Exactly! That's the type of trade that would get you the "I just figured out something. You're clinically insane, aren't you?" response.

There is a "catch" though. It isn't CERTAIN you get to keep Peavy 4/5 years. He will have the right after the 09 season to "opt out" of the contract & test the FA market IF HE WANTS,due to being traded in the midst of a multi-year contract (don(t know his agent but if it is the Hendricks Bros or Boras I would be pushing him to GO ANYWHERE for 1 season ;) ).
So he has a Second great "leverage" position which he could use to re-negotiate his "club" friendly deal into a more real market price.
I don't think the Cardinals have the young pitching to be serious players for Peavy.
Remember that Brett Wallace in untradeable & they (the Friars') dont need ANOTHER 3B prospect (heck THEY traded Freese to the Cardinals in the first place - showing how "hot" they were on him ;) ) - Kennedy ? 4 million for a .280/.321 /.372 PLAYER who lost his job .... & Mather 26 year old back up ....* shudders*
Only Rasmus is worth even consideration & his stock dropped (slightly) in 2008 due to issues (injury) & a .251 BA at AAA.
That is the WHOLE point every one else in on the "Peavy stakes" knows that THEY will have to give the Padres at least 1 STUD,cheap SP back plus multiple prospects.
We are in the Dan Haren trade era NOT the Tim Hudson era :p
From your Posts you want to get a 28 year old CY Young pitcher who is signed 30% under market rate for almost nothing & HAS a career ERA+ of 121 - aint gonna happen,Towers is to smart & KNOWS that he has a player who is in DEMAND by at least 10+ teams!
Exactly UNLESS Wainwright is added in - reasonable contract ( 09:$2.6M, 10:$4.65M, 11:$6.5M, 12:$9M club option, 13:$12M club option) till 2012 & definitely what the Padres are looking for !
Also it spreads that famous "opt out" risk BOTH ways.......
as I said earlier the Rays HAVE been agressive in locking up young players (see Shields/Kazmir/Longoria deals) & Peavy is UNDER market value, which Rosenthal forgets here. The addition of Peavy & the development of Price means that Sonnanstine becomes superfluous & already is "peaked" out (or vety close).Quote:
But Peavy likely would waive his no-trade clause for the right AL team.
Rays. The addition of Peavy would be ideal for a rotation that already includes James Shields, Scott Kazmir, David Price and Andy Sonnanstine. Tampa-St. Pete is relatively close to Alabama, and an Edwin Jackson-Reid Brignac-Jeff Niemann package might entice the Padres. The Rays, however, are wary of taking on significant payroll while parting with top young players.
If,& it is a BIG IF,the Rays are interested then a Jackson-Brignac-Sonnanstine package as a base would SUIT the Padres (considering that they have lost from their '08 Opening Day roster Maddux,Wolf,Tomko) + Peavy.
09 Pitching NOW is Peavy,Young,Baek,& then a choice of Banks/Geer/LeBlanc
09 if Peavy is dealt to Rays - Young,Sonnanstine,Baek,Jackson + #5 open.......
Interesting,NO ?
Rosenthal just forgets the ALCS MVP Matt Garza.Quote:

Pitching is not what the Rays need. Frankly, I don't see them having any real interest.
DID I say it was a "priority" ? No,I said they had the "right" ammo (ie players) to swing a deal & added that IMO is was a good deal because of the players involved.
You said that Peavy WOULDNT play for an AL team, full stop.....;)
BTW: I would love the Red Sox to get in on the deal because:
1) Peavy is that good IMO & even if they do pick up the 2013 option would be at market price (or below) &
2) it would stop the OTHER AL East teams getting him.
As always the question would be cost - & IMO they shouldn't be using Bucholz or Bowden in ANY deal if Lowrie & Ellsbury are the base.
Never said you did.
They have the ammo, sure, but I'm just saying, I don't think they should put their resources into it.Quote:

No I didn't.Quote:

thats really the only think we need. we need 2 starters and a CF. other than that we are fine. what we get from mccann makes up for the power we lose at 1B.
I would have liked or us to have kept salty and then we could move mccann to 1B now and trade kochman for a CF.
we have the infield set... francouer will either be traded or the RF, we have blanco/diaz in LF we need a CF... im not sure what all these holes people are taling about... the reason we sucked was NOT hitting it was pitching
I know what I said. I didn't say that he WON'T. I said that he doesn't want to. He did originally say that he wouldn't, but has since made it more "gray."

At season's end, Peavy said he would not accept a trade to the American League. Asked recently if that is still true, Peavy said he didn't “want to get into any speculation” on trade scenarios.
His agent, Barry Axelrod, acknowledged that the American League isn't Peavy's first choice.
“Jake has a strong preference to stay in the National League,” Axelrod said. “It is hypothetical, but Jake, by any measure, has had a great deal of success in the National League. He has a comfort level with knowing how to approach hitters here.”
From the cards website
I read that Jake Peavy is in play and he would waive his no-trade clause to certain National League cities, St. Louis being one of them. Any chance ownership would open the purse strings and go after him? If so, what are the chances the Cards could sign him? Also, who would the Padres want -- or more importantly, who would the Cards be willing to offer?
-- Mike S., Columbia, Mo.
There have been a lot of Peavy trade talks, and rumors say that the Cardinals are on his list of desired destinations. The Padres are apparently looking for two pitching prospects and a near Major League-ready center fielder. I've always been against trading Colby Rasmus, but Peavy's no ordinary pitcher, and he's under contract well below market value for the next four or five years, I believe. Do you think the Cardinals will try to acquire him?
-- Ethan L., Chesterfield, Mo.
I have heard the rumors about the Cardinals possibly trading for Peavy and Khalil Greene. I was curious what you think the chance is that the Cards make the move, and who would the Padres be looking for in a deal like this?
-- Eric H., Columbia, Mo.
First, it's not a matter of signing him, and that's a huge part of the appeal of Peavy. He's signed through 2012, with a large club option for '13. He would have to waive his no-trade clause, but according to many outlets, he would do so in order to come to certain cities -- including St. Louis.
The Cardinals have no choice but to kick the tires and find out exactly what it's going to take. Any deal likely starts with Rasmus, and likely would include other players as well -- perhaps a starter like Jess Todd and a reliever like Jason Motte. I'm not saying those guys have necessarily been discussed, but that's the kind of package you're looking at. It's a lot.
Then there's Greene, who is an interesting factor in the whole deal. If the Padres are looking to unload him, it might help St. Louis -- since the Cardinals don't have a shortstop for 2009, and since before '08 Greene was a pretty good player -- especially in the field.
I am sorry but you keep coming back to the same deal ie Rasmus/Todd & Motte.THAT is pure "BS" - Towers doesn't want or need RPs or even a 23 year old SP with 4 games above AA & a 3.97 ERA in AAA!
He wants at LEAST 1 SP ready to play now + a SS or CF AAA level+ & 2 prospects graded B+ or above (ie LaPorta level)

Jake Peavy has the power to block the Padres' efforts to trade him with the no-trade clause in his contract. For now, he is playing along, and has presented San Diego some guidelines. He'd prefer a National League team to an American League team because the man likes to hit and run the bases. He'd prefer to play for the Houston Astros, or the Atlanta Braves, or the Dodgers or the Cubs or the St. Louis Cardinals. He'll listen if the Padres have other ideas, such as dealing him to the Yankees.
hmmm.... He lieks the braves... if only we had the pieces to give up :) if we could just reverse the texeria trade and go back to before we traded for him :p... we gave up a lot and it would help us in this trade :p
The N.Y. Post says the deal would be for Hanson, Schafer and either Escobar or Johnson.
The executives spoken to say they anticipate a Braves package being built around pitcher Tommy Hanson and outfielder Jordan Schafer, who both peaked at Double-A last year, plus a middle infielder, either shortstop Yunel Escobar or second baseman Kelly Johnson.
Another AL GM said, "That is really a good deal if San Diego can make it."
If the Braves get Peavy, I think this is what the deal would look like:
Braves: Peavy, Greene
Padres: Hanson, Schafer, Escobar, lower level pitching prospect
or
Braves: Peavy
Padres: Hanson, Schafer, Johnson, lower level pitching prospect
If I'm Frank Wren, I still wouldn't make that deal. We need to rebuild.
...and Manny finished the season on the Marlins, right?
:)
Houston, there is no way we deal Jurrjens unless we are talking a huge blockbuster with either Gonzalez or Young coming back with Peavy as well (with us sending over more prospects).
In other words, not gonna happen.
Pitching is one of our weak areas for 2009, so there is no way we deal a pitcher that was our de facto ace last year.
:P
Well, there are multiple other sources that put the price at our top pitching prospect (Hanson), a CF prospect (Schafer, Hernandez) plus a middle infielder (Lillibridge, Escobar, Johnson), plus some lower pitching prospects.
Now way does Wren include both Heyward and Hanson in the same package, nor will he include Jurrjens.
I think he will most likely give the Padres two offers, much like Boston was purported to have done in the Santana saga, one with Hanson and one with Heyward.
Hopefully we just keep our prospects and sign a few FA (Lowe, Burnett, Sheets) add a power outfield bat (Dunn, Burrell) and sit back and wait to really contend in 2010 or 2011.
wrenn has already been told he has 40 million to "play" with this year look here
I'd do it so fast their head would spin. I dont like givin up pitching especialy our young stud... but I can live without schafer and johnson is expendable due to Prado.
I DON'T do the one with escobar tho... We have a replacement for Johnson, not for Escobar. If we have to take Greene, we pay 1/2 the contract and flip him somewhere for a longshot pitching prospect. you never know
GM reiterates Braves won't part with prospects, even for Peavy

