance.

My Thoughts So Far - Seems like he's gone with a defense/pitching minded team so far. Tulo and Chris Petit are both plus defenders with decent enough offense and his pitching is looking very strong. Despite Castillo being his second drafted pitcher, he'll likely be pushed down in the rotation this year since he will likely need more time to develop before becoming a legitimate #2. Fields will provide great value in the long run, but to me he seems more suited to either setup or short relief depending on who else is drafted.

My Thoughts So Far - So far he's gone with the pitching mentality. The only two I have yet to disagree with so far are Josh Johnson ahead of Brad Penny and picking Salty second. I have yet to look deeply in to catchers not protected, but just by a quick glance I think I would have taken the Phillies Carlos Ruiz over Salty. Ruiz comes 4 years older, but also $4 million less. The contract year could be a warning sign however, but even so he wouldn't have cost you your second pick and he likely will still make less than $6 million unless he hits .400 or something ridiculous. Salty likely would have still been available in to the early teens as well imo and even if you lost out on him, there are lots of good defensive minded catchers with decent enough bats out there that could be had later on.
So far pretty good signings though and remember, this is only my opinion :)
Nice job on your analysis. And caring enough to do so...
To answer your question, I'm drafting with peaks off. I told Potato he could use them or not use them, I dunno what he picked
alright then, if I suggest anymore picks I'll be sure to try and stray away form guys with nice upside as best I can since I'm using commish mode.
ALWAYS, ALWAYS build a team from pitching, IMO. Always. If you've got good pitching, you're in almost every game. If you've got good hitting (which good pitching can stop) but mediocre pitching, there are lots of games you don't have a chance.
If I had to build a team from the bottom up, my first 5 picks are almost ALWAYS going to be pitching. Pitching, pitching, pitching. It's what wins championships.
IMO.
Of course I couldn't agree with you more, but it wouldn't be the first time a team tried to go out and acquire good offensive players over pitching, so I just thought I would point out that they had both taken the pitching approach.
The way I see it, if you drafted batters first, the other team is likely only going to sign 5 - 7 Starters that are league ready before moving on to offense and that should leave some decent ones later on. On top of that, BM loves making 50%+ of the ammy draft pitchers, so if you were banking on getting some good pitchers in next years draft and getting some decent gap fillers in the off season, going offensive minded in to the expansion draft wouldn't be too crazy.
But to each his own I guess.
Just to show an example, here are some pitchers worth looking at in the AAA-AA level that would likely have lasted quite awhile in the draft and could serve as pretty good 3-5 guys. I checked all these with peaks off btw; These are roughly ranked from best at the top to worst at the bottom and keep in mind this was quick.
AAA Gio Gonzalez(OAK)
AAA Ryan Tucker(FLA)
AA Clayton Tanner(SFG)
AA Brent Fisher(KCR)

Thanks to OFG for your support, and thanks for 200tang for your analysis!
The Johnson/Penny thing was really weird. I originally picked Johnny Cueto; he was protected but misread the sheet. But I had 2 picks in a row: did it really matter which order I was picking who? :D
As for Salty, I like a good-hitting catcher, and Ruiz didn't do it for me. I may bring him in as a backup (;)) but we'll have to see how the draft plays out...
For the record, I AM drafting with peaks on.

Thoughts on updates - Well it looks like their rotation has filled out nicely with the addition of Marquez. Adenhart and Marquez are both similar pitchers in my eyes and could be switched. Scouts have raved about Mesoraco as well so at this point he's looking like a steal this late in to the draft considering how polished he is for his age and how close he is to the majors. Whether he starts next year will be decided in the next picks, but for now he's their starter.
----
Cory Luebke is a solid pitcher who could be a back end starter on some teams, but unfortunately for him the Diablos already have quite the rotation and Luebke will be very nice insurance in case one of them succumbs to injury. Their other choice was center fielder Trevor Crowe who had the unfortunate luck to get stuck behind Grady Sizemore. Now that he will be starting in the majors we will finally be able to see what this kid can do with. Crowe is a switch hitter who also reminds me of a lite 5 tool player with an emphasis on speed.

