Re: Braves Could Land Peavy
The Astros have a snowball's chance in hell. They have no farm system.

Yes Peavy has full no trade & YES he has a "preference for the NL" but he also wants (IMO) to win a WS &/or be on a perennial Playoff team & the 4 AL East teams fill that Criteria.
Just a hypo example of what I am concluding - would he sign for the Giants or the Red Sox ? See what I mean ....
Re: Braves Could Land Peavy
I say St. Louis should offer Rasmus, Wallace or Freese, Mather, Adam Kennedy and a top pitching prospect for Greene and Peavy
Cards need both a shortstop and another steady arm.
Peavy said St. Louis was a possibility (apparently)
San Diego wants to part with Greene
There is no room for Rasmus really
This provides plenty of depth and a good fit for San Diego, and they don't have much of a future at third right now or in center, Wallace and Rasmus both offer that.

I think that would barely be enough to acquire Peavy alone.
Re: Braves Could Land Peavy
The Padres are also looking for pitching as their main priority in any trade for Peavy.
Re: Braves Could Land Peavy
I would be willing to part w Brad Thompson, Adam Ottavino and Jason Motte to complete it

First off WALLACE cannot be traded as he is a 2008 draftee (1 year no trade rule) .Rasmus is St Louis' CF of the future (even maybe by 2009 with Ankiel moving to LF) & well the rest are C+ prospects at best & NO WAY will the Friars take KENNEDY who is 2/3 years past his "sell by date".
In essence that deal just is too too LOW compared to other systems.;)
You need to look at WHAT the Friars need FOR A TRADE to work & that is :
1° Cheap MLB ready SPs eg Bucholz/Price/Hughes level
2° SS/2B with UPSIDE eg Brignac/Lowrie/
3° OF with UPSIDE - CF if possible - Rasmus/Heyward/Ellsbury/Snider
Cardinals ONLY have 1 of those "need" fillers in Rasmus BUT they have no upside SPs unless they would be willing to deal Wainwright + Garcia/Mortensen & Perez .Even then they would be offering less than the Rays deal outlined above .

Yeah, and San Diego would want players to expedite their rebuilding process. Unless a package blows Kevin Towers away, they don't HAVE to trade Peavy. He's under contract for the next FOUR YEARS (five if they pick up the 2013 option) at an average annual salary of $15.75 million. That alone drives the asking price way, way, WAY up, especially since he's already signed for less money than C.C. Sabathia is going to get.
Re: Braves Could Land Peavy
I doubt Peavy would agree to go to Tampa

Exactly! That's the type of trade that would get you the "I just figured out something. You're clinically insane, aren't you?" response.

There is a "catch" though. It isn't CERTAIN you get to keep Peavy 4/5 years. He will have the right after the 09 season to "opt out" of the contract & test the FA market IF HE WANTS,due to being traded in the midst of a multi-year contract (don(t know his agent but if it is the Hendricks Bros or Boras I would be pushing him to GO ANYWHERE for 1 season ;) ).
So he has a Second great "leverage" position which he could use to re-negotiate his "club" friendly deal into a more real market price.
Re: Braves Could Land Peavy
I am assuming that Peavy will only agree to be traded knowing that his final option year would be picked up before the trade.
Well then what do you guys think St. Louis would have to offer to get Greene and Peavy?

Well, that's a good start, although the Padres would probably want young pitching as the highlight of the package. No matter what, if a team wants Peavy, they're going to have to take a hit to their farm system.

Actually THAT final year he DOES NOT WANT to be picked up LOL - even at today's market it is like 5 million below his value & that is for an option 4 year +!
