Re: Should the Red Sox push hard for Texiera??
They would be foolish not to sign Tex. Drew and Lowell can be replaced. Tex gives them a huge, excellent offensive presence (above average without) and Youk has played other positions before so he can slide to a 3rd or OF slot. He's not sluggish and immobile like Ortiz, who also seems to be on the decline (performing-wise and health). They have the money to sign Tex and you can't always bank on your farm system (look at the Braves and Royals). And look how long it took the Rays.

Drew & Lowell both have multiple years left on their contracts. They can't be moved.
Too many look at the fact that theres room on the books now, and not the fact that they have a ton of players who are due large contracts soon (Youk, Lester, Papelbon, Bay, Beckett most notably). That said, if they can sign some of those for 'Pedroia' type salaries, maybe taking a stab at Tex is doable.
Re: Should the Red Sox push hard for Texiera??
The way the economic downturn is affecting EVERYONE makes this hard. If the economy was in the same situation now that it was at it's most recent peak, then it's an easy decision, but the economy changes that.
I'd probably sign him. The Red Sox do have a lot of money coming off the books in the next several years, and it should, in part, coincide with when some of those guys are gonna be demanding the big bucks. Most of the guys you mention are just entering their arbitration years, and I'm not so sure about resigning Bay anyways.

They also have large contracts that are coming off the books i.e. J.D. Drew among others.
