Well, you know, aside from the first year in Miller, where they were the most profitable team in baseball...but ol' Buddy boy had to 'prove' that the small market could never keep up, so they sat on the cash.

heh
id vote yes an dcharacter has NOTHING to do with it. look at cobb the biggest jerk of them all
i think if him as a brave and yankee.. lol I didnt even realize he played for san diego and I forgot about la
I agree, especially on the first ballot. I think a lot of the power hitters from the "steroid era" won't make it on at least the first ballot, and maybe a few more. The writers will end up making a statement that way, whether it's right or not.
Sheffield will definitely make the Hall of Fame. 2600 hits, 500 HR - why is this even a question?
Oh, Pavelb did.
Who cares who did - it's a thread relevant to current times.
Yes, it is, i was just wondering. And yes, Sheffield should be a HOFer
Sheffield should be a first ballot HOFer- there is no question about that at all. Legendary player.
I think he definitely deserves to get in.
And on an unrelated note, how many other players have been an All Star for five different teams? The only two that I can find are Sheffield and Moises Alou.
They're probably the only ones...although, all I did was just do a quick look through the guys with the most ASG appearances on Baseball-Ref, which only shows guys with 8 or more.
I think Sheffield is a Craftsman-quality tool and I wouldn't vote for him. One does wonder though what hat he would wear if he did get in. Hasn't he pretty much worn out his welcome everywhere he's been?
I think it will depend on if the HOF voters look at his off field problems or not. On just numbers I think he deserves it but as a human being he doesn't.
The problem & I think it has been stated clearly is that HOF voters aren't computers but subjective human beings & vote accordingly - on the numbers McGwire should be in but as Voters clearly stated are those numbers for real ?
Even Sheffield was openly linked to BALCO,not per se as clearly as Barry but still used "the (it aint a steroid but it is a steroid) cream & clear" in 2002.
Also his personality (& that relation) with reporters WHO constitute the majority of the voters will be negative. After a time (or when the steroid drama & his "personality") gets forgotten then the numbers will be more important.
I see him a 5th or 6th timer selection. ;)
