Mike & Mike trivia....
Mike & Mike had a trivia question yesterday which I missed the answer to and its been burning me.
I haven't looked it up, only throwing some guesses out there. The question was;
If Vlad Querrero finishes with over a .300 avg. this year (he's like at .307) he'll be only the 2nd player ever to have 11 consecutive years with .300+ avg and 25+ HR's. Who is the other to accomplish this?
So.....does anyone know the answer?
My guesses were;
Eddie Murray
Robin Yount
Mike Schmidt
I'm pretty sure its probably none of them and goes back further to someone like an Al Kaline or Stan Musial.
I really want to know the answer though.

Re: Mike & Mike trivia....
Damn I found the answer and it was someone I thought it may be but said nah, can't be.:mad:

well i'll tell you its none of those I mentioned lol. Yount wasn't even close. The guy who it is, IMO after looking at his numbers may be the most underappreciated underrated player of alltime. His numbers were simply amazing!
Cmon, lets hear some guesses!

Yeah its Gehrig, I was quite shocked at how good his numbers were. I ruled him out of my guessing process because I didn't think he had 11 high quality consecutive years due to his illness but he just met it. This guy was easily one of the 3-5 best offensive players of alltime, numbers are pretty staggering.

Yep. Gehrig's illness didn't come into play until the end of his career. He's easily the best first basemen of all time, and one of the top offensive forces ever.
And Carlos Delgado is better according to metsguy234! :p

Top 3 to 5 sounds about right. I'd put him in my own top 3. I'd probably go:
1. Ruth
2a. Williams
2b. Gehrig

Re: Mike & Mike trivia....
I would have LOVED to see williams #'s if he hadnt gone to war TWICE. he was a MONSTER.. the greatest PURE hitter... EVER

I'd agree here...although one can argue Williams #1 and Ruth #2. You never hear Gehrigs name though, I didn't realize he was this good for this long.

Re: Mike & Mike trivia....
I would put Williams, Aaron, Cobb, and maybe Mays over Ruth

You're the same guy that said Pedroia and Tululowiczsky (excuse the spelling) were more likely HOF'ers than Jeter and even AROD.
You don't get a say any longer :D:p:D

That was a year ago LOL. I have changed my perspective and have become less irrational. Jeter and A-Rod are 1st Balloters easily, and Pedrioa and Tulo have a long ways to go

Perhaps you need to look at Babe Ruth's stats again.
My 1-2-3 hitters are Ruth, Williams, and Bonds, with Gehrig a close 4th.

I know Ruth was a hitting machine, but Cobb could do everything A+, And williams may be considered the best ever if not for Korea and WWII. And Bonds was Ruth + Speed and amazing defense early on. Mays, He has a case over Ruth, but eh, Maybe he should be lower

Are you talking about pure offense or overall game?
Even considering overall game, I'd put Ruth #1, and then it's a mix of people fighting for the #2 spot with Bonds, Mays, Cobb, Williams, Gehrig, etc.
-
Re: Mike & Mike trivia....
gotta go with williams 1st then probalbly Ruth.
why do you say Ruth above Williams. Overall game It MIGHT be Ruth because he was a dominant pitcher as well

Re: Mike & Mike trivia....
Williams is as close to Ruth as anyone can be, but Ruth was a better hitter on account of the extra power. His peak was better overall as well.
Nobody else is really close to those two except Gehrig and Bonds. 10 years from now we'll probably be mentioning Pujols too. He'll be the only righty in the group.
-
Re: Mike & Mike trivia....
It actually staggering how similar Ruth and Williams numbers are for the 162 game avg. , But Ruth was a power hitter before they even existed, in 1920 and 21 he hit 54 and 59 HR no other player hit more than 24 in either year.
I think Ruth, they way he changed the game, gets the nod over Williams - who does get punished a bit for missing seasons in his prime.
-
Re: Mike & Mike trivia....
I for some reason always like to use R + RBI - (HR*2)
Williams 127 + 130 - (37*2) = 183
Ruth 141 + 143 - (46*2) = 192
Ruth is better :p

thats why I pick Ruth
Then again Ruth missed a few years pitching

Re: Mike & Mike trivia....
Ruth gets the nod because he was simply further ahead of his league than Williams was. Williams also played in slightly more favorable conditions. That, plus the extra power of Ruth, puts Ruth ahead.

RSR, you can't argue against a man who held records for generations, even after the game got heavier in offense and heavier in weight. The man is still third in all-time home runs (and I guess still second if you don't want to include steroids) and the game was almost entirely different when Ruth played.
He's not only one of the best hitters...he's pretty much the first all-power hitter in history.

How does Bonds not fit into the top 4 at least? Mays and Cobb have arguments for being better all-around players, but talking purely offensively, Bonds beats out everybody except arguably Williams, Ruth, and Gehrig.

Williams, by most accounts, was a poor fielder, and he was a poor baserunner. The top 5 are some combination of Ruth, Bonds, Williams, Gehrig, and Mays, for me.

Re: Mike & Mike trivia....
Rose must owe him some money. That would be my guess. Rose isnt even in the discussion of best hitter, or best player.
Mantle was a better hitter than either Cobb or Mays. Shorter career, of course.
I wish I could say that Teddy Ballgame was the best hitter ever. I am as big a fan of the Red Sox as exists. Most analysts rate the hitters as either 1-Ruth 2-Williams, or 1-Williams 2-Ruth. From what I can see, these two are in a class of their own.
For best hitter, my purely objective opinion is
1-Ruth
2-Williams
3-4....Mantle, Gehrig
5-10...from among Cobb, Foxx, Musial, Aaron, Mays, Dimaggio
-
Re: Mike & Mike trivia....

Re: Mike & Mike trivia....
Bonds has gone from being so well known, to somehow being FORGOTTEN and UNDERRATED. Never thought Bonds would go with those two words

Eh, he thinks Mariano Rivera is mediocre, and Alex Rodriguez isn't quite a Hall of Famer yet. His "best" lists are really based on little more than his predisposed "favorites." Notice how he put Ruth behind Cobb, which is inexplicable by any rational evaluation. He's also said that Gehrig is no better than the 10th best first basemen of all-time, and among those better than him, Carlos Delgado.
He lets his favoritism and bias take over completely when discussing and attempting to evaluate players and where they rank.
-
Re: Mike & Mike trivia....
Rose and Cobb make little to no sense in a list like this.
I also can't understand how anyone in their right mind can't rank Ruth first as the greatest hitter in baseball history. Ted Williams, because of his pure hitting ability, and for being the only player who can come anywhere close to Ruth in career numbers, sounds a little less stupid ranked first than anyone else would... but he's still a long way off by any truly rational and thorough measurement of offense.
An argument could be made that Bonds was a better hitter than Ruth, but only if you're talking about peak. In the first half of this decade, Bonds was not even in the same universe as the sport of baseball. Overall though, I'd place him behind Ruth, Williams and Gehrig, but I'm pretty sure he'd be ahead of anyone else.