Thoughts on updates - Middlebrooks scouting report, age and vitals all make him look like a great pickup especially considering he went in the 8th round. Xavier Paul was deemed unnecessary by the Nationals who have quite the talent in OF all throughout their system. Paul looks to be a lite 5 tool player and will be patrolling right field for quite some time.
----
D'Antona(3B) was deemed unnecessary by the Cubs most likely due to Josh Vitters, but he does make a fine starter. Although I think he over performed last year, I wouldn't put him too far off from that performance and his defense should be around league average. Third base looks like a pretty empty area in terms of players unprotected, but I think I would have gotten Encarnacion from the Atlanta Braves. He does cost 6 million so I assume POC has other ideas on where to use that money or something else, but given how many good third basemen (sorry I protected Beltre :p) are out their D'Antona is still a fine pick. The other player chosen in the 9/10 round was Logan Kensing(RP). Him and Cordero should mesh well to provide some nice innings late in the game.
And again, these are just my opinions and you shouldn't feel like I'm picking on either of you if I disagree with a pick :)
I originally wanted Ryan Dent, but he was protected, so I guess I got lucky. Will he turn into a superstar? We'll have to wait and see.
Paul: I liked him from fili's Nation's Capital dynasty. When I saw I needed someone from Washington, he was one of the first guys I looked at (I really wanted Marrero, but he was protected).
As for 3Bmen, there's a lot of talented ones (85-80 OVR) available. I keep looking at their overall ratings and seeing these mid-80 numbers and all the players are 3Bmen! Don't worry though, I have some ideas about spending that money...I am in Vegas, after all! :p
Actually there isn't a ton of depth at third base compared to the other positions.
Currently I'm looking at 4 third basemen (2 in the AL / 2 in the NL) that have good talent coupled with contracts under 4 million and one making a league minimum 420k and only one of them in a contract year :)
 Using my OWN dynasty against me!!! That's low.
Sure, throw all your money in my face. No. Really. Throw your money in my face. I could use some of it to pay some of the good players left in the draft that i don't think I can afford.

Thoughts on updates - Rob Johnson(C) was selected to become their backup catcher and he is exactly what you look for when selecting a backup catcher. He knows how to handle a pitching staff and he isn't that bad offensively projecting a .250 AVG and ~.310 OBP given enough playing time. The other player chosen with Rob, Mike Zagurski(RP), is a power pitcher who should throw lots of quality innings closing games out for the Diablos
----
Manzella(2B) is a slick fielder and will provide great defense to support the pitching staff that fili has put together. Manzella will likely end up hitting 8th due to a terrible bat and shows some nice base running, but nothing that will blow your socks off, I'm thinking ~25 SB's depending on the teams strategy. Manzella can pretty much play any position (except C) so I'm thinking fili will draft another second basemen and use Manzella as a fine utility player. Either way, starter or utility, he's a nice pickup. Ryan Perry(RP) is another power reliever who has a higher ceiling than any of the other pitchers currently in his bullpen. At the moment he lacks control and will likely end up being used in short relief until he fixes his delivery. Look for Perry in the very near future to make the conversion to closer.

Thoughts on updates - Jon Jay is a great center fielder for his price and age and shows excellent range and speed with decent offensive capabilities. Matt Antonelli(2B) was the Luck's other choice in the 11/12 round and he figures to be an average at best second basemen earning close to $4 million. His best assets are his speed, plate vision and ability to stay off the DL for whatever that is worth. The guy can definitely hit FB's which should help him against the majority of pitchers as well. San Fransisco has him as their lead off hitter due to his speed and OBP, but depending on who else the Luck acquire I see him as either a #2, 6, or 9 hitter.
----
Utility player extraordinaire Michael Cuddyer was chosen and looks to be starting in left field or sitting on the bench if they decide Gwynn Jr. is better. Cuddyer is a fine selection and even if he does lose his starting job in the future, which is very likely, he'll have value as a utility player. The other player chosen with him is Tony Gwynn Jr.(CF). If Gwynn does end up on the bench like I suspect, he will provide nice depth in the OF and can be used as a great pinch runner.
There may be a mistake or two since I had to fix it once and then messed it up again during my editing and had to edit it again xD Hopefully everything is correct though and the reason for the shortened thoughts section is I didn't want to type a ton again lol.
