Something I don't understand
Being a big time Cardinal fan. I have (seemingly) been the only one that didn't hate our closer for the past 8 years. Jason Isringhausen. He is the club leader in all time saves...had many good seasons...and struggled in 06 due to a hip injury that he tried to play through...the year that we won the world series. Right now there is talks about bringing izzy back on an incentavie laden contract...which I would be happy about. But so many fans are in an outrage about this....and I simply don't understand why. Last year he feel off. and in 06 he struggled...but through 8 seasons he had an era below (i believe) 3.00 and converted a very high percentage of his saves....so why do so many fans hate him? Do any of you have a similar situation for your fav club? I am constantly the only one that seemed to like him...and after looking more and more at his numbers I don't know why.

Hell the guy converted 32 of 34 as recently as 07. How can you hate him so much soo soon?
An example of what I am talking about:

Re: Something I don't understand
and fans really hated kennedy too. He wasn't that bad...played decent defense. I'm sure there are better second basemen out there, but man they ragged on these guys...and I guess I expect more from st. louis fans.

Re: Something I don't understand
JD Drew here in Boston. He is a fine player, but most fans here hate him. I on the other hand like him. As for the Rockies, idk, as I do not know any other Rockies fans personally, so I don't know who is the most hated that I like

Rockies fans hate a new person every week...same with Bronco fans (once Jake Plummer left...who was to hate??).
They do have a serious problem against Torrealba though. It's odd.

Re: Something I don't understand
Coming from an A's fan, they probably hate him so much because hes seems to always put on a high wire act when he comes in to save the day. When he was with us, he always made me a nervous wreck.

I understand that. He always seemed to allow the first guy to get on and tried to force certain pitches it seemed, but he always seemed to get the job done....so why hate hm? Any team would be lucky to have a closer who consistently had an era under 3

I think it's a closer thing, to be honest. The average fan is probably more likely to remember one of the six or seven blown saves, not the 30 or 35 saves the closer did convert, regardless of ERA or any other stat.
Keith Foulke was kind of the same way when he was with Boston in '04. 2.17 ERA and 32 saves, but I remember a lot of fans absolutely despising him.
-
Re: Something I don't understand
Most fans have an extreme "what-have-you-done-for-me-lately" attitude. Isringhausen was terrible in 2008, so everything he's ever done must have been terrible.

That's what I felt like it probably was.
and what Houston said.
It's gotta be a low love job for sure.
And I noticed that about Drew as well.

I don't like Torrealba because I love Iannetta and think that Iannetta should be starting more.
I don't like Willy-T because he couldn't get on base

Did you 'see all 59 comments' I doubt it. It would shoot down your pitiful attempt at sarcasm....but I'm nice. I'll do your homework for you.
Thundaroad:"J.D. stands for "Just Disabled"'
Ahmstrong88:"theres a reason why they call him nancy drew"
Neophytal:"figures... drew is always like this"
Venkball:"I love the guy but c'mon, get in shape."
Scorpio172572:"Epstein gets a free pass with his bad signings. Drew was an awful signing. Average at best getting all that money, ridiculous."
Wuxura:"Another Boras FA blowing up in our face - I hope Red Sox learn their lesson to never sign a Boras FA "
Jlvose:"What a MISTAKE signing Drew!He had the back problems coming over to Boston!!Here he is,still whimpering about the back.I would have to say this was Theos biggest mistake.....so far "
Noescapinggravity:"How can he STILL be injured?! This guy has to be the most frustrating player in baseball. It's amazing to me that Theo can make two of the two worst free agent signings in club history (Drew, Julio Lugo) and still win the 2007 World Series. "
Stryknyne: "A sore back is just a symptom. Poor JD suffers from a life-long chronic case of vaginitis - there is no cure. "
NHVikingsfan: "Vegas has the odds at 100:1 he is in the opening day lineup. Thanks Theo, what a waste of money. "
Mdsample:"and fans wonder why ticket prices are so high- anything to do with theo's [awesome] contract negotiating skills: lugo, drew, and lowell... where's manny? "
flashxiii: "Somebody please tell me that this is one of the years that his contract can be voided if he goes on the DL. I've had enough of watching Drew play for my team. "
Mikeroyne:"way to tough it out nancy drew...only 3 more yrs of this, thanks theo "
bosoxyazcelticspatriots: "This dude has been great in the post season but a wuss during the season. "
so take yer  and shove it up yer arse

I don't think they hate Drew personally, they didn't like the signing. Boston went from one injury prone RF'er to another.
He's a good player that came with high expectations.
He's been the next big thing since he came up, but never reached the projections.

Forgive me for pointing out the obvious, but don't bite if you don't wanna get bitten back.
No, sorry, I'm not gonna sift through 59 comments to read what I can already guess: a bunch of people probably posted derogatory things about Drew, too. No sh!t. You want to cherry-pick a bunch of negative blurbs, to "prove" the point, knock yourself out.
You're right, to an extent. But, not only can Red Sox fans be stupid ingrates, they can be quite the opposite. As can fans of any team, of any sport. I'm not going to get into an ultimately pointless argument about that with you.
But don't throw cr@p at an entire fan-base (of which I happen to be a part) and then get bent out of shape when someone calls you on it.
If you're incapable of handling the discussion with little more civility, don't bother replying.
(And as a courtesy, I'll resist the temptation to put an emoticon here.)

Re: Something I don't understand
well done.
I guess for me: I get annoyed when I see on mlb.com's cardinals site every fan comment seems to be a slash at Moz our GM, or a hatred line toward the Cubs. I pick on the Cubs, but just in the same, I root for them in the playoffs if they make it and we don't. I always cheer for the team that beat me. I think that shows good sportmanship and it always makes my team look better if the guys that beat us, win.
I just don't understand sometimes, and expect more from the team that I always believed to have the best fans in baseball...and then I see them behave that way. Maybe it's part of growing up, noticing that other fans just suck and are very ignorant. I appreciate this forum because many of the fans and critics of the game are realistic and seem to have a grasp on the game better then those outside of here.

Re: Something I don't understand
I am a Cardinals fan, but I was never an Isringhausen fan. I grew up watching Bruce Sutter and Todd Worrell. Then Lee Smith came along. I awlays thought Isringhausen just wasn't quite in their class. He may have had statistical success in St. Louis, but I was never excited about the idea of Jason Isringhausen slamming the door in the 9th like I was about Smith or Worrell. Also, during the most important run since 1987 Isringhausen was a non-factor. I don't dislike him, but I would prefer to have a more imposing choice as a Closer.

Re: Something I don't understand
Honestly, I feel that J.D. Drew probably has some of the best talent in the league. When the game is on the line there's no one else I would rather have in the batter's box. He carried the Red Sox last year while Ortiz was hurt and he just let himself on the DL (I've talked to a few minor league players who say he just goes on the DL without really being hurt once his team seems to be in a good position).
He sounds a lot like Manny if you ask me.
-
Re: Something I don't understand
People are just rediculous. Lowell was rock solid ever since coming over from Florida. I'd like to see what the guy criticizing his re-signing would of done after he just won World Series MVP.
Manny put up amazing numbers and was integral in their championship runs. I don't see how anyone can knock that one.
Lugo I can't say the same for, and Drew meh he's had some big moments I guess, So I can't really criticize that one too much.
It's just a case of fans being really really opinionated and not looking at the whole picture, but rather what have you done for me lately.

Well Izzy signed with the Rays. A giant middle finger to all Cards fans on this one.
