C.C Sweeptakes over goes to Brewers
It looks like the next time C.C. Sabathia takes the mound he'll be donning a Milwaukee Brewers jersey.
The Brewers and the Cleveland Indians agreed to a deal for the reigning AL Cy Young on Sunday, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The newspaper reports the deal is contingent on paperwork being finished and the exchange of medical records.
Cleveland would get Double-A outfielder Matt LaPorta, who is hitting .288 with 20 homers and 66 RBIs in 84 games for Huntsville, and two other minor leaguers in return, according to the Journal Sentinel. The two other players do not include top prospects Alcides Escobar or Mat Gamel.
The Brewers wanted Sabathia, who rejected a $72 million, four-year extension from the Indians during spring training, on their pitching staff in time to get him two starts before the All-Star break, according to multiple media reports. Sabathia, who is 6-8 with a 3.83 ERA this season, could debut in Milwaukee against the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday.
Brewers general manager Doug Melvin told the Journal Sentinel on Saturday that a proposal was on table and he awaiting word from Indians GM Mark Shapiro.
"Mark said he'd be in touch with me," said Melvin. "I'm sure they've got to think through everything."
Laporta was scratched from Huntsville's lineup Sunday, another indication the deal was close.
Milwaukee, which hasn't made the playoffs since 1982, is second in National League standings behind the Chicago Cubs.
The Brewers have been considered the front-runner in the Sabathia sweepstakes. The Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays were among other teams vying for his services.

Good. Now the Yanks will sign him in the off season, and just give up cash and draft picks.

Nope. The Brewers need him, and CC is a good guy, and he's not gay, so he won't go to the Yankees.

He's the Sports Mogul Forums' scout. He is actually very intelligent (sarcasm). I mean... The kid... I mean scout, thinks that Mo, Jeter, and A-Rod aren't gonna be in the Hall of Fame. Kid really knows his stuff.
BTW... A-Rod just knocked one outta the park.
Red Sox - 0, Yankees - 1
Also, Joba is pitching; him with his low 2 ERA as a starter.

Re: C.C Sweeptakes over goes to Brewers
I wouldn't classify CC as being a good guy. He's always complained about the Twins. My mother doesn't like him, and my mother loves everyone! Does anyone really have anything negative and true to say about the Twins? Didn't think so.

Me too... I am ready for the Yanks to take back the division :p

Re: C.C Sweeptakes over goes to Brewers
I hope my Brew Crew re-signs him & isn't just renting him...I mean if they can afford to throw $10mil at gagne, surely they can throw some $ CC's way

I doubt they will be able to.
I mean, Prince Fielder will be due a Ryan Howard type raise soon, and the other youngsters will need a new contracts soon, no? They have glaring bullpen issues that they need to address, and they also may want to resign Sheets.
Who knows, though? Perhaps they will resign him.
-
Re: C.C Sweeptakes over goes to Brewers
Well, Gagne was just a one year deal, right? So that's a chunk of change, right there. Still, unless they can move another contract OUT, I don't think they can keep him AND keep Sheets AND extend some of their young guys. All depends on what they want to do.
Anyway, these young guys Cleveland got, are they any good at least?

Fielder will have to pick up his pace to get Howard kind of money. He's on pace for something like 35 Hr's. Gag-me making 10 mill. Turnblow is making over 3 mil that will be off the books. Cameron as well will be off the books. Hardy, Hart, & Weeks all go to Arbritration along with Fielder. But Hardy got his big raise last year. Hart will get one this year and Weeks is struggling so he probobably won't get much. We might be able to re-sign Sheets or Sabathia but I can't see Antanasio signing them both.

No chance. CC turned down 18 mil a year for four years. He ain't settling for less than 20 a year for at least 5 years...at a minimum. He'll be a Yankee...but don't worry, that says nothing about the unfair economics of baseball...every team has an equal chance to get him.....

Well, as far as I know, only 1 name has been released and that is Matt LaPorta.
Matt Laporta will be a top prospect next year, and should be ready in the next year or 2. He has very good power, and solid contact. Not a very good fielding 1B/OF, but has a very good offensive game.
I see a power potential of 35-40 HR's for him with a .280-.290 BA. I am not a scout, but this is from reading what other scouts think about him.

I believe we gave up
AA Matt Laporta and A 3B Taylor Green and A OF Lorenzo Cain.
Laporta will be good. He has alot of power but his defense is horrible. He'll most likely end up a DH. He'll prolly be in the majors before the seasons over. Green and Cain were rated the 13th & 17th best prospects in the Brewers system. I think we got a great deal. I thought we would've had to give up Gamel or Escobar. Even if Sabathia leaves, if we make the playoffs it will've been worth it. This is the 1st in my life the Brewers have ever made a move like this. It's pretty exciting.
-
Re: C.C Sweeptakes over goes to Brewers
In fact, many scouts see Matt LaPorta as a Pat Burrell type of player with slightly better contact.
-
Re: C.C Sweeptakes over goes to Brewers
2010 Brewers starting IF.
1B Matt Gamel
2B Rickie weeks
SS Alicides Escobar
3B Bill Hall
The trade also give us some insurance if Sheets gets hurt. I wonder who their going move out of the rotation. My guess is McDung.

