Depends on what you mean by "best", GH...I think that it's a sad story...now if you were to have posted most "significant" story of 2008, off the top of my head, I'd nominate the Tom Brady injury.
As for the best story of this year, I vote "Yay, Rays!"

Re: Best sport stories for 09.
1) 2009 is next year
2) Sabathia went to the non-existent MLB team called the Bucks, apparently
3)It would be the first year without the Yankees in the playoffs since 1993-15 years
4) I vote for the Rays

Rays.
They're also directly involved with the Yankees not making it to the postseason.
-
Re: Best sport stories for 09.
I think Cliff Lee should be in this poll. But my vote is for CC Sabathia.
-
Re: Best sport stories for 09.
I have no idea what will happen in 2009. As for 2008, I think the Devil Rays breaking the Yankees/Sox stranglehold is the most important.

The Bucks are the Pirates. Bucks is short for bucaneers

Re: Best sport stories for 09.
Uh... what about Michael Phelps?
Or the Olympic Men's Basketball Team?
I'd vote Phelps.
But I went with Favre here. That's arguably the best QB ever (me, I've got him behind a few guys, including Montana and Young, but he's the career leader in everything, and it's easy to argue he's the greatest) and an absolute legend, switching teams... after spending an entire career practically owning one of the NFL's most "storied" franchises. It's the biggest story, even though many people are already sick to death of it.
CC switching sports and going to basketball would be the biggest story of the year, but it didn't happen.
It *is* "Bucs," not "Bucks," if you're talking about the Pirates, but I believe Grasshopper was tired and/or drunk and confused the Milwaukee Brewers and Milwaukee Bucks.

And Sabathia never went to the Pirates :p
I editted the title for you, grasshopper, to make it 08.

Most Significant Sport Stories of 08
Since the other poll seemed to have failed miserably, I will create a new one. Yeah.

Re: Most Significant Sport Stories of 08
The other poll is fine...
-
Re: Most Significant Sport Stories of 08
Once again, no Michael Phelps!??
Possibly the best performance by an athlete in any sport, ever, and he gets overlooked twice?
Shame...
-
Re: Most Significant Sport Stories of 08
oh man... i created three extra spots for men's basketball, women's basketball, and michael phelps
and instead i fill em with the bcs bowl, clemens and teixeira
i feel like an idiot
ahha

Re: Most Significant Sport Stories of 08
What's wrong with the other poll?
I'm going to close one of them, as they're both basically the same.
-
Re: Most Significant Sport Stories of 08
Yeah, I was definitely say Michael Phelps is the story of 2008!
-
Re: Most Significant Sport Stories of 08
LOL Roger Clemens was like 2 years ago. I forgot all about it.

Re: Most Significant Sport Stories of 08
I'm merging these threads, using this poll.

guess CC was traded to Milwaukee's Basketball team ( and honestly with the way that franchise is run, its a possibility they'd make a play for him)

I know he never went to the Pirates. If Huntington did that he would be in debt for many, many years
-
Re: Most Significant Sport Stories of 08
Well, for me it's a tough call between the Rays and Brady's injury. In the end, I went with the Brady injury, since I think it created the idea for a LOT of teams around the league that "Hey, we have a chance."

Make a new poll, JapIrish:D - you left out the rise of hardcore fighting, and the fact that the heavyweight boxing champion of the world is white...

Actually, the biggest rise in hardcore fighting would have been a year or 2 ago. It has CONTINUED to rise since then, but that's when it started moving up.

What A.B. was aware of two years ago, Rongar has just noticed:o

Re: Most Significant Sport Stories of 08
I think Giants over New England. Nobody saw that coming.
Favre returning to another team doesn't surprise me. Celtics winning the title and LSU clobbering OSU doesn't surprise me at all either.

Re: Most Significant Sport Stories of 08
I would pick none, instead I am going to pick Jon Lester throwing a no-hitter, after he came back from cancer, a no-hitter is tough to do, but doing it after you got cancer is incredible.
-
Re: Most Significant Sport Stories of 08
Lance Armstrong broke the glow of 'doing something after cancer'

I change my vote to that. I saw Lester pitch today when I went to the game, and I saw him in his 2nd to last game before cancer. This guy is truly awesome

Re: Most Significant Sport Stories of 08
Sorry for leaving Phelps off the list. Should be there. The problem is that most people forget Olympians within 10 years. Most people dont even remember Mark Spitz.
As for football, everyone remembers the undefeated Dolphins and Pats and will for a long time.
Baseball, everyone remembers the first time the Marlins/ DBacks/ Rockies first world series as expasion teams. The Rays are the only ones left.

Re: Most Significant Sport Stories of 08
Yankees not making the playoffs!
-
Re: Most Significant Sport Stories of 08
I have a great idea for a new story in 2008: make football an Olympic sport!
Wouldn't that be a great idea? Even Peyton Manning is behind this idea and so am I.
If anyone else wants to support this idea, there is a petition hosted on Weplay.com (I'm writing on their behalf) and I will provide the link for you to sign!
