Comeback players of the year....
Cliff Lee in the AL- Perfect choice, no question
Brad Lidge in the NL- Great year, but what the hell is he coming back from? He's always been great...

metsguy234,
Love the signature. When did you update that? On Sunday after the Mets choked again?

Wasn't a choke... it was a comeback that fell short...
You just proved that all Phillie fans are tremendous douchebags

Uh, huh. Well, we can understand just missing the playoffs, we just don't whine like I have been hearing coming from your fans.
And when Obama loses, I am sure people will cry too.

When McCain loses, I know all of those Republicans will probably be so, so upset...

Okay, enough of us flaming one another. We agree to disagree.
Besides, arguing about baseball is more fun! :D

Yap, yap, yap. Let's get back on topic.
I agree with Met's fan, Lidge had a great year, but he was pretty good last year. So how does that qualify as a comeback player of the year? Because he was traded?

Re: Comeback players of the year....
Year Team W L ERA G GS CG SHO SV SVO IP H R ER HR BB SO
2005 HOU 4 4 2.29 70 0 0 0 42 46 70.2 58 21 18 5 23 103
2006 HOU 1 5 5.28 78 0 0 0 32 38 75.0 69 47 44 10 36 104
2007 HOU 5 3 3.36 66 0 0 0 19 27 67.0 54 29 25 9 30 88
It'd actually be more justified for him to win the award last year... when he went from a 5.28 ERA to a 3.36 ERA...
-
Re: Comeback players of the year....
Yes, maybe last year, but not this year. In the AL, it is Cliff, and the NL, Jorge Cantu.

Re: Comeback players of the year....
I'm gonna just throw this out there, I have been to shea stadium many times, and not the new phillies park, but the old one many times (can't remember the name) back when dykstra, kruk etc played. And the fans were absolutely terrible at both places. Rude, annoying, obnoxious. Just terrible examples of how baseball fans should act. So this little argument you two are having on here just goes to show how bad you can be. I don't know a single cards fan that would treat a cub fan this way, and vice versa, and we have an actual rivalry. Grow up and be better fans of the game

I've actually heard that most people consider Mets fans to be friendlier then Phillies fans to be friendly then Yankees fans

Um, if you noticed, I already addressed this. Enough already!

Re: Comeback players of the year....
going on...comeback player of the year. It would be hard to say lee wouldn't get this award. But does Hamilton's year qualify?
and in the NL. I have a few players I like the idea of the award going to...and I don't think Lidge is one of them. He has always been pretty damn good. I would probably have to go with a few people, Lohse, Delgado, Brian Giles should get some consideration, and brian McCann

Actually, when the Mets fans are in town, it is a great time, we bash and trash one another, but at the end of the game it is all respect.
We love to hate the Mets and their fans! And I am sure it is vice-versa. It is all good and nothing ill-meant about it.

I don't think so. As I said in another thread, the award's definition is for a player who has "re-emerged." Hamilton, simply put, has emerged.
Which begs the question - How the hell did Brad Lidge win this award? It's not "award for the player who had an okay season last year, but not as good as he usually has, and then returns to his previous level." It's for players who missed a ton of time to injury, or were REALLY ineffective, and then come back and return to a good level of production.
Cliff Lee was the no-doubt winner in the AL. In the NL, Brad Lidge doesn't even fit the definition of the award. Jorge Cantu, Kerry Wood, Rich Harden, Cristian Guzman, Ricky Nolasco, etc. would've all been better choices.
-
Re: Comeback players of the year....
IMO, even Tatis would've been a better choice
-
Re: Comeback players of the year....
Yeah, I agree on Lidge. When I was doing my picks for the year end awards on here, he wasn't even in consideration.
-
Re: Comeback players of the year....
Cantu and Tatis are very deserving in the NL. The problem with Tatis is he didn't play quite enough this season... but he was virtually out of baseball for years. In 4 major league seasons before this one, he played only 28 total games (all in 2006)!
Cantu is first on my ballot.
And don't forget Aubrey Huff in the AL. Nothing like Cliff Lee, but he had a very nice comeback of his own.
-
Re: Comeback players of the year....
Yeah, Aubrey Huff sure flew under the radar this year.

Kerry Wood, CHC 6 6 4 34

Idiots, Wood was not terrible last year, ludwick has nothing to comeback from, and Lidge was good. And Mike Hampton? Chan Ho Park? Wtf?

Park pitched 4 innings for the Mets last year. This year, he pitched 95.1 innings, mostly in relief, with LA and had a 130 ERA+. He's not that bad of a pick for a 3rd place vote.

He only pitched 22 games. This is his first full season in a while. Fine pick.

And Mike Hampton? Chan Ho Park? Wtf?
Hampton sucked this year, but it's likely a token vote to him for coming back after 3 injury-plagued seasons, and not having pitched since 2005.

Yes, but that is still not a come back. That is a come short, because he did not approach his previous level

What? This was Park's best season since 2001. yes, it's a comeback.
-
Re: Comeback players of the year....
You guys have just proved your point. both Phillie fans and Mets fans suck. Good job. Lets go Brewers.
-
Re: Comeback players of the year....
For the actual question, I would say Lidge or Tatis. Mussina??? How can you be a comeback player with one season that was equal to the league average?

Lidge..how can you be a comeback player with one season better than average?
Mussina was below league average last year. ERA of 5.15. League average ERA was 4.47, and he pitched just 152 innings. Or are you saying Moose was league average this year? Because he certainly wasn't.
How is Lidge a better pick than Mussina? Lidge didn't miss any time to injury. He had an ERA+ of 131. His WHIP was 1.25 compared to 1.23 this season. The only difference between this year and last year is that he kept the closer job all year, gave up 7 less home runs, and gave up hits at times where they hurt less. Sure, this year he was the best reliever in the NL and last year he was just a good player, but that's not what the comeback player award is for. Mussina is a way better pick.
