This is even dumber than the steroids stuff, do we even know if he was actually smoking, has he failed a drug test? Heck if you go a smoke shop they say that bongs are for smoking tobacco, not that thats what there for. I smoked for many years and don't have a problem with those that do. I would rather see someone smoking a joint then doing shots at a bar or friends house and driving home afterward.
You can look through millions of people's facebook photos, you will eventually see pics of people smoking, are we going to arrest everyone in the world where there are photos of them smoking?
Wow. Does this police department not have much to do if they are spending their time building a case against Phelps' weed smoking?
Making an example of someone famous isn't going to stop kids from smoking. If I had kids and they saw it I would say this "You can smoke weed after you've won 14 gold medals for your country"
I like the Conan O'Brien joke on this the other day.
The SC sheriff said they were going to try to charge Michael Phelps and arrest him, only if they can "build a case" against Phelps.
They are still looking for the 'smoking gun,' because all they have so far IS A PHOTO OF MICHAEL PHELPS SMOKING POT AND SEVERAL TAPED CONFESSIONS!
LOL...if they are going to arrest him for it, what evidence are they waiting for?
Yeah, this is more ridiculous than the steroids stuff. Way more ridiculous.
This whole thing is way out of hand. I don't see why he gets all in trouble for it when loads of other people don't. He did not choose to be a hero, he just swam because he liked it. His talents should not make him have fewer rights then normal people.
People in this country love to see celebrities fall....Paris Hilton, Kobe, etc etc. RSR said it exactly right, but the reverse is the same as well. They shouldn't also get special treatment because of who they are as well.
Uhh, while I agree that celebrities might get targeted sometimes, you can't even begin to compare Kobe's sexual assault case to this Phelps nonsense. Kobe was not targeted by the media and public perception because he was a celebrity; he was bashed because he was charged with a serious crime in sexual assault. BIG difference.
I think they should arrest the idiot who tried to sell the bong on Ebay.
Uh... they did. And they arrested seven other people who were at the party (the bong owner reportedly wasn't even there).

that is soo dumb
then again, I guess it's as dumb as smoking pot to begin with
Ha... just came across a little bit of insight into Sheriff Lott's mindset:

So I wonder if he used that piece of equipment in his raids at the homes of these dangerous bong-hitters?
And exactly how much of his department budget did this idiot spend on an urban assault vehicle?
This entire 'case' is completely and utterly laughable. This sheriff is about as 'in touch' as the parents from Footloose trying to ban kids from dancing.
"hey man we need money for more weed what should we do?"
"Sell the bong maaaan! The Phelps bong put it on ebay"
"That is...an...awesome idea!"
That is probably how that whole "hey lets sell the bong that Michael Phelps used on eBay" conversation went down.
Because they obviously didn't think things through.
