I will admit, one of the best things I saw/heard was during the 1st game between LA and the Cubs. Harold Reynolds talked about the fact that as Ramirez's new agent, Boros wouldnt make a dime if he stayed in Boston under an option. Finally, announcers are starting to talk the about the problem with agents. Just 2 years ago, they were so afraid to touch this subject. Cool.
Quite true. Just like it was hardly a coincidence that once Terrell Owens hooked up with Drew Rosenhaus his contract became a problem, it's not surprising that now that Manny's new agent needs to make a commission, Manny starts making noise about wanting a whole new deal.Quote:

My personal laugh as a Yanks fan is the new stadium. It is a stadium paid by the city of NY, but w/o a cost to tax payers. Hmm. How does that work. Plus, they want a 20-25% increase in tickets. Now the econ. crisis.
Baseball, at least on the Yanks end is becoming a financial joke and the transparency the new stadium has brought is making it worse. Sure, suckers will still pay thousands, but it takes a while for NYers to understand the word municipal and tax based.
Simmons on ESPN cover this angle, and was really the only person to lay any blame on Boras for this

I used to think that Boros was the problem. Man was I wrong. Boros exists because of stupid owners and unions. If he died today, someone else would fill his place. Still would be cool to strap on apb and send him cave diving in Pakistan.

Well yes its a two-way street, maybe someone would take his place and do the same things, but does that make some of the things he does OK ?
Especially looking at the Alverez situation, Boras was tried to pull a fast one while gambling with Alverez's future.
Just because "someone else would do the same thing" does not make it right, or remove any blame from him.
The Manny situation he was obviously trying to make a dime. But the Alvarez situation, and similarly the Matsuzaka one, he was trying to make a point.
Why is Boras a problem? He works for the players to get as much money as they can. And if he wasn't working in the best interests of the players he wouldn't have a job. I think he takes a lot of crap that should fall to the player - it is very easy for the player to pretend that he doesn't understand anything and that all decisions surrounding their career are made by Boras. But they aren't. Or at least if they are then that is the player's fault and not his. If Manny ends up making less out of this situation then he would have staying in Boston then he made a mistake. Boras didn't make a mistake - Manny did. Boras isn't ruining baseball - he isn't even a problem. The owners have no one other than themselves to blame if they pay people too much money. And if the players prefer to stay with a single team out of loyalty for less money then they have the power to do it. The fact that they don't care what team they play for is not the result of Scott Boras. As I said, he just works for the players and does the best he can to get what they want - if he didn't he wouldn't have a job.
I do agree that, in the end, we are too quick as sports fans to blame the agent and ignore the fact that THE PLAYER makes the final decisions. While Boras was no doubt pushing Manny to think about shooting for free agency and a new deal (that he'd take his commission from), in the end, it's Manny's call to start whining about money.

For the really anti-Boras group, the only way to solve the "problem" here is to get rid of Free Agency... which isn't happening. And shouldn't.
And part of the agent's job is to shield the player from the bad press that comes with opting out. If Boras can get people to say that this is his fault then that might be almost as important as getting Manny more money. Seems to be doing his job quite well.
