If you could be any athlete
through out history for just 1 day, who would it be and what day of their life would it be? Would you be Lou Gehrig on the day he gave his luckiest man alive speech? Hank Aaron when he hit number 715? Roger Maris the day he belted number 61 into the bleechers? Jessie Owens when he humbled the nazis runners? Heracles wrestling the giant Antaeus? Babe Ruth on the day of his called shot?
Re: If you could be any athlete
Kirk Gibson, 1988 world series. Game one. Ninth inning. Two out. Mike Davis on second.
I have a torn up knee and only have basically one leg. I work the count to full against Dennis Eckersley who is the best closer in the game today. I think back to Mel Didier's scouting report. With a full count against a left-handed power hitter, he's almost certain to throw a back door slider. I dig in. Eckersley begins his delivery. The ball is low and away. A slider. I reach for it. My knee screams in pain. 55,983 fans scream with expectation. The ball clears the fence as I'm half way to first base. The pain in my knee is forgotten as I pump my fist twice before reaching second. I step on home plate for the winning run in game one of the World Series.

I don't know about just one day, there's too many to choose from. But a dude that I really envy is Greg Maddux. Financially, he's set for life, so he can do whatever he wants. He's had a stellar career and is a surefire first ballot Hall of Famer, so he doesn't have to prove anything to anybody. He's in his 40s now but he's still pitching because he's still effective, he enjoys it and plays close to his home, and with his style of pitching he could probably do it 2-3 more years if he wants to. Maybe more, who knows. Sure the Padres suck this year but they would trade Maddux to a pennant contender if he wants to go. He gets to work with young pitchers, give them the benefit of his experience, and is known as a practical joker.
To me, Maddux is where Joe Everyman would like to be.
