Official college bowl games thread
Here's a thread for some talk about all the bowls in general. Which ones are you looking forward to? Which ones do you think you can pick as locks? Which ones suck?
Here's my initial rundown:
This bowl season as a whole is kind of a letdown. This season sees a lot of great teams with very good championship arguments (or at least BCS arguments) being left out in the cold. The BCS bowl matchups are pretty disappointing, but most of the games should be good. But I'd prefer to have seen Alabama match up against Texas as a 1b championship game with Utah playing Ohio State (or preferably, a team that isn't Ohio State and is more deserving than Ohio State).
The worst bowl: Orange. VaTech vs. Cincinnati sticks out as a terrible game considering that it's a BCS bowl game. In my opinion, this game does nothing but make an argument against the BCS. I hope it lives up to its billing and ends up being a horribly boring game.
The best bowls: Rose and Poinsettia. USC against Penn State should be one hell of a game. I can't wait to see how that Penn State offense does against the Trojan defense. And Boise State vs. TCU in the Afterthought Bowl is an unbelievable matchup. It's just a shame that they had to do it in such a lower class bowl.
Matchups that I would love to see instead: Texas vs. Alabama, Utah vs. Ohio State, Boise State vs. Texas Tech, TCU vs. Michigan State, Ball State vs. Missouri, Georgia vs. Oklahoma State, BYU vs. Oregon
My picks in select bowls:
Oklahoma over Florida
USC over Penn State
Texas over Ohio State (by a huge margin)
Alabama over Utah
VaTech over Cincinnati
Boise State over TCU
Ole Miss over Texas Tech
Oklahoma State over Oregon
Georgia over Michigan State
Oregon State over Pittsburgh
LSU over Georgia Tech
Notre Dame over Hawaii
South Carolina over Iowa
Missouri over Northwestern
BYU over Arizona
Vanderbilt over Boston College

Re: Official college bowl games thread
Yeah, there are way too many bowl games. 68 out of the 120 teams DESERVE to go a game? I don't think so. January 1st used to have some good games at one point, but look at who is playing this year. Blech.

Maybe they'll luck out and have nice weather that day so they can sell a few more dozen tickets to locals?

Re: Official college bowl games thread
I totally agree with what you guys are saying about there being to many bowl games. In my opinion it is ridiculous to allow teams who played .500 ball to go to a bowl game. They need to go back to 11-game schedules so this cannot happen. Of course that will not happen because universities want to keep the 12th game for money reasons and for the major programs to play a garbage opponents from 1AA.

Re: Official college bowl games thread
No one picking Oregon over OK ST? I think that may be the best NON BCS bowl this year by far.
I picked Oregon because of I think they can win...but I'm not an objective watcher lol. But I think the UO Okie St game will be a game and a half to watch.

Re: Official college bowl games thread
The Navy/Wake and Fresno/CSU games were pretty entertaining earlier today, but this USF/Memphis game is a clunker. 1-1 in my bets so far, just need either team to score once to move to 2-1. BYU/Arizona tonight should be a good one.

Re: Official college bowl games thread
I lost my 33 point and 22 point games, but won my 30 point game (It's a confidence rankings)

OSU will CRUSH Oregon completely. Or at least they better

Re: Official college bowl games thread
Dangit, 1-1-1 on my bowl game bets. Had over 55 in the USF game, and pushed it.

Nope. Oregon is a better team then people think. They will play a good game. Remember they beat the living hell out of an Oregon State team that only needed a win to clinch a rose bowl berth.
Oregon OSU will be a close hard fought matchup and a shoot out.

I was sort of hoping for a better ending than Boise throwing up 2 ints though :(
I realy didn't care which team won but I thought the ending was dissapointing.

Holiday Bowl last night was a really good game. Too bad that Dez Bryant was hurt in the 2nd half, he had a monster game going.

The Holiday Bowl is one that I make a point to watch every year. That, the Alamo Bowl, and the Chick-fil-A Bowl are the 3 pre-New Year's Day games that I circle. They always seem to have good games lined up.

Re: Official college bowl games thread
Scoring explosion today in the Sun Bowl. Oh wait.
-
Re: Official college bowl games thread
Man, that was a painful game to watch if you like offense. Congrats to OSU.
Kind of dissapointed that I can't watch the Gophers/Jayhawks game, just more reason to get DirectTV...

Wow Pac-10 really is having a down year (sarcasm)
It'll be nice to be undefeated in bowl games this year
-
Re: Official college bowl games thread
LSU really came to play, 35-3 at the half.
-
Re: Official college bowl games thread
Wow .. USC is embarrassing Penn St. , Penn St defense is getting absoluelty torched.
-
Re: Official college bowl games thread
utah is running shit so far in this one
-
Re: Official college bowl games thread
Congrats to Utah. While I thought that 'Bama would win, I thought that Utah would keep it within 7 points, but they sure came to play tonight.

Re: Official college bowl games thread
Im glad Saban lost, he is a shitty NFL coach, and I hope he has nothing but failure in Alabama, even though I respect Bear Bryant.

What college coach is ever good in the NFL, lol. Completely different system.
-
Re: Official college bowl games thread
Saban is a great college coach. Just look what he has done at Alabama already. Yeah he lost the bowl game, but a BCS bowl game in only his second year there. He'll get a better quarterback next season (Parker-Wilson isn't very good and I think he's graduating?? Correct me if I'm wrong) and his team has shown that they can contend as a national title threat. Watch out for Bama in the coming years.

Bama wasn't even SUPPOSED to compete this year, they were supposed to win 9 games or so and go to a pretty good bowl. Next year was supposed to be their BCS run, but it came one year early. I can't wait to see how good they'll be next year.

Jimmy Johnson
Tom Coughlin isn't bad
Switzer won a SB also didn't he?
Mariucci wasn't bad
-
Re: Official college bowl games thread
Wow... the Sugar Bowl was great.
Goodbye, BCS.
If Florida beats Oklahoma, you can expect a very, very interesting vote in the AP poll for the AP champion.

Johnson and Coughlin definitely did well. I don't count Mariucci because he spent several years as an NFL assistant before being a head coach...he had time to adjust to the pro game. Switzer won with Johnson's team, then promptly had it collapse under his 'leadership'.
