Paul Byrd traded to Red Sox
goodbye Buchholz?
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?...tnerId=rss_bos
Not sure what this gets us...we already have Bartolo Colon, Clay Buchholz, and Wakefield fighting for the 4-5 rotation spots...that is ignoring the AAA contenders that could fill a 5th starter role just fine (Kyle snyder, David Pauley, Charlie Zink, and Justin Masterson). I don't think more starting pitching is what we need...although he has put up some solid numbers post-ASB. If there's no cost, I guess it's not a bad move.
Personally, I would send Buchholz to AAA and throw Byrd in the rotation. Let Zink make 2-3 starts and see how he does, then go from there.

Re: Paul Byrd traded to Red Sox
Well wakefield is on the DL, so us Colon who isn't ready to comeback ... and Im not sure if you've seen Buchholz's last 6 starts (0-5, 30.1IP, 7.42ERA, 5.0 BB/9)
But they are almost Kennedy-esque Masterson is needed in the BP and i guess they aren't convinve the other kids are reay yet

Re: Paul Byrd traded to Red Sox
Possibly the most boring trade I've seen this season.
-
Re: Paul Byrd traded to Red Sox
WHAT? It's the red sox, defending WS champs. Hot starter, going to be FA, embroiled in steroid controversy last year during his playoff run. Deal between the defending ALCS champs. Post-waiver wire deal. What's not exciting??
I know, I know, Casey Blake gonig to the dodgers was totally jaw-dropping...but still, man! :D

Re: Paul Byrd traded to Red Sox
eh, its not awful, but it gives us a former 'roider, which I believe we did not have on the big club 'til now. (Not counting players no longer on the team). But Paul is a nice guy

He didn't do steroids. He did HGH to help heal an injury.
Also, you had Eric Gagne last year. And I'm sure there are multiple Red Sox that have done roids in the past that aren't known users...

Yes, that is hilarious, I agree. And yes, I know you were on the team last year and did 'roids. I mean this year. And I know it was HGH, but still, it is a performance enhancer

That can't be known until we know who the player to be named later is. They weren't keeping Byrd after this season, so they're saving themselves money and possibly getting someone useful in return. It really can't be a "horrible" trade. He's not part of their future, and they're not contending this year.

they are but their the laughing stock of sports

draft picks cannot be traded in MLB.

Re: Paul Byrd traded to Red Sox
many times the player to be nammed later is a new drafted player that they must wait until after the season to get :)

I don't think that is correct, but it COULD be a newly drafted player.....but they don't HAVE to wait until the end of the season. As long as the player isn't on the 40 man roster.

name one??? never seen this happen.
I love the trade for Boston....you can NEVER have enough starting pitching. Sox need to be concerned about their rotation.
- Disuke fell apart end of last season, a full year from him remains questionable.
- Wake is hurt
- Lester had pain a couple starts ago and is already above his innings pitched max in his career I believe....if not he's on pace to smash it still.
- Bucky has been horrific
- Colon is hurt
Other than Beckett...who lets face it has not been stellar the first half but is pitching well of late, they are by no means set.

I don't think it can be a player drafted in 2008. A newly drafted player can't be traded for a year after he signs a professional contract. And player to be named later trades must be completed within six months. Hence, a player drafted this June can't be part of this deal.

sounds right to me. I forgot about the first year rule. Like I always say, I reserve the right to be wrong.
