Really the important thing to the Yankees is how effective he's been this season against lefties -- something that's been a glaring weakness in their offense.

They're falling into the trap of overvaluing a small sample size though. Yes, he has a 1.045 OPS against lefties this season...in 71 plate appearances.
Last year, he was better against lefties than righties, but nothing special against them - .752 OPS vs. lefties, .675 vs. righties. In 2006, he was better against righties with a .866 OPS against them and a .763 OPS against lefties. For his career, he's only marginally better against lefties - .879 OPS vs. lefties and a .842 OPS against righties. Recent history shows that he's not a lefty-killer as his 2008 would seem to indicate.
Although, all that matters is that he's an upgrade on their current options (Wilson Betemit), and that would seem to be true.

So why isn't Dougie Alphabet still around if that's the kind of guy you want taking up a bench spot?

Maybe, but...

Exactly. They have the roster space with Matsui likely done for the season, and certainly can afford the $160k or so they'll pay him. If he doesn't perform, no big deal, he'll mostly be on the bench anyway and is costing almost nothing. And that's one reason to sign him instead of Bonds; who's more likely to take limited playing time in stride, and who's more likely to create a lot of drama about it?

Because it wasn't, when the season started.

Hey Yanks are winning 1st game back and Sexson is already contributing!

Yeah, it's likely that he is gonna hit .350 BA, .400 OBP, and .600 SLG% for the rest of the season. Seems like going to the Yankees always rejuvenate players.

Players like Embree, Myers, Dougie Alphabet, Tony Clark, Kevin Brown, Randy Johnson, Estaban Loiza, Mark Bellhorn

Umm... Don't believe that most of the guys lists needed to be rejuvenated. Clark, Brown, Johnson, Loiza were all good/washed players coming to the Yanks. Embree, and Bellhorn never were any good, really. Doug Mientkiewicz never was any good, really, and actually hit above his career average. Mike Myers had 3.23 ERA, and 2.66 ERA while he was here... AGAIN... WELL above his career average.

Re: Sexson signs with Yankees
Sorry, I couldn't help it...for a couple of years there, it seemed like everytime I turned around some mediocre (cept for Damon of course) 2004 Sox player was in pinstripes. And it *seemed* like the Sox beat Embree and Myers around....

This isn't serious, is it?

Lol, it was a joke. All I expect is solid defense and a good productive bat off the bench.

You might get the latter.

At first base, maybe the former as well at least in terms of a defensive upgrade. That's judging admittedly by only yesterday's game, but the Yankees have no one else playing first who could have thrown the bullet to second that Sexson did.

Re: Sexson signs with Yankees
Richie got DFA today. They also sent Melky down to AAA.

Cody Ransom > Richie Sexson?

Re: Sexson signs with Yankees
Not really sure what the Yanks are doing here....OK Sexson....yeah I could see where you might want something better but Ransom? Cabrera for Gardner? Gardner is now the CF....really how is this better?
-
Re: Sexson signs with Yankees
I know its hard for you to understand but this is called rebuilding. This happens when the team has no shot at the playoffs and they release the older players to see what the youngsters can do.

Cody Ransom is 32...
-
Re: Sexson signs with Yankees
Cody Ransom also hasn't played in the majors this year and Cabrera is only 23....his BA was higher than Gardner's and he was doing ok on defense.

Dropping Cabrera I understand completely. Gardner's probably just as good defensively, and has been very good in the minors, and provides more speed than Cabrera. Cabrera has done absolutely nothing lately. Since June 1, he's hit .223/.275/.282...in other words, horrible. Gardner didn't do well in his first stint, but it was just 59 at bats, you can't make any evaluation off that, nor should you be making any comparison based solely on batting average.. Gardner possesses better plate discipline than Cabrera, as well, . It's worth seeing what Gardner can do and seeing if Cabrera can refine his swing in the minors.
-
Re: Sexson signs with Yankees
Yeah but Gardner is not a sure thing in the majors and it seems risky when you at least know what you have with Cabrera!

This is the fallacy that many teams fall into. When you know what you have and what you have isn't a good player, it's better to take a risk on an unknown player with potential and see what you have.
I'd rather see what I have in the "not sure thing" with potential, than play a "sure thing" that isn't good.

In April and May fine....40 games before the end of the season with your WC/WS chances on the line....NO!

Re: Sexson signs with Yankees
RickD...
I'm a Yankees fan myself, and I'm sorry to have to say this ... but ... at the end ... it was painless. :(
Who am I kidding. Watching these Yankees play has been very painful. I don't even want to remember how many RISP they've stranded.
So, yeah, bring up the prospects and see what they've got to work with next year. (checks AAA roster) Seems like there's not much there. :(

the WC is NOT on the line lol Minny, CWS and BOS would have to all collapse and thats not going to happen. I think they are trying to showcase some young guys hopeing they get hot and they can use them to trade for guys

That'd actually be quite a silly thing to do, as you'd be making a decision based on a month or two, and that should not be done.

They're 7 games out of the Wild Card with 3 teams ahead of them. I wouldn't say that those WC chances are "on the line." It'd take a huge amount of things breaking perfectly right for the Yankees to make the playoffs this year. They'll need to play REALLY good and 3 other teams will have to play REALLY bad. In that situation, seeing what you have in a guy that's at least the same and potentially better as a guy you've been running out there daily, is a very good decision.

Re: Sexson signs with Yankees
Brett Gardner goes 3 for 4 with a walkoff single...:)
