Red Sox to retire Pesky's number
Obviously for a lifetime of service, rather than onfield accomplishment. And I agree on the decision.
However a number of Sox fans have suggested as the next numbers:
Boggs: Are you kidding? Maybe he'll wear a Yankee hat at the induction ceremony or a Devil Rays hat if he gets paid enough.
Clemens: BAHAHAHHA...no
Tony C: No. No. Sorry.
Rice, Evans, Tiant: No, no, no. Nostalgia doesn't merit inclusion.
Manny: No. effing. way. Gaudy numbers don't merit inclusion either. Even if they are amazing.
Nomah: No-way. Sorry Nomar.
My picks: Francona someday (If he dropped dead of a heart attack tomorrow, they'd retire it opening day 2009), Pedro, and maybe Ortiz.
-
Re: Red Sox to retire Pesky's number
I would retire Manny, Ortiz, Pedro, Boggs, Francona, and Nomar out of your list
-
Re: Red Sox to retire Pesky's number
Pedro is maybe, but he pitched 7 or is 16 season in a redsox uni.
Im generally agianst retiring guys who a a few good season with the team which leaves out guys like pedro, manny tiant even clemens and Ortiz (unless ortiz layes another 6 years in a Sox uni then talk)
Retired numbers should be guys that are Iconic with the team - While a player like Boggs is close to that there was a touch of acrimony is his leaving --
the Only guys that fit that Bill you listed area Rice (who should have alreasy been in th HOF) and maybe Evans ...
-
Re: Red Sox to retire Pesky's number
Nowadays, you'll be hardpressed to find many guys that spend more than 7-8 seasons with one single team...so if you go by that, you'll be leaving out a good amount of deserving guys.
Clemens spent 13 years with BOston (11 full)...that's a "a few good seasons"?
I'm not a Boston fan, but if I was, I'd want Boggs, Pedro, Clemens, and Manny to have their numbers retired...maybe Ortiz.
-
Re: Red Sox to retire Pesky's number
To me a guy who's number is retired should epitomize the team and the team "spirit" so to speak or "tradition" is probably a better word.
I think the Pesky retirement is awesome. I can even see Rice and maybe Evans and Tiant.
Clemens yeah bt I think there needs to be some time for that one to happen. Boggs yeah but again...time.

Thats fine, but Boggs and Clemens are special cases, otherwise odd are they'd be on track for that ... and If a guys isn't Iconic with a team beacuse he spent 6 years with one team then 7 years with another then 5 with a 3rd, then why should he have his Number retired with a specific team ...
Retiring a number for a player for a specific team has to have isn;t done just cuz of how well a player played, its what he meant to the orgaization, like I said Pedro is is a maybe simply for How good he was for those years.
But, according to the Sox rule
"The Red Sox policy on retiring uniform numbers is based on the following criteria:
• Election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame
• At least 10 years played with the Red Sox "
So no manny, no pedro and Ortiz has a waays to go seeing how he isn;t a HOFer.
-
Re: Red Sox to retire Pesky's number
Yeah, it won't happen under the organization's rules.
-
Re: Red Sox to retire Pesky's number
Rice Pedro and maybe Ortiz should have there numbers retired
-
Re: Red Sox to retire Pesky's number
Pedro could become a HOFer, ANd I think he should

Re: Red Sox to retire Pesky's number
wouldn't surprise me to see Ortiz make the HOF, not that I'm saying he should. Playing or Boston/New York boosts people's numbers in the eyes of voters/ESPN.
Curt Schilling is another guy that could get his number retired, or maybe just his sock

Thats how I feel, but his "wins" count will discourage the Buster Olneys and Steve Phillips out there

They're not THAT stupid. Nobody is. Pedro is a surefire Hall of Famer. His peak was astronomical.
-
Re: Red Sox to retire Pesky's number
With those stupid, strict rules of theirs, this team could end up not being able to retire ANY numbers from the team that "broke the curse," or last year's team.

They are THAT stupid, look at that idiot they handed a mike and told to cover baseball games

Yeh, but Pesky's not in the Baseball HoF, right?
Isn't he "just" in the Red Sox HoF?
I wonder if the Sox policy really, in actual practice, draws that strict a distinction...
But, that being said, it is the organization's policy, and, as such, can be subject to change/exception any time they see fit, no?

