Dungy Considering Leaving For Good

Hearing this makes me sad, but I do understand that family comes first, and it should be with anybody. The game of football would really miss him if he chose to retire. He is too young to go, like Cowher.
Re: Dungy Considering Leaving For Good
Should this be filed under "Still" or "Again" ?

I think you do not know enough about Dungy and the impact he has on players to make a statement like that. It is well known, if you know your football, that his players are about as close to being his family as a coach can get, which is credited to his enormous success.
Which is why he has had trouble getting away from the game in seasons past. As this article states, he did not want to leave the Colts in a dire coaching situation. Why? Because he cares. Hes not like a Favre where he just padding numbers for his selfish legacy, but he legitimately cares about the players he coaches, but knows that family comes first.
Re: Dungy Considering Leaving For Good
He's just stealing Mike Holmgren's idea. :)

As a Tampa Bay fan i have huge amount of respect for Dungy and everything he means to his players and the team he coachs.
My point was simply that anyone thats followed football for the last few years, know that Dungy has had this dilema.
I do not think he motivation are "Favre-ian" , who seems more like he just can't leave being the center of attention. But Dungy seems truely torn between his desire to move on and do other things with his life, and his respect for the players he coaches and the team he is employed by.

Favre padding numbers?
Do you think Jordan padded his numbers when he came back with the Wizards?
I just think Favre thought he could step right in and take the Jets all the way.
The NFL doesn't work like that. Definitely a selfish play, but only because he thought too much of his own ability.
Re: Dungy Considering Leaving For Good
I have the utmost respect for Tony Dungy. I personally feel that if he does have serious doubts about whether or not he should keep coaching, maybe that's a sign he should step aside for awhile at least. You cannot 'half ass' coaching a professional sports team and have it work, and if you have doubts you probably aren't 100% committing yourself to coaching.

Yep he was all about padding numbers, the New York Jets were never a super bowl caliber team, even when Favre arrived.
Re: Dungy Considering Leaving For Good
I dunno...I just think Favre's one of those guys who doesn't know how to let it go. I think he played where he could this year...same as Jordan played for the Wizards because they were willing to start him.

Hey now :p bet at 8-3 you didnt think that
Re: Dungy Considering Leaving For Good
Actually, I knew the Jets were overrated all season long. Losing to Oakland really sealed the deal for me.
Re: Dungy Considering Leaving For Good
I didn't say he was doing it for favre's reasons, but the fact that he says he doesn't know whether he's coming back or not every year is the same as...you guessed it, favre

Yea  good point :(
Re: Dungy Considering Leaving For Good
At least he will be making his decision in a timely manner, and the Colts do have Caldwell ready to take over.
Speaking of Caldwell, how are these "coaches in waiting" able to take over right away with the Rooney rule and all?

i don't think they can....haslett couldn't sign an extension earlier this year b/c the rams would have to obey the rooney rule first