Hmmm...while his bat sounds nice, the Indians already have Victor Martinez at catcher, who most people see moving to first at some point, and Jhonny Peralta, who is probably not long for shortstop, as he'd look better on a corner. I'd like to see SOMEONE who can field!

McClung is actually doing alright this season. Does he really suck that much to watch?
And I second the post that mentioned the Brewers might be able to sign Sheets or Sabathia, but not both. In my mind, Sabathia is the better bet due to Sheets' health problems. But either way, they'll have to overpay big for a long time.

I just read that it's Laporta and Green and someone else, but is NOT Lorenzo Cain or Alcides Escobar. Maybe the Brewers changed their mind about Mat Gamel?

That was a couple years ago. He's since proven to be a capable catcher. LaPorta can also play left field, where the Indians have been running out dreck.

According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the Brewers will send Matt LaPorta, Zach Jackson, Rob Bryson and a player to be named later in exchange for C.C. Sabathia.
-
Re: C.C Sweeptakes over goes to Brewers
First off....CC. is a nice pickup for the Brew Crew and they didn't give up a ton so they did a good job. It is alot for a rent-a-player but they will get some #1 picks back if he leaves.
As for them resigning him, as I've said before buyer beware!! I'd want nothing to do with this guy on a long term Zito type contract. That is why I truly hope the Yankees sign him. :D;)
On another note, its nice to hear Wie's perspective about this being exciting as the Brew Crew has for the first time in her life made a big move to get to the playoffs. In the northeast we are so spoiled......and its nice to see baseballs parity giving hope to other markets and allowing them to make this kind of trade. A truly GREAT thing for the game.

Re: C.C Sweeptakes over goes to Brewers
Yes HGM is correct although their is no official announcement yet It says in article that Green will most likely be the player to be named. Cleveland must've wanted another MLB ready talent. Jackson started a few games a couple years ago and showed some promise but he has been struggling since. I still think it's a good trade.

No he doesn't really suck to watch. But someone has to be moved out. based on performance it should be Suppan. But that won't happen. It's either Bush or McClung. Bush has been lights out 3 out of his last 4 starts and has alot better track record than McClung. That's why I figure McClung will go back to the BP.

I'm assuming you're a girl Wie....and I just love a chick who knows baseball. If you're not a girl, or of age......don't tell me. It would ruin it for me lol.

I think that it's less parity, and more hiring competent management. Look at Boston. For a very long time they threw money at the Sox and got nothing but second place and often worse. New ownership and management come in, bang, two titles. Look at the Yankees of late, piling money on older FA's and getting no titles.
Teams like KC develop nice players, and refuse to put the income back on the field to retain them and make more money. Hence, they suck.
The old saying is absolute truth in baseball, "you have to spend money to make money".

Re: C.C Sweeptakes over goes to Brewers
buying their way into the playoffs, they will never sign both sheets and CC plus all the other young talent they have.
They really need more than CC, they have one of the worst team batting averages, team OPB and one of the worst fielding teams in baseball. The only way they score is with the home run not exactly playoff winning baseball.

Ah but it gives them leverage though in the off season either they can sign Sheets or Sabathia whereas before Sheets was in a monopolistic situation as being their only ace - now they can say offer 15 mill to each & see who bites...also if NEITHER sign they end up with 4 1sts in the next draft (plus their own)

Yeah like the Cubs know so much about playoff winning baseball:rolleyes:

You missed the most important word - "You have to spend money WISELY to make money" - otherwise the Mets would be playing the Yankees in this years' World Series (& last years' too!) ;)

Re: C.C Sweeptakes over goes to Brewers
Just heard that it was down to the Brewers and Dodgers.
Also heard that the Dodgers deal included Matt Kemp, but they didn't make the deal because they are also looking for a short stop.
Now, I agree not trading kemp for 4 months of C.C. is a good idea. Now, if we trade Kemp for Eckstein or Jack Wilson, there's gonna be a problem
-
Re: C.C Sweeptakes over goes to Brewers
^ link?
I have a hard time believing LA would trade Kemp now, for a 3 month rental of Sabathia. That may have been what Cleveland was asking for, which is why the deal didn't happen. But there's a big difference between asking for something and getting it. I can ask for a 100% raise from my boss, but I know I'm not getting it.

Re: C.C Sweeptakes over goes to Brewers
it's official Sabathia to Milwaukee for LaPorta, LHP Zach Jackson and prospect RHP Rob Bryson and player to be names which sounds like it'll be 3B Taylor Green

Re: C.C Sweeptakes over goes to Brewers
Brewers GM Doug Melvin announcing the deal: "We're going for it." Those 4 words mean alot to all Brewers fans. 26 years of misery. As much as Cubs fans whine about 100 years of losing at least they had periodic playoff appearances. The Brewers have had 1 winning season in the last 15 years. The only team with a longer playoff drought is Montreal/Washington. And thats not really the same cause it has been two cities. I was knee high to a grasshopper in '82. Don't remember it. But the atmosphere in Milwaukee here is electric. The team has been playing great now this trade. Tuesday's game has sold out already C.C. has a press confrenece scheldued for 6pm.

darn right. San Fran needs to rebuild like Milwaukee did after the Seligs were ousted. Since then they've became a better team. I'd like to see the Giants have a winning season.
-
Re: C.C Sweeptakes over goes to Brewers
Well, we have seen plenty of winning seasons, what we need is a championship winning season.
We need a couple of bats for that though. :(