They are not stupid enough to say that Pedro Martinez is anything less than a first ballot Hall of Famer.

They claim Kent is not a HOFer, and obviously he is a lesser player, but I would not put it past them to denounce Pedro

You greatly overestimate the voters stupidity. Sure, they're stupid, but Pedro will definitely get in overwhelmingly on the first ballot.
P.S. - I'm 99% sure that Steve Phillips isn't a HoF voter.

Well of course they can change it if they want to it there own rule.
With Pesky they obviously made an exception with how involved he has been with the organization.

The two cases are 100% completely and utterly different.

LOL!
Pedro Martinez does not deserve induction into the Hall of Fame. He doesn't even have 250 wins, his career has been plagued with injuries, and he has lately been very un-clutch. He should never be inducted into the HOF, it's not the Hall of Very Good Players, it's the Hall of Fame.

I used to think that you were just incredibly misguided and have yet to teach yourself about baseball....but now, I think you're just a troll, and you're saying the things you do for no other reason than to get reactions.

I bet Metsguy will go work for ESPN :D. See, this is the reaction I expect from some of the voters

But Pedro Martinez is a Met... I wouldn't say bad things about him if I didn't believe they were true.

And you're bitter because he had one good season with New York before succumbing to injuries, so you're too blind to look at what he did with Boston and Montreal. He'd make the Hall of Fame, deservingly, if he retired after 2004.
-
Re: Red Sox to retire Pesky's number
Out of the active players at or closing in on retirement, Pedro is right up there at the top in terms of HOF worthiness. Doing my best not to forget anyone, I'd rank it something like this:
1. Barry Bonds
2. Greg Maddux
3. Frank Thomas
4. TIE - Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, Roger Clemens
7. Ken Griffey Jr.
8. Mike Piazza
9. Tom Glavine
10. Mariano Rivera
11. Jeff Kent
12. Sammy Sosa
13. Ivan Rodriguez
14. Trevor Hoffman
15. Gary Sheffield
Roughly... point is, Pedro is easily one of the most deserving players of this generation (with some incredible players above and around him). Everyone I listed from 1 to 12 is a lock, and only an idiot would deny them.

I'd say a lock, if you're not considering steroid allegations. We really have no idea how voters are gonna deal with Bonds or Sosa...They might give them both the McGwire treatment.
And while I think Jeff Kent is deserving of the HOF, I wouldn't call him a lock.

Ken Griffey Jr. below Pedro is just crazy talk, he should be Numero Uno on that list.
Rivera shouldn't be above any of the guys that he's above (except maybe I-Rod)

Kent and Hoffman over Thome? WHy? He has been one of the ERA's greatest. And Manny should be on that list, and if you are including Bonds and Sosa, Clemens should be there

I knew I'd forgotten someone. Thanks. I'm correcting the list now.
Manny is not nearing retirement age. He's still got 5 years left, at least.

I think he's a lock because of what he did at the position. I'd eat my Dodgers cap if he gets denied. I don't even like him, I just can't imagine he gets left out of the HOF with all those gaudy 2B numbers.
My list ignores steroids completely. I think Sosa is more likely to get left off than Bonds is. I could see the writers not voting for Bonds the first time to "send a message," but his "pre-steroids" play was so great that he can't really be ignored.

Rivera is the greatest closer ever, whether or not you agree with it. Sorry.
Pedro was the greatest pitcher in the majors during his peak. He helped "break the curse." Griffey is very, very close.

Because Kent was by FAR the best 2B of his time. Hoffman has the saves record (as much as we say it's not worth something, it can add up to meaning something over time). Besides, Hoffman's numbers are disgustingly good, and he was the second best reliever of his time, suffering from playing at the same time as the greatest EVER (Rivera).
Thome was never really that fantastic compared to his peers... but he racked up some very good career numbers, and was a top-notch player. I'd put every player I listed in the HOF if I could vote.
Keep in mind, there are a TON of excellent players still active that will be getting into the Hall of Fame. Thome being low on THAT list doesn't really speak against him.

No, Trevor Hoffman is the greatest closer of all time. But thanks for playing the Who the Hell is the Greatest Closer of all Time? Game! :D
-

Thome was one of the best hitters of any era really. An extremely good hitter.

Look at OTHER #'s. So, I guess your beloved John Franco did not save 450 games, so he sucks
