I'm sure that every player has a clause in their contract about not playing baseball for any other team or in any other situation. And even without that, they would be required to be at spring training during the time period of the WBC - so they need to alter the terms of the contract to play. It would be interesting if a player stated that their next contract would specifically include a release to play in the WBC. Would their contract value actually change?Quote:

totally agree, I've never understood why people think players should have to be loyal to teams. Face it, no matter how much you're loved by the fans if you're getting in to your 30's and figure to start declining and there's the next big thing behind you in the minors your team won't hesitate to trade you or let you go during the off-season. That doesn't seem fair to me that the player must have 100% loyalty, but the club can do whatever they want and loyalty never gets questioned.Quote:

This is the same team that has no problem with uprooting a player's family by trading him to another team on a moment's notice because they need somebody who fits the roster's needs more. If they asked a player's loyalty, I'd hope that they would give it in return in that scenario, but that's not how it works. It's a business. Baseball has always been a business and always will be, and "loyalty" is not required in business relationships. Both sides can co-exist and get along fine without having to be loyal to one another.
If you do contract work for an employer, and get hurt doing something else, then the first thing that will happen is that your employer will stop paying you. And that is what the baseball players are afraid of - if they get hurt at the WBC they won't get paid. I haven't yet heard an owner say that a player couldn't play - Vernon Wells was just reported to be unable to play for the US because he couldn't get insurance due to spending too much time on the DL last year. This is an issue about whether owners are liable for the contract if a player gets hurt - it isn't a moral issue.Quote:

Rosters announced today, officially.
The Dominican Republic's infield is sick. There's gonna be some damn good players left on the bench. A-Rod and Adrian Beltre at 3B. David Ortiz at 1B. Hanley Ramires, Jose Reyes and Miguel Tejeda at SS. Robinson Cano at 2B. Willie Aybar in there as well.
Without looking at the rest of the rosters...I can't imagine an infield that good on any other roster.
I have to say I'm most excited to see what Pedro can do. I really hope he has at least one strong outing.
How about David Wright, Jose Reyes, Dustin Pedroia, Kevin Youkilis, Derek Jeter, Chipper Jones, and Mark DeRosa? Not quite as good because ARod and Hanley are such studs... but pretty damn close.Quote:

The infield is very good and Chipper should be a great DH, but yeah that starting rotation is a huge question mark outside of Peavy and Oswalt. I also wonder why Hawpe gets the nod over Granderson and Jeter over Rollins.Quote:

Also, no, it's not the best America could offer. There's many players that opt not to play, either by their own accord or at the request of their team. Whoever wrote that article doesn't seem to grasp that.
Sadly that site doesn't change their starting rotation, but their outfield looks better overall. They don't have Sizemore, but they got Victorino and Granderson likely starting and Adam Dunn coming off the bench to pinch hit would be awesome.Quote:
