Winners attract fans. That isn't hard to understand, is it? Its true, not only in all sports, but in all areas of life in general.
For the record though, I grew up in New England. The first sports team I liked as a kid was the Red Sox, and I have been a fan for over 30 years.
And a lot of people like to root for underdogs. Of course I understand that winning teams bring in fans....but those also known as bandwagon fans. Which I interpret as "annoying" fans.Quote:

It's easy to become a fan of the team your favorite player plays for. If Ozzie had stayed in San Diego, I would likely be a Padres fan today.
I grew up 45 mins from Fenway. The Sox were my loveable losers for so many years, and it endeared them.
So basically, the fact that New England is 6 states, with only one baseball team, means there is a large nexus of fans by pure geography only. As opposed to say, living in mid-California, when you get to choose between 5 teams.
