That really isn't true. We had 88 million dollars of salary off the books this offseason. Thus we had money to spend. But I've read articles saying the Yankees front office is looking to lower the team payroll a bit from the 2008 season, so one can assume they won't go over the 2008 payroll. So at most, they have 88 million in total to spend. And assuming the Sabathia and Burnett deals are distributed evenly over the years, they've already spent 39.5 million of it. If Pettitte resigns for 10 million, you can take it up to 50 million already spent. And since we probably need a power bat, you can add another 15-20 million to that. And with them wanting to trim payroll a bit, I think that is all you will see from the Yankees. We have one big signing left in us. Not like we can sign all of the amazing free agents who are left

Totally agree with you here. In two of the past three years in the AL East(probably the TOUGHEST hitting division in the league), he has had an ERA below 4. And the other year, his ERA was just a hair above 4. He has also averaged above 1k/ip for the past two seasons. Not only that, but contrary to the popular "he is too injured" belief, he has pitched over 200 innings in 2 of the past 4 seasons. And has pitched atleast 165 innings in 3 of the past 4 seasons. I am not saying he isn't an injury risk, but he isn't near a player like Carl Pavano in injuries, either

I still find it far too convenient that the seasons AJ actually puts in a full workload are the seasons when there's money on the line. Every OTHER year, he constantly says his elbow's tight. Enjoy those 20 starts a year, Yanks!

Giving a fifth year to Burnett, getting in a bidding war with themselves with Sabathia....ahhh, the Yankees. :rolleyes:

I'm not faulting the Yanks for anything, but come on...money is CLEARLY not an object to them relative to the rest of the league.

In retrospect, I'm happy that he went to the Yankees and not to Atlanta. We only have to face him a couple of times now.

Yeah, true dat. I swear I'm never going to listen to a Steinbrenner again. Late last year Hank said publicly that his goal was going to be to get the Yankees to lower their obligations under the Luxury tax. And I took him at his word.

They basically said that they AREN'T going to go above last year's team payroll amount. They lost 88 million dollars this year, so they aren't going to spend more than 88 million dollars this year.

Include Swisher, Sabathia, Pettitte's probable 10 million dollars, the backloaded contracts which increase this year(Rodriguez's increases 5 million this year, Cano's by 3 million), and the increases Wang, Nady, and Bruney will get in abritration, and that's atleast 65 million of that 88 million already spent. Let's say we get Cameron. Add 10 million, and that means we will only have 13 million left to spend at most

It isn't like we have unlimited funds. We aren't going over last year's payroll, and we've already spent a lot of our spending money

Who cares if they aren't going over last year's payroll. It is still going to be monstrous compared to the rest of the league. Thus, to them, money clearly isn't a factor in most of their decisions. You trying to argue that the Yanks are somehow being careful financially b/c they are "only" offering gigantic money to Sabathia, Burnett, probably Texiera and Manny and maybe Sheets, but that's it...come on, you sound like a crazy person.

I don't know why you are getting so defensive about somebody saying that money is no object to the Yanks compared to the rest of the league. This is probably why there are so many people that hate the Yankees AND their fans.....

I would be more worried if they built up a farm system and built their team with youth than free agents. So I say let them do what they do, they have shown us over the last 8 years that it doesnt work signing every free agent they can.

Agreed. As a sox fan, I honestly get childish giddy joy watching the Yankees spend grotesquely on FA's and then fall apart early in the season. Of late they have played better in the last couple 2nd halves, but it doesn't take the enjoyment gained early in the season as they struggle and have bewilderment on their faces as they can't figure it out. It is great comedy.

The moves are really pushing the sox to sign Texiera and I must say i'm growing to the idea and want to see it happen. Keep those big FA signings coming Yucks...I love it!
