Need a baseball rule guru to help me out here. I was under the impression that if a pitcher was ineffective, even if he should get the win, he may not. For example he pitches the 9th with a 5-1 lead, loses the lead but his team wins in the bottom of the inning. I have a friend who says the rules say he gets the win and thats that. I thought the scorer, or other offical, could rule that there is no win awarded. There is six pack of Corona, with lime, riding on this.
Nope, he gets the win. Every game has a winner and a loser.

the first relief pitcher pitches effectively, the official scorer should not presumptively credit that pitcher with the win, because the rule requires that the win be credited to the pitcher who was the most effective, and a subsequent relief pitcher may have been most effective. The official scorer, in determining which relief pitcher was the most effective, should consider the number of runs, earned runs and base runners given up by each relief pitcher and the context of the game at the time of each relief pitcher’s appearance. If two or more relief pitchers were similarly effective, the official scorer should give the presumption to the earlier pitcher as the winning pitcher.

I bet they would go back to the last completed inning where one team was ahead and call it a game after that point, if that point is far enough along to be considered an official game. If not possible, I bet they'd just call it a rainout and just cancel the game outright.Quote:

There has to be a win awarded if a team wins a game, but where you're probably being confused is that there is some flexibility given to the official scorer in a game in which there are several relief pitchers. The essence of that is that if a pitcher is in the game when his team takes the lead, but a successive pitcher plays more important role in his team winning (pitches "more effectively"), that later pitcher can be awarded the win.Quote:
