Piazza Hall of Fame Poll
I think we all can say that Mike Piazza is a surefire Hall of Famer, but will he go in as a Dodger or a Met?
I say as a Met.
-
Re: Piazza Hall of Fame Poll
I said Mets, though I wouldn't be surprised if they did a "cap not showing" type thing like they've done with some players in the past.
-
Re: Piazza Hall of Fame Poll
Yes he's in.....Dodger.....Mets.......I agree it'll be a cap not showing.
-
Re: Piazza Hall of Fame Poll
Dodger, because they took a chance on him because he is a relative of Lasorda. Wasn't he drafted something like 63rd round...

Yeah, 62nd round. And Lasorda was his godfather, I think.
I don't think he will want to go in as a Dodger, though, because he was a Mets fan favorite (definitely my favorite Met of all time)

Re: Piazza Hall of Fame Poll
He doesn't get to decide, though.

Well, he gets to express his preference, and they'll accept it unless he picks something unreasonable (like the Marlins)

Fixed

Re: Piazza Hall of Fame Poll
Is this a joke? Of course he'll go in as a Met.

Why so sure?
He had his best seasons in LA.

The guy is a LEGEND in New York. Non-statistically speaking he had his best years in New York.

Re: Piazza Hall of Fame Poll
I am a legend, and I would not want my plaque to be a New York team, so your point is?

I think "Legend" might be overstating things a bit.

Not in my case :)

Re: Piazza Hall of Fame Poll
I don't know why people make such a big deal out of what hat a player wears. Most fans don't even know all the players from their favorite team who are in the HOF.

Tom Seaver as a Met
Former Mets in with other teams
-Yogi Berra
-Eddie Murray
-Warren Spahn
-Richie Ashburn
-Casey Stengel
-Nolan Ryan
Oh, and Piazza is a LEGEND in NY. Trust me, I live in NYC, and Piazza is a hero to all the Mets fans here.
-
Re: Piazza Hall of Fame Poll
Remember, everyone, the question here is What team will Piazza represent? not What team should Piazza represent?
He won a pennant with the Mets, was a fan favorite, had some great seasons, played more in NY then LA (by like 1 year), and provided countless memories to Mets fans.

I'm not in either NYC or LA, so why should I give a **** what the fans in either city think of him? He's a Dodger, not a Met.

Why? , his statistics are nearly equal with each team... and he obviously liked playing in NY more, since he won a pennant here and was a fan favorite.
-
Re: Piazza Hall of Fame Poll
didger but i say he goes in with no team... like clemens will (unfortunatly)

Because, IMO, he had his best years in LA, not NY. Just look at the MVP vote--he got MVP votes in all 5 of his full seasons in LA, but in only 3 of his 7 full seasons in NY (well, OK, 2003 wasn't exactly a full season for him).
To somebody who isn't in NY or LA, it is not obvious that he liked playing in NY better.

I don't live in NY, but I live in NJ, and close to NY...and it's not obvious at all to me where he liked playing better...And honestly, I'm not so sure "where a player liked most" should be taken into consideration for deciding his Hall of Fame cap. To me, since the Hall is meant to honor the greatest players, it should, therefore, by extension, have players wear the cap of where they played the greatest, and for Piazza, that's LA by a hair.

But he gets first choice. He gives his preference to the board of the hall of fame and they either approve or deny it. If he picked either LA or NY, I have no doubt in my mind that they would approve it.

I see this is a big deal to you. I agree if he picks a team they would 'probably' approve it, but I never say i'm sure with anything MLB or any of its committees do. I wouldn't be surprised if they overrid either choice he gave for various reasons.
-
Re: Piazza Hall of Fame Poll
Assuming that he's actually elected and that the board does the logical thing and accepts whatever he would prefer (and that he would have a preference himself),
Quote:

Plus he started his career there. And then of course there was the reception that he received when he first arrived in NY. I remember going to a game in Shea in '98 or '99 where the fans just wouldn't let up on him.
Anyway, blood is thicker than water and all of that, and LaSorda's bleeds Dodger Blue...

Holy crap, you live in Jersey? I always thought you lived in Texas. :p

Re: Piazza Hall of Fame Poll
Common mistake. I made my name when I was like 12, and I was playing as the Astros in one of my first Baseball Mogul games, and I never changed it, so it stuck.

Re: Piazza Hall of Fame Poll
You know... Dee could change it, if you asked.

I'd be so pissed if he went in as a Dodger... :(

Re: Piazza Hall of Fame Poll
Who voted "He's not going to the Hall of Fame"?
Come on! He's definetely in the top 5 greatest catchers of all time and (arguably) could even be in the top 3 (behind Bench and Berra, maybe Carter)

The guy was a Met for as long as I can remember, until I was 10 1/2. I grew up watching him play. He was my favorite player. How could he go in as a Dodger?
-
Re: Piazza Hall of Fame Poll
Because what he wants has nothing to do with the perception of a kid in New York.
He had his best seasons as a Dodger. The Dodgers drafted him in the 62nd round and didn't give up on him. The Dodgers gave him the chance to become a star. He became a star as a Dodger. He has family ties to the Dodgers. There are many reasons why he'd want to go in as a Dodger.
Personally, when I think of him, I remember him as a Dodger, but that's because when he was on the Dodgers, I was the age you were when he was on the Mets. That's the perception you have, but that has nothing at all to do with what he wants.
And you really shouldn't let the team that a baseball player wants to represent in the Hall of Fame "piss you off."

You're allowing your (obviously skewed) perception to cloud your judgment.
