REPORT: Giants Offer Manny Ramirez 4-Year Deal

Re: REPORT: Giants Offer Manny Ramirez 4-Year Deal
To be quite honest, I don't know if bleacherreport.com is the most reputable source in the world
-
Re: REPORT: Giants Offer Manny Ramirez 4-Year Deal
it may not be, but there was some MLB.com report on the giants website to the same effect yesterday.
I hope they don't do this.
Its going to stunt the growth of Shierholtz and Lewis. Hopefully its just to drive the price up for the Dodgers.

It isn't. I pretty much stick only to mlbtraderumors.com for hot stove information. They're very careful about the wording they use and about using a variety of sources to confirm information. They're generally the most accurate, and they "break" (by pointing out the first correct, breaking source) 95% of all the important free agent news before any other site.
Speaking of, mlbtraderumors.com has been on top of this Manny/Giant thing for days, and the 4 year offer is widely disputed by most media covering it. This is actually somewhat old news, and seemingly incorrect news.
From what I understand, the Giants and Manny have been talking, but no concrete offer has been made, and there are plenty of stipulations involved (trading Winn, Roberts or Rowand, for one). And even if a deal *has* been offered, there's more rumors about the Giants offering a 3 year deal than rumors about the Giants offering a 4 year deal.
I'm thinking, either Sabean takes a different approach to big free agents than other GMs (possibly being more active in talks, and more open about information surrounding talks), or it's a Boras trick to get the Dodgers to up their ante.
I think there's about 5 or so teams interested in Manny, with the Dodgers being (by far) the most likely to land him.
I also predict that Adam Dunn will sign within 3 days of Manny signing with a team.

Thats a very astute observation. Did you also notice they did not have more ML ready pitchers than they had spots to fill as they do in the OF?

Re: REPORT: Giants Offer Manny Ramirez 4-Year Deal
I'm pretty sure this is the same report that denied itself.

The San Francisco Giants are pursuing free-agent slugger Manny Ramirez and have offered him a four-year deal, a well-connected source told CBS 5

A team spokesperson told CBS 5, "it's not happening."

Re: REPORT: Giants Offer Manny Ramirez 4-Year Deal
regarding the hot stove, i've basically decided that any Jon Heyman reports are to be completely overlooked and dismissed by me. The guy was obnoxious during the Texeira games, completely overreported and his information was almost always wrong. The guys had me rolling my eyes in the past but this was the last straw.

Is this article written by the son of Danny DeVito?

Re: REPORT: Giants Offer Manny Ramirez 4-Year Deal
This would be an idiotic move. They still don't have the pieces to go around him, and nobody knows if Johnson has another season. They would only be throwing away money. Oh well, better here than in New York...

I always laugh at these statements. Small markets that try to compete to the best of their ability and maintain a fan interest by signing vets are mocked because they 'waste' money and have no legitimate shot....while when they DON'T spend any money and save it for when their prospects develop and they are legitimate contenders (if that happens) they are mocked because they aren't trying.
Kudos to the Giants if they do this.

The Giants are a small market team!??!?!?!? Agree with the sentiment...but I'd be surprised to hear that the Giants are considered a small market team.

They are not, but they have stupid contracts. Rowand. Zito. Winn. Add Manny in, and you have another old guy on the downside of his career, and it will likely be around $23 Million, That over 4 years, and then all of the other contracts= A LOT of aging guys locked up for a while.

They aren't 'small market' but not one of the elite markets either. The example really is one more often with small markets but fit here with the Giants as well.

would you prefer they go with youth which isn't ready and lose 100+ games? They are trying to do what fans 'claim' they want teams to do...spend money and try to compete yearly. Its not their fault zito sucks.

Re: REPORT: Giants Offer Manny Ramirez 4-Year Deal
Signing Manny Ramirez wouldn't be a stupid move for the Giants. Signing Manny Ramirez for four years would be.
-
Re: REPORT: Giants Offer Manny Ramirez 4-Year Deal
I'd say Rowand isn't on the downfall, he is one of their best offensive/defensive players. WHICH isn't saying much, but he puts up consistent numbers year in and year out when he doesn't break his face.
-
Re: REPORT: Giants Offer Manny Ramirez 4-Year Deal
If they signed Manny, he could play rover, and Rowand and Winn could play a two man outfield.

wow, did you see his season in 08? For all the hype around his defense, I was very dissappointed when he came to SF. And his offense stinks to, which I expected.

It is their fault that they signed him when all signs pointed to "run away fast"

He probably was afraid to break his face again.

This past season he sucked, and did not break his face... Hmmm, shows what happens when you leave a hitters park....

He didn't suck. He did what he did in 2005 and 2006. Low 90's OPS+ with solid center field defense, solid player, not worth the contract though.

Re: REPORT: Giants Offer Manny Ramirez 4-Year Deal
The Giants can get Manny, as long as the Mets don't get him I'll be happy.
-
Re: REPORT: Giants Offer Manny Ramirez 4-Year Deal
I'm sorry, but I have seen much better CF def in ATT than his. He made alot of bad throws trying to throw the runner out. He just doesn't have the accuracy for that.
I think Shierholtz could do a better job playing center than him. From what little I have seen of him, he has a very strong, and pretty accurate arm. I saw him show Rowand up with his arm a couple times at the end of the season.
Thats why I wish the Giants could move Winn too, I want to see Shierholtz.
-
Re: REPORT: Giants Offer Manny Ramirez 4-Year Deal
FWIW, rogue9, your "analysis" agrees with Ultimate Zone Rating, which scored Rowand at -12 runs in 2008, but that could just be that he had an off year, as he was above average every other year of his career.

Does UZR factor in outfield throwing data? I think not

Not currently. I assumed rogue9 was talking about his overall impression of Rowand's defense, and not just his throwing arm. But, as I said, since this is likely the first year that rogue9 saw a lot of Rowand, his overall impression of his defense does match up with at least one statistic. It doesn't match up with FRAA which has Rowand at +2 in 2008 (and +6, +4, +13, 0 in the years back through 2004). UZR, though, is a more advanced system than FRAA (currently. BP is in the process of incorporating Play-by-play data into FRAA for the years for which it's available).

Re: REPORT: Giants Offer Manny Ramirez 4-Year Deal
I was not using any statistical analysis, just my own eye. As I said, I saw Shierholtz make much better throws right after Rowand threw one off line several times. Rowand plays hard and tries every play, but it seemed like he was trying to hard to make something happen. My personal opinion is that he took too much personal responsibility for the team's losses and was trying to make up for it. And it seemed more often than not he ended up far off line with his throws home from deep center (in ATT), and make his characteristic diving plays, sometimes he'd come up good but others one of the corner out fielders would have to get the ball cause he was on the ground.
I love that he trys his hardest every time, and hes got the right attitude, but he was not by any means very impressive in CF.

I know. I was just pointing out that your eye matches up perfectly with one of the more advanced defensive statistics.
