I hope not but... I would COMPLETELY understand. 1st ballot should be unanamus but he wont if randy retired it would be a WILD ballot since it COULD have been Smoltz, Glavine,Maddux,Johnson, Schilling. talk about a SERIOUS pitching ballot. i think either Glavine or Smoltz and Schilling would be left off since they wont want 5 guys, 3 from the same team all on 1 ballot. makes no sense to me but you know how weird the voters are
*sigh* I'm happy for him sad for baseball lol
Baseball without Greg harrasing Rooks will be different....
That sucks. At least I got to see him in person in Dodger blue this year
Wow, could this just be the first of several big names??? I'm wondering if Glavine and Smoltz, long time friends and teammates don't follow. And if so, imagine that Hall of Fame class, Maddox, Glavine, and Smoltz will solidify it probably on coattails. Then that leaves Mike Mussina the odd man out, once again a victim of luck.
It could get very interesting over the next couple of weeks in terms of retirements.
It'd be a bit poetic if Maddux, Smoltz and Glavine kept the Moose out of the Hall on his first try.
They are big parts of the reason he didn't get his due while he was playing, why not look up at their asses one more time?
I THINK the odd man out besides Moose is I THINK Smoltz tho I think he was better than Glavine
He's looks like he's 75 (no offence)
Yeah, I here ya, that's why I mentioned coattails. I think IF Maddox, Glavine, and Smoltz all retire this offseason, the voters are going to lump them together in the voting as well. I think Smoltz alone might've been questionable (not in my mind), but I'd be willing to bet that IF this happens (all three retire), that the voters won't be able to resist that HOF class.
Think about how good Johnson was and how he DOMINATED with strikeouts right... now imagine that Nolan Ryan had 13-14% MORE strikeouts... at the moment 1,000 and if he gets to 5,000 he would STILL be 700 short... god thats amazing
Smoltz was better than Glavine but he didn't have the longevity unfortunately. Still all 3 of three of them so go in at the same time, would be cool!
They were the face of the Braves for over a decade and a half and Atlanta hasnt been the same since they left and/or began their downward spiral.
Its sad to see him go, I think it will be a very long time, if ever, before we see someone so mechanically perfect as Maddux again. Maddux in his prime I will take anyday over just about every Hall of Fame pitcher out there.
I've always been a Maddux fan, so I'm sad to see him leave the game.
If Smoltz and Glavine follow suit, there's absolutely no way that the 3 don't make it into the Hall on the first ballot together. Above everything, the writers like stories, and the 3 players that were mostly responsible for the incredible run of dominance by the Braves entering the Hall of Fame together is just way too good of a story to pass up (and for once, I completely agree with the writers).
I agree, it would be silly to exclude one of them.
And if Randy Johnson hangs em up too, you've got the Johnson, Maddox, Smoltz and Glavine class of 2013. Then, once again, it would seem Moose Mussina would be the victom of bad luck as I'm guessing the voters would leave him off on such a ballot.
But, all of this is just speculation. I've heard rumors that Smoltz really does want to make a go of it next year, and Johnson really is considering it. It wouldn't surprise me to hear Glavine go ahead and retire though.
Maddux issues one last heartfelt pitch
litteraly sitting at work my eyes welled up. this game is losing a reall class act and probalbly the best pither I will ever see in my lifetime.
I dont care what anyone says about this...
I know understand what people talk aobut when they saw Mantle, Dimaggio, Page, Ruth (my great grandfather talked about seeing him) Seaver, Carlton, Williams... its a feel of absolute joy, and I dont think guys like Greg really understand how much people are going to miss them. Not that I want him to come back and hang on forever but I really am going to miss this guy... when Chipper retires, and Smoltz, and Glavine hang up their cleats it will be nothing like what I feel for this guy... I don't know how many times I saw him pitch at shea but to know ill never see it again is a damn shame.
Man-crush, weirdo, gay, whatever u want to call it... It's ok to love guys like him... and not that he is going to read this but I'm gonna miss you maddux, and good luck Mad Dog
