Pirates sign two "pitchers" from India

Quote:
The two 20-year-old pitchers, neither of whom had picked up a baseball until earlier this year, signed free-agent contracts Monday with the Pirates. They are believed to be the first athletes from India to sign professional baseball contracts outside their country.
Singh and Patel came to the United States six months ago after being the top finishers in an Indian reality TV show called the Million Dollar Arm that drew about 30,000 contestants. The show sought to find athletes who could throw strikes at 85 miles per hour or faster.
While neither pitcher threw hard enough to earn the $1 million prize, Singh made $100,000 from the contest and Patel made $2,500, plus his trip to the United States.

Yeah, nice publicity stunt. I doubt anything actually comes from these guys.

Re: Pirates sign two "pitchers" from India
It would be awesome if it did
-
Re: Pirates sign two "pitchers" from India
I hope so to. It'd be awesome for those two guys.
-
Re: Pirates sign two "pitchers" from India
Who knows? With a little polish and some coaching, they might amount to something.
-
Re: Pirates sign two "pitchers" from India
Links broken.
Anything can happen but I bet this was a PR move to attract more international players to Pittsburgh. Kinda like how allot of Asian players sign with Seattle or Boston because of the largeness of the Asian community and how they have many players in the Minors and Majors.

Re: Pirates sign two "pitchers" from India
Apparently Singh is a lefty so hes more likely to make it.
-
Re: Pirates sign two "pitchers" from India
If they can't even throw 85MPH I don't see them doing anything. I wouldn't say I know an amazing amount about the game but with sports in general you can only teach so much. I'm sure there low speed could be because of pitching mechanics and technique but being better in that area will only help so much.

Re: Pirates sign two "pitchers" from India
They have a good segment on these two on Outside the Lines right now, probably will be replayed later on.

Re: Pirates sign two "pitchers" from India
Wait ? these guys WON ?? and have to play for the Pirates ??
-
Re: Pirates sign two "pitchers" from India
heh
I don't know anyone who would turn down a shot at the Big Show though, regardless of what team it's with.

Re: Pirates sign two "pitchers" from India
yeah, yeah...the pirates suck. I hear it all the time being a buccos fan. I was a little puzzled when I read about it but it makes sense. Publicity, a low-risk change and like ohms said these guys with some coaching could POSSIBLY hit the big show. It could also help draw some fans to the stadium for once. The saddest thing is that they had only 2,000 fans on average fewer than Tampa Bay...and I'm curious at how much Tampa Bay's rate sky rocketed over the last month.
Oh well...low risk signing and maybe something comes of it.

Re: Pirates sign two "pitchers" from India
well very few innings pitched, but Patel pitched pretty well. Hopefully this next season they both get more work obviously. I assume they are expected to stay in Rookie ball?

Re: Pirates sign two "pitchers" from India
I remember hearing about this around this time last year when it was said that they would be signed by the Pirates. I remember hearing that Patel had more abilities, and I really hope to see something flurish from this. We'll have to see what happens next year.

Re: Pirates sign two "pitchers" from India
Actually, Singh is the better of the two pitchers, not Patel.
-
Re: Pirates sign two "pitchers" from India
C.C.'s better than them both.
Oh wait, pitchers from India, not the Cleveland Indians.

Oh common! He sucks! ;) lol! I dunno it's been a year since I read the article. Wasn't Patel the #1 finalist in the competition?

I think so, but Singh is a lefty and was the more complete pitcher and better body.

Lefties always got a fighting chance even when the velocity isn't the best.

It's almost as if Singh and Patel are just like every other guy at spring training, just a couple of kids who grew up on the Little League fields dreaming of making it to the big leagues one day.
Last year, that wasn't the case.
Last year, Singh and Patel were those two guys from India.
The ones who won a reality show, came to the U.S. to work out and then were signed by the Pirates, believed to be the first Indian players ever to be picked up by a major-league team. The ones who'd never even heard of baseball, much less played it a year before reporting to spring training in Bradenton, Fla.
