Mike Mussina to retire

Re: Mike Mussina to retire
I would not have retired if I was him, but it is his choice, not mine
-
Re: Mike Mussina to retire
This isn't really surprising, though. It'll actually probably help the Yankees rotation as well, since they can plug someone else into his spot.

Re: Mike Mussina to retire
Well it's better to go out on top. 20 wins at this point, if he came back and tanked it would be a major letdown.
He'll be missed. I see the Yanks keep Andy P now though as they will want one Vet in the lineup.

Re: Mike Mussina to retire
He might be on the Orioles next season. I am from Baltimore and they have been talking about it the last few days. They could def. use him again.
-
Re: Mike Mussina to retire
Oh how I am going to miss when he is in the stretch delivery...funniest pitching quirk ever.

You mean his little dip down thing as he comes set? That's his way of checking the runner on first base before he delivers the pitch.

Did you miss the part where he said he's going to retire? :p

I know, but its funny to watch. And he is the only one that I have seen to do that. Why not just turn your head? :p

I believe Ian Kennedy does it too.

Re: Mike Mussina to retire
It's safer, probably. You have to be careful when turning your head because of the balk rule.

Re: Mike Mussina to retire
When the Yanks signed him, the Sox responded by signing Manny. So, who was the better sign?

Re: Mike Mussina to retire
Is it always the one-up game with you Red Sox fans?

Re: Mike Mussina to retire
Or... you know, 26 - 6 (7 if you count the Boston Americans) Yankees...
Or 0.567 W% vs. 0.516 W%, Yankees

Post of the year?
But, don't you know Ohms? Red Sox fans dismiss ANYTHING that happened before 2004

Yeah, we'll go with that.

Re: Mike Mussina to retire
*sigh* another thread degenerating into Red Sox fan bashing...
Mussina was an outstanding pitcher, both with the Orioles and the Yankees. He will be missed.

Agreed on both points.
I sure as hell won't miss facing him (for the most part :D).

To be fair, it usually starts off with a Red Sox fan saying something that can be construed as arrogant.
And, of course, when a Yankee fan says something like that, that thread degenerates into a Yankee fan bashing.
So, the ridiculousness goes both ways.

I'll give you that. How about this: no one say anything stupid anymore. Agreed? :D

That's easier said than done :D.

Re: Mike Mussina to retire
lol
It's just that the constant Yankees - Red Sox pissing contests are old.
The Angels did better then both teams this last year anyway, so :p

The only thing Hall of Famey about Mussina is his jerkishness. Of course, there are a lot of jerks in the Hallowed Hall, so I'm sure he'll fit right in, should he get the call. :D

since Mantle isn't walking through that door, I don't think I have anything to worry about.

Re: Mike Mussina to retire
Moose was one of the greatest pitchers of his era. I personally don't believe he's done......but if he is who cares hall or not. The guy was and is a very underappreciated talent.
-
Re: Mike Mussina to retire
The guy is 40 years old and a millionaire any times over. I'd say he was appreciated
-
Re: Mike Mussina to retire
If Mussina didn't play on a crappy team most of his career, he could have been at the level of Maddux. Mussina was never the same after he got hit in the face from a line drive....when he was with the Oiroles.

Sorry, but...no.

I don't see it. From 1997-2001, his ERA+ was between 125 and 142. His first real drop off came after 2003.

Re: Mike Mussina to retire
I'll do some research but I remember reading it somewhere like baseballhistory, baseballprospectus or thehardballtimes....thebook? I can't remember where I read it, it was a sight that analyzed mechanics as well as statistics.

Well, maybe he was never the same in terms of mechanics...I don't know about that...but he stayed the same for a few years after that in terms of performance..

Re: Mike Mussina to retire
I am looking at his stats right now, I don't really see anything but his stats did change in 1998-1999, but it looks like he recovered...
BTW: I never realized that Mussina won 20 games this year, for the first time in his career! I haven't really analyzed this years stats at all yet, which I will soon :)

He was better in 1999 than in 1998...

Have you paid attention at all to baseball articles? LOL. :p;) It was a pretty big story...I think.
