World Series Game 5 Discussion
Well, the series is 3-1, Phillies.
With Hamels and Kazmir pitching it should be a real good game.
Howard was a sleeping dog, but someone woke him up in game 3. He exploded in game 4. Expect more of the same tonight!
Pena & Longoria are NON-factors in the series so far.
What is everyone elses feelings on tonight's game?

Re: World Series Game 5 Discussion
I am feeling I under estimated the Phillies :p
Granted the Rays have NOT played like they did all year but still... WOW.
The one mistake I think the Phillies made was not starting Hamels last night. I KNOW Blanton did fine but if for some reason it goes to 7 games which it still might... Hamels would not start. That to me is unfortunate

He'd have been going on short rest. It wasn't a must-win game, so it would've been pretty silly to risk using a less effective Hamels.

Re: World Series Game 5 Discussion
Agreed. I underestimated the Phillies too. I knew they had the bats, but the pitching is becoming super impressive. What is the record for the oldest pitcher to win a WS game?

I'm 95% sure it's now Moyer.

Re: World Series Game 5 Discussion
Yes because I THINK randy Johnson had it before

Heh, he's referring to the what are you thinking thread where he commented about how ESPN was saying that, and I replied with exactly that, "Ya think?" lol

Re: World Series Game 5 Discussion
I picked the Phils all the way, so I won't be wrong

Re: World Series Game 5 Discussion
Some pre-game notes, particularly regarding the Tampa Bay bullpen usage and Ryan Howard's platoon split.

Moyer didn't win a World Series game. He was set up for the win before th bullpen blew the lead so he got a no-decision.
-
Re: World Series Game 5 Discussion
Buck just said "If your the Rays, how do you turn this thing around?" WELL, YOU WIN, DUHH!

I hate it when people criticize every single thing announcers make a mistake on.
If you were up there, you'd probably make even more mistakes. And he didn't even make a mistake, he obviously meant... what do the Rays have to work on to beat the Phillies and turn this thing around?...

Yeah, that was a pretty odd thing to "pick a fight" with.
That being said, Buck and McCarver say some dumb and flat-out wrong things rather often.

Example: McCarver Once said "A sinker and a slider are two different pitches". He did not explain how they are different, merely stated the obvious

Re: World Series Game 5 Discussion
I particularly love Fox's "Keys to the Game" that they do every game.
For Tampa Bay -
Rise from the ashes, need a big hit early
For Philadelphia-
Finish the deal, not let Tampa Bay up
This is par for the course for the "Keys to the Game" segment - just different ways of saying "Win." The only thing there that isn't a synonym for "Win" is "Need a big hit early."
Fox should just drop the Keys to the Game thing, or fix it. I think everybody understand that a "key to the game" is to win.

Re: World Series Game 5 Discussion
Ryan Howard can't hit lefties. He didn't "rediscover the home run ball." He's been given an inordinate amount of left-handed pitchers in the playoffs because teams know that he sucks against lefties, and that he ran into a pitch by a lefty last night doesn't change that. Howard wasn't "slumping" in the postseason. His weakness was being exploited.

I don't think Buckarver knows what a lefty is, Houston....

Re: World Series Game 5 Discussion
DAMMIT.
Now I'm going out. Hopefully the Rays keep this close and come back...:(

Re: World Series Game 5 Discussion
Scott Kazmir needs to calm down. Buck/McCarver says Kazmir starts out wild and then calms down but who knows.

What happened? How did it get to be 2-0?

Re: World Series Game 5 Discussion
My son was at Game Three and is at tonight's game as well.
Hoping for his sake that he gets to see his Phils clinch it tonight.

Re: World Series Game 5 Discussion
My favorite McCarver piece "That pitch shows Wheeler's strength as a pitcher...and that is the ability to get guys out."
.....
....
Yes. Yes it is.

Re: World Series Game 5 Discussion
McCarver: "It really helps to throw Strike 1"

Re: World Series Game 5 Discussion
My pet peeve strikes again. Pena should've been on third base on that fly ball. And with one out, that could've been huge. It doesn't matter that it turned out okay this time, I just get so damn tired of these guys making millions to play a game, and they are only asked to really hustle a few times a day. That's just not too much to ask. If Pena had been stranded at second and the Rays lost the game by one, maybe over the winter more would've been made of it. I'm almost sad it didn't work out that way, cause seeing these guys jog and loaf when they're paid to play is just really old. And I swear, from someone whose followed the game since the 60's, it just wasn't as prevalent then.

No worries now. Longoria drove him in so it doesn't matter that he wasn't smart on the bases.
