Should the Red Sox Start Beckett Tonight?
Game 6. You lose, you go home.
Beckett has been huge in the playoffs his whole career.
He's been terrible this year. He's been injured. His velocity is down.
Would you start him in this game?
-
Re: Should the Red Sox Start Beckett Tonight?
If they put Lester in, then they would need Beckett in game 7. That's an even bigger spot for him, so no.
-
Re: Should the Red Sox Start Beckett Tonight?
I guess it comes down to one question...if not Beckett, who?
-
Re: Should the Red Sox Start Beckett Tonight?
Exactly. If Beckett isn't pitching who would the Red Sox put out there? Wakefield? No way.
If Beckett can find his amazing stuff like he usually does in the playoffs we could see an amazing pitchers duel and an amazing end to this series over the next two days.

You HAVE to win game 6 before game 7...
-
Re: Should the Red Sox Start Beckett Tonight?
I guess it dosen't really matter you have to win one game with Beckett and one with Lester, the only way you may swap them is if you think Lester can give you a better outing and beat Shields 2-1 or 1-0 and hope you can get to Garza for 5 or 6 runs if Beckett stuggles a bit.

You could put Lester tonight, and piece it together for game 7...Or Give Beck the extra rest

Yeah...my plan was to start Lester (Who btw, Francona says is 'tired'. Which tells me because of all the extra work compared to last year, that he's hit a wall....which really, really sucks.) and then do starter by commitee for game 7. Papelbon, Masterson, then hope the Sox have a good lead.

Re: Should the Red Sox Start Beckett Tonight?
beckett is going to do the same thing that schilling did in '04(without the bloody sock :p)

Re: Should the Red Sox Start Beckett Tonight?
I wanted to post this, I didn't write it. It was posted on the Sons of Sam Horn message board by a poster named Jose Melendez, who has been posting what he calls, "Keys to the Game" for quite sometime. I will tell you that this is the best piece of writing I have seen in a while. It gave me chills. I hope all you Red Sox fans out there enjoy it!
People do not like you. And by all reports, this is with good reason. You are, they say, not a pleasant fellow. You lack social graces. You do not tell amusing anecdotes. In fact, you are kind of a dick. You do not bring comfort to the afflicted, or joy to the sad. You do not nurture, and you do not nourish. All you can do, all you are good for is throwing a horsehide on the corners at frightening velocity.
So do it already. Hit the corners. Snap off the curve.
Pitch, you *******. Pitch.
If you cannot pitch, then you are not. That is not a typo, there is not a noun missing from the end. A drill that cannot drill is not, and a pitcher who cannot pitch is not. Absent the ability to thrown strikes, to make hitters swing and miss, you are the null set, a void, utter nothing.
So when you take the mound tonight, do not do.
Be.
You are a pitcher.
And all a pitcher does it pitch.
-
Re: Should the Red Sox Start Beckett Tonight?
Beckett all the way. The only thing about your question is the hurt factor. Beckett and Francona keep saying over and over that he is NOT hurt. Saying that he is is speculating on your part.
-
Re: Should the Red Sox Start Beckett Tonight?
I'd rather have a wildcard like Beckett going Game 6 than Game 7, if they were to win tonight. Because if Beckett were to win the game and pitch well tonight, that's a huge boost for the team in so many ways, and then you have more of a "sure thing" going for Game 7.

They shut him down in August because he WAS hurt then

Re: Should the Red Sox Start Beckett Tonight?

uhhh....what? I like Beckett. And I found his bit about how his ex got to see the game for free amusing. And I've seen him sign for kids and in Tampa he gave his 'game warm-up ball' to a kid.

I think the point was that Beckett needs to go out and do what he does best, and do it well, and that is pitch.
-
Re: Should the Red Sox Start Beckett Tonight?
That's I think exactly what the writer meant. What makes Josh Beckett great is he has a mean streak, and uses it when he pitches. I don't care whether people like him, as long as he goes out and is throwing it 95 with a killer curve. I think tonight we will see that pissod off Beckett that has been so great, at least that's what I have convinced myself!

Re: Should the Red Sox Start Beckett Tonight?
Can anyone else see the gae? I'm just getting generic black comedy shows.

Re: Should the Red Sox Start Beckett Tonight?
That was a ballsy five innings from Mr. Beckett. I think Jon will come through strong tomorrow! At least, that is what I think after a 12 pack of Blue Moon, and listening to Dirty Water!

These kind of fans make me sick. Reminds me of when I was in 7th or 8th grade and not realizing the teachers were actually humans and had life outside the small box we called a classroom.
Its OK to be excited about the teams you root for, but to go to this extreme shows how childish and moronic (if thats a word) some people are.

Re: Should the Red Sox Start Beckett Tonight?
I don't think the Rays have a chance in hell tonight. Not after losing game five the way they did and losing last night, I think it's over for them.

Sox have had a habit of letting the Rays off the mat this year...it could go either way. Hopefully it wont be off a grandslam in the bottom of the ninth or a Pedroia 'Buckner' or some similar crushing moment.
On the other hand in 2004 Sox won game six 4-2 and game seven going away...that's be nice.:)

how can you say that the way this pitcher sonnastine shut down the sox earlier inthe series??? this is by no means a slam dunk....sox better not walk in there thinking momentum alone will get them the carrot.

That's true. But the Rays are a very, very young team and you've gotta wonder what their psyche is right now. I usually think the experience vs. inexperience thing is pretty stupid and basically a myth, but it's gotta come into play somewhat here. Plus their bullpen has struggled and they couldn't hit $hit off a less-than-stellar Beckett last night, so what are they gonna do against Lester?

Sonnanstine isn't pitching, it's Garza. At least that's what they said on FOX last night.

Their pen doesn't bat.....
Win maybe ? I think age & experience mean "zilch" tonight... TBD & BOS chances are 50/50
Personally I think this is gonna be a game 2 re-make (high scoring- alternate leads) I simply hope that Tito has learned to IBB Upton!

You misinterpreted me. I meant that their pen has struggled and their offense couldn't hit a thing last night.

I was JOKING my friend ;)
I do THINK that Lester-Garza will be a BULLPEN match up rather than a SP battle.Rays have a "hot" 3-5 whilst the Sox WHO knows ? (see Tek & Papi last night).
My only fear is an extra inning game & the choice is Byrd or Timlin ...*shudders at the thought*

To get to Carlos Pena, owner of a .375/.487/.688 line this postseason, followed by Evan Longoria, who has 6 hits, all for extra bases, this series? That'd be a pretty poor move.

byrd, byrd, byrd, byrd is the word :p

Re: Should the Red Sox Start Beckett Tonight?
I think the Red Sox should give Coco Crisp the start today... so the Rays will score like 27 runs in the 1st inning :D
