Astros pick up Randy Wolf
The Padres sent starter Randy Wolf to the Astros for a 26 year old reliever, Chad Reineke.
I guess Ed Wade still has delusions of contending? He didn't give up anything really, but picking up a free-agent-to-be when you have little to no shot at contending is really a waste.
Re: Astros pick up Randy Wolf
1st why would the Padres even do this?
Do the Padres really need to cut the 2 mil Wolf is owed? And why not try to hold onto him for another week and see if an injury forces someone to panic trade?
Is a marginal 26 year-old minor leaguer really that hard to talk the Yankees's out of?
And why would Houston? they They are 10 games and 6 teams from a play off spot. Granted they didn't really give up anything but still.
Re: Astros pick up Randy Wolf
Well, Houston's utterly delusional, so I get that side of things...but, yeah, you'd imagine there's a chance that the Yanks or somebody are willing to chuck you something a little better than that for Wolf.
Re: Astros pick up Randy Wolf
Its one thing to extol the virtues of the trade where both teams win ..
But this is the equally rare case where both teams lose!

This is a fine deal from San Diego's standpoint. Clearly, most teams were smart enough to realize that Wolf has been awful outside of the pitcher's haven that is Petco Park, and is also an injury risk. I doubt they could've gottne much more than Reineke from any other team. I agree with what Rob Neyer said in his blog. The $2 million saved will likely do more for San Diego than the reliever they picked up will.

This is because their management is utterly delusional. It was only a couple days ago that I think it was GM Ed Wade, but might've been owner Drayton McLane, said that they still believed they had a legitimate shot at the playoffs.

That'd be an even dumber move than trading for him.

Did you hear something about them eyeing an extension for Wolf, or is that just your own hunch?

worthless trade on both parts.
Re: Astros pick up Randy Wolf
$2 million saved has its value. San Diego didn't gain much, but they gained something. Houston, on the other hand...

Might be a little bit of an explanation to why San Diego would do this trade.
Re: Astros pick up Randy Wolf
best case scenario, Astros offer Wolf arbitration and get a compensation pick to beef up their sad sack farm system when wolf signs elsewhere.

Wolf isnt arb eligible nor will the astros get a comp. pick for him.

Offering him arbitration doesn't require him to be arb-eligible. Teams need to offer a player arbitration if they want to get compensation picks for the player if he signs with another team. We won't know for sure until the rankings come out whether or not Wolf will bring back a comp. pick, though.