"From our perspective we still feel the same and we are looking to the future when that next wave of talent I spoke of arrives in Atlanta," Wren said in an e-mail to The Associated Press.
*sigh*
it was a nice hope while it lasted
Lets just remember that Kyle Davies and Chuck James and Mcbride were all untouchables and the next greatest thing too at one point
Here is your TOP 20
Quote:
1) Jason Heyward, OF, Grade A-: A personal favorite, though he actually hit fewer homers than expected. Broad base of skills.
2) Frederick Freeman, 1B, Grade B+: Debating whether or not to move him up to A-. Not as broad a skill base as Heyward, but power and youth stand out.
3) Thomas Hanson, RHP, Grade B+: Looks good to me, though will need some Triple-A to put on the finishing touches. Number Two starter ceiling.
4) Jordan Schafer, OF, Grade B+: I should have put him on the Rotowire Top 100 list. Will be in the 50/50 for the book. Power, speed, defense, OBP, and played well without the juice.
5) Tyler Flowers, C, Grade B: Love the power and walks, main question is glove.
6) Cole Rohrbough, LHP, Grade B: Excellent ceiling. I cannot prove why objectively, but I worry a bit about his arm. Needs sharper command too.
7) Craig Kimbrel, RHP, Grade B: I hesitate to grade relief prospects this highly, but I can’t ignore his early dominance.
8) Gorkys Hernandez, OF, Grade B-: Would like to see more power, other skills coming along.
9) Kris Medlen, RHP, Grade B-: Am I overrating him? Looks like he could be a really good swingman.
10) Jeff Locke, LHP, Grade B-: I’ve liked him since he was in high school. Like Rohrbough, worry some about injuries.
11) Randall Delgado, RHP, Grade B-: Needs better command, but a high ceiling guy.
12) Brett DeVall, LHP, Grade B-: A long way away, but a high ceiling.
13) Zeke Spruill, RHP, Grade B-: Like DeVall, a long way off, but fits into organization philosophy perfectly.
14) Brandon Hicks, SS, Grade C+: Love the power, walks, speed, defense. Hate the strikeouts.
15) Eric Campbell, 3B, Grade C+: If his head is on straight, could surprise people in ’09.
16) James Parr, RHP, Grade C+: Fourth/fifth starter type.
17) J.J. Hoover, RHP, Grade C+: Sleeper call on a junior college guy that I love. Hard-thrower with improving command.
18) Kala Ka’aihue, 1B, Grade C+: Similar to his brother Kila though I don’t think he will perform quite as well in ’09 as his brother did in ’08.
19) David Francis, RHP, Grade C+: Sleeper pick.
20) Edgar Osuna, LHP, Grade C+: Sleeper pick, great K/BB ratio.
I wouldn't read too much into that. Wren seems like a pretty smart guy to me (remember who his boss was) and I believe he is simply posturing, making a big deal to the media about how certain guys are untouchable, so when Wren finally "gives in" and includes one in an offer, it seems like a bigger deal that it really is.
Like you posted earlier, we have about $40 MM to use, so why not turn to FA instead of giving up our prospects? If they don't pan out, that's okay because we still the prospects to replace them (in theory), but if for some reason (elbow) Peavy is hurt, we lost a huge chuck of our future that could ultimately cripple us on down the road.
I just have a bad feeling that if we trade for Peavy, sometime in April the words "Jake Peavy" and "Dr. James Andrews" will be used in the same headline.
Cubs jump into Peavy trade talks, eye three-team deal
i dont like escobar leaving BUT if they would do Escobar, Hernandez,Reyes, and Locke... id sign it now and dont give the cubs time to make a REALLY good 3 way tradeQuote:
The Braves and Padres have settled on two pieces of the package that Atlanta would send to San Diego -- shortstop Yunel Escobar and outfield prospect Gorkys Hernandez. The Braves likely would include one of two young pitchers, either Charlie Morton or Jo-Jo Reyes. The two sides are at odds over the other pieces in the deal; the Padres are known to have interest in young pitcher Jeffrey Locke.
haha Olney is so late on this...the Cubs have been in it for weeks
they have been in on it but I think they jsut stared looking into a 3 way deal
dunn and burrel??? and where are burnett coming from? ot is this the yanks you are talking about
because i dont see the braves ater sheets or burnett really. maybe but I dont know if they will take another changce on players that get hurt
oh it was someone else lol
I dont wnt dunn OR burrell
send me andruw with 16 mil in cash and its a deal... Ill send the papers over now :p
I want lowe, peavy, griffey, and unfortunatly it looks like w emay need to go after furcal since they will trade escobar
You're better off with Dunn or Burrell than Griffey, defensively none of them are too good, and griffey is by far the biggest injury risk
(and really Jones ... you'd even with the money tou'd pay 2m for a guy that bats 200?)
If the quote of 40m to play with accurate you have to consdier Smoltz is about 10 of that, reserve about, 5-6 for depth bench players and you have the ability to sign 2 quality guys, One will almost have to be a pitcher, even if they trade for peavy. Grifffey may be a low cost option, but i doubt an NL team will take the risk of making play the field and hope to get 120 game out of him.
smolts wint be anywhere NEAR 10 million...I will be surprosed if they offer more than 8. the thing is we need a CF not a LF dunn could play 1st and find out if cochman can play LF... but that leaves us yet again with a void in CF. Francouer can play there but hten RF is open... its not a good idea for burrell OR dunn in my opinion
