They thought of the attendance boost when they signed Boggs, McGriff, and Canseco.... and look where that got 'em

but remember... they had no team aorund them then.. now they can pitch and just need a little help hitting. Manny could be that help.
now I was looking at all the deals Tampa signed... noone is leaving that team abter 2009... so for 2 years they are locked up. Kazmir is the 1 guy who excalates a lot in 2010.
But look.. He is the same age as they were, big contract... The only difference is he is still dominant. But they signed them as attractions, to no avail. Their only hope attendance wise would be if they tamed Manny yet had him use his crazy antic to their advantage. i could see him and Maddon getting along, they are loose, and he would be near his home. But still, would he be worth all the money? What if the crowds don't show up? How do they afford to hold a powerhouse team together?
I want you to reread this statement and tell me what's wrong with it.
Regardless of the attendance boost, Manny would be a great fit for pure baseball reasons.Quote:

Because they already have locked up that powerhouse team for longer than they'd sign Manny for.Quote:

contracts up before 2010
Troy Percival rhp
Chad Bradford rhp
Akinori Iwamura 2b (otion at 4.25 in 2010 wich is a no brainer the way he has played I think)

Upton will be in his 1st or 2nd year of arbitration which could hurt them.
Pena is thru 2010
Kazmir is 2011 with an option for 2011
Sheilds is 2011 but under their control thru 2014
Price is 2012
Longoria is 2013 with options out to 2016.
They honestly may be set for a while :D they are in even better shape than I thought :D
Tampa may be the perfect fit for Manny, but Manny isn't the perfect fit for Tampa.
This depends alot on what Tampa Thinks it can do. If they want to take a crack at seeing if they can sustain a higher payroll Manny is a great fit, and, with options falling away A two year deal maybe an outside possibilty.
1- this would show people that Tampa means business and is willing to spend to stay competitve while thing are going well.
2- If it works, and fans show up, Manny will be coming off the Payroll as Tampa can decide whether to resign some of the younger players that will need contracts.
3- If it dosen't work, and fans still are ambivalent in Tampa; then they can prove the need for a new stadium/relocation.
I think Tampa would pay most definetly if they could get Manny for only two years, and he'd be a great fit. The problem is, Manny doesn't want two years, he wants 3-4. If it were only 2 years he'd be in LAD by now. I can't see Tampa going longer than 2.
