Re: Nats Fail with Tex, but on the bright side..
Ok, I now really believe that I, just some old fat guy, could do a better job of GM than Jim Bowden. I didn't ever really want to go that far, but now, there, I've said it. :p

Re: Nats Fail with Tex, but on the bright side..
Patterson's not a bad player to have, particularly on a minor league deal. He's an excellent bench player - great defense, speed. He's horrendously miscast as an everyday player, and even moreso as an everyday leadoff hitter, but if the Nationals don't fall into the Dusty Baker trap, he could turn out to be a solid pick up.

Re: Nats Fail with Tex, but on the bright side..
From the blurb on their website about Patterson:
Quote:
Patterson, 29, played for the Reds in 2008 and hit .205 with 10 home runs and 38 RBIs.
Now for those not paying attention, the key number up there would be the .205
EDIT: Or, for those of you who like to play the SABR game, with nearly 400 plate appearances, an OPS+ of 48

Don't let yourself get so down. The Nationals also signed right-hander Jorge Sosa, left-hander Gustavo Chacin, infielder Jose Castillo and catcher Gustavo Molina.
That should make you feel better.

Go for a quick jog while you're at it. Don't hesitate in starting your New Year resolution!

Ok, I just did. Whew, feels better. Maybe I should weigh and see how much I lost???:D
The only thing worse than signing Patterson would be if Peter Gammons is right and they sign Manny. Please God, don't let Jim Bowden be THAT foolish. Please. Pretty please.

Re: Nats Fail with Tex, but on the bright side..
I have thought of an idea OFG! Lose weight until your weight matches Corey Patterson's batting average! Or go extreme and equal his OPS+ :D

Or better yet maybe the Nats could sign someone whose batting average would equal my weight. (other than Manny)

He's not THAT bad. He's terrible against lefties, which is a big reason why he sucks as an every day player. However, as a lefty pinch hitter, pinch runner, and late-inning defensive replacement, you could certainly do worse.
But really, it's a minor league contract. It's got no risk. The only risk comes from him making the team and the manager being a fool and using him more than he should be. If Dusty Baker was the manager, this would be a terrible move, as it was for the Reds, simply because Baker can't resist speedy veterans that suck at getting on base (thus leaving the bases "unclogged") out of the leadoff spot. But, with Manny Acta, a guy whose openly expressed his love for OBP and relative aversion to bunting and stolen bases, you can be assured that Patterson will likely be using his proper (and effective) role.

The Nats also signed Gustavo Chacin

Re: Nats Fail with Tex, but on the bright side..
You know what, OFG, I think you can USE your frustration with Bowden...use all of that rage and bust out a couple sets of pushups, situps, wind sprints, whatever you're feeling at the time. Knowing that idiot, you should be ripped by the All Star Game. :D

Re: Nats Fail with Tex, but on the bright side..
Arctic Blast has a point. If you are able to come up with an elaborate process to use with free agency in Baseball Mogul, I'm sure you could come up with a workout plan based around failures of the 2009 Nationals. Every boneheaded move by Bowden, every strikeout by Nats hitters, every loss, etc could all equal an aspect of your workout plan.

Warming the bench for someone who can really play.
