Trevor Hoffman to choose team in the next 24-48 hours?

6:37pm: Hoffman is in discussion with the Brewers over the "parameters of a contract" according to Ken Rosenthal. His source, who has knowledge of the negotiations, says, "It's got legs."
5:37pm: Jon Heyman echoes the Brewers and Dodgers are in the running and that Hoffman "could sign in coming days." Heyman reiterates Hoffman's interest to say close to his "home base" in Anaheim, CA.

Where do you see Hoffman ending up? As a Brewers fan, I would love Hoffman as the closer in Milwaukee. Last season he had a 1.037 WHIP, and a 2.7 ERA on the road, his stats were still good, even on a medicore Padres team. What do you think of Hoffman and what would be a good fit for him?

The better way to look at it is that he had a 3.77 ERA while pitching half his games in the best pitcher's park in the majors. A 2.87 ERA in 15 innings tells you nothing, especially considering the other 30 innings he threw were in Petco Park, and he didn't do well.
That being said, at a solid price, he'd be a nice pickup for Milwaukee. I think he's got a year or two left.
Re: Trevor Hoffman to choose team in the next 24-48 hours?
I think ERA is overrated to be honest. Here is what I see
9 BB in 45.1 IP
38 H in 45.1 IP
Never had a season above a 1.2 WHIP
Last season his WHIP was 1.04 which was his 6th best in his career in 15 seasons. To me, he still has it easily. His 3.77 ERA is also based on a really crappy team, and to me his numbers were better then 05 and 06. The thing that concerns me is he is 41 years old and he gave up 8 homers, which is the 3rd most in his career, espically pitching in a pitchers park, you would think his number would go down. But he would be a great signing for Milwaukee, and he easily is one of the best closers on the market right now. He also wants to play for Milwaukee, so it's not like he's just playing for the money, he actually wants to play in Milwaukee.

You're right. Especially for a reliever.

His ERA was pretty much purely because he gave up 8 home runs, which has nothing to do with his team.
If he comes at a reasonable price for one year, it's a good signing.
Re: Trevor Hoffman to choose team in the next 24-48 hours?
He is alright for the Brewers. I mean there aren't that many closers left and he is probably the best of the bunch that is left. Although he is about an average closer now, so Brewer fans shouldn't expect too much

But you used his road ERA as a reason you want him in your first post?
Anyways, he was pitching in one of the best, if not the best, pitchers park in the league.

The 8 homers is kinda weird. 7 of the 8 came at home. But his flyball rate was just a smidge over his average but his HR/Fly ball was insane. His velocity looks pretty consistent over the last 4 years. Bad luck?

Probably.

Even though that same article says "5:37pm: Jon Heyman echoes the Brewers and Dodgers are in the running and that Hoffman "could sign in coming days." Heyman reiterates Hoffman's interest to say close to his "home base" in Anaheim, CA." Milwaukee isn't exactly close to his "home base".
It's not like there are a bunch of suitors knocking down his door, and with the slow market this offseason, NO free agent is going to say that he doesn't want to play for a team that shows interest in him. C.C. wanted to stay with Milwaukee too.

The ninth inning at Dodger Stadium could be Trevor Time this year.
As the San Francisco Giants consider trumping the Dodgers’ offer to Manny Ramirez, the Dodgers have offered all-time save leader Trevor Hoffman a one-year contract to be their closer.
The Milwaukee Brewers also are in pursuit of Hoffman, who is expected to make his decision this week. It is uncertain whether the Brewers have offered a two-year guarantee to combat their geographical disadvantage, since Hoffman lives in northern San Diego county.
“He’s got three young boys, so he could go home a lot more if he signs with Los Angeles,” Brewers General Manager Doug Melvin told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. “That’s what free agency allows a player to do—pick where it’s best suited for him to play.”
Hoffman made $7.5 million last season with the San Diego Padres, who withdrew a $4-million offer to him in November. The Dodgers’ offer exceeds $4 million.
Dodgers General Manager Ned Colletti declined to comment. Rick Thurman, the agent for Hoffman, did not return two messages from The Times.
After doing a bit more investigation into Hoffman...One year makes me a lil nervous, two would make me a lot nervous.
