I like this idea. I think MOST positions would involve a knock down, drag out scrap to decide.

Re: The 2008 Sports Mogul MLB Awards
Here's what bothers me. His favorite team contains Pedro, Johan Santana, Billy Wagner, Carlos Delgado, Jose Reyes, David Wright, Carlos Beltran...
And he fixates on John Maine?
-
Re: The 2008 Sports Mogul MLB Awards
You've never focused on one of the supporting guys on a favorite team? I LOVE the muckers in hockey, and the big nose tackles in football.
-
Re: The 2008 Sports Mogul MLB Awards
Au contraire, my favorite player on my favorite team (Red Sox) is Tim Wakefield. Not exactly a first-ballot Hall of Famer.
However, the level of near-worship of John Maine is quite astonishing, considering the number of multi-time All-Stars on that roster.
-
Re: The 2008 Sports Mogul MLB Awards
I'll grant you he is an interesting choice.
Metsguy, if you do read this, how did you come to worship at the altar of John Maine?

However, if the White Sox pull some kinda magic, Ozzie Guillen would be hard to argue with. Especially given all that he and his team have gone through this year.
I'm not even sure Guillen would come in third place.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't the Rays expected to be good & compete for the division this year?
Gardenhire would get my vote, barring a mega colapse in the last month. The Twins weren't supposed to do jack this year after losing their best pitcher & hitter in the offseason.
-
Re: The 2008 Sports Mogul MLB Awards
Gardenhire and Maddon and maybe Scosia deserve the award in the Al. In the NL, Lou Pinella, or Freddy Gonzalez seem like good canidates. Tony LaRussa has done well with a bad team as well.
-
Re: The 2008 Sports Mogul MLB Awards
I don't think the Rays were expected to "compete." They were expected to be good, but I don't think that many people expected them to hang with the Sox, Yankess, or even the Blue Jays, let alone top that division and often have the best record in all of baseball.
Ron Gardenhire is a strong candidate for sure, as would be Ozzie Guillen (same circumstances, both were expected to be crushed by the Tigers and Indians). But the Twins are a competitive team every year, and the Sox are only a few years removed from a World Series title (with most of those players intact).
But come on... the first winning season in the franchise's history? Winning the AL East? Possibly the best record in baseball?
I'd be truly stunned if Maddon didn't win the real life award.

No they the Rays were expected to be better and get over .500 for the season ..
but no one thought they'd win the divsion or make the playoffs

That's 26 people predicting and no one had the Rays ....

Depends on who you talk to. Everybody expected them to improve greatly and play around .500. A number of people, usually the more analytical type, expected them to compete with Boston and New York. I'd say very few people expected them to be competing for the best record in baseball.

It's also ESPN ;)
PECOTA's predictions had the Rays winning 88 games. A number of other "sabermetric" types agreed with roughly that much. As I said, that's "competing" and being in the playoff discussion, but, yeah, nobody expected them to be THIS good.
Any input on the amount of players listed on each ballot?

Looks good to me, but all the GGs and SSs are going to turn into huge lists and add some work to the process when things are being tallied.
What's the point system breakdown for ranks on everything?

I'll handle that.

I haven't decided that yet. I have to look further at how the real life MVP/Cy Young/ROY points are distributed.

Check the first post. I have numbers listed for each different award.

Not complaining or anything, but 10 seems high for MVP (or any award for that matter) Enjoy counting all those votes Houston!
-
Re: The 2008 Sports Mogul MLB Awards
I would lower the MVP total to 5. I now feel my suggestion was too high. But other than that your over awards look good
-
Re: The 2008 Sports Mogul MLB Awards
The MVP award in real life uses a 10 slot ballot, which is why I'm using 10 here. I don't mind counting the votes. For the MVP, Cy Young, and ROTY, I'm good with what I have listed. Just wondering what others thought about the others.

Re: The 2008 Sports Mogul MLB Awards
I've posted a preliminary set of rules in the first post. I'll sticky this thread when the voting begins.
-
Re: The 2008 Sports Mogul MLB Awards
Wait - why can't we keep this on the forums? Why are we emailing ballots?

It's written in the first post - to make it easier for me to count them,. Like I said, if you want to post your ballot on the forum, go ahead, but email it to me as well.
EDIT: I decided to count votes sent either via email OR private message over the forums.

I'd prefer that the votes be directly sent to me, as I said. It's easier to count them if they come to me in PM/email, as I don't have to also sift through any side discussion. I'll make another thread when voting starts for people to list their votes in and discuss them.
-
Re: The 2008 Sports Mogul MLB Awards
no
Sorry i didnt clarrify... I menat make another thread with the results... so we may discuss them and yell a people that did not vote the same way as me lol

Oh, yeah, of course. I'll be posting the full results of each award (not the votes of each person, but the overall tallies), probably in a couple threads, as there's going to be a lot of info.

Re: The 2008 Sports Mogul MLB Awards
This is going to be really cool.
-
Re: The 2008 Sports Mogul MLB Awards
When do you want us to vote, at the end of the season or now. A lot can change from a #1 to a #2 in Cy Young (say a bad 2 weeks..ect) same with MVP and other awards.
-
Re: The 2008 Sports Mogul MLB Awards
and of season I believe he said
-
Re: The 2008 Sports Mogul MLB Awards
End of the season. I'll make a post.
-
Re: The 2008 Sports Mogul MLB Awards
What will you do with obvious BS votes? Like, let's say my ballot looked like:
MVP: Andre Ethier
Cy Young: Chad Billingsley
Gold Gloves: James Loney, Jeff Kent, Angel Berroa, Blake DeWitt, etc.
Rookie of the Year: Blake DeWitt
etc...

I don't know. I'm hoping people aren't jerks like that.

I'm guessing John Maine gets exactly one first place vote for Cy Young.

Im hoping there won't be enough for that person to win.
