Joakim Soria has 23 saves, a 41:9 K:BB ratio and a 1.22 ERA.
He has blown only 1 save in the season.
Holliday made it as a reserve
Soria is amazing and Ludwick has been great this season too. I think Brian Wilson was a Beach Boy and Navarro is leading the pitching staff of the best team is baseball.
Soria's been a top closer. Wilson has been awesome, and Navarro has possibly been the best catcher in baseball. Ludwick certainly has been no slouch, either, though.
I don't think that Manny has really deserved it, though... I mean, he has sucked the last couple of weeks and his average is down to .279 and his SLG is down under .500. I also thought that maybe Mussina should've made it. I also think that Giambi should be in.
Why Joe Crede too? He was a very bad pick as well...
And Cliff Lee over CC?
they arent that bad

Aaron Cook? He's OK, but his manager is clearly playing favorites (Cook over Santana and over Peavy?)
Sherrill sucks, there's another reason that this 1-player per team rule is bad.
To be honest, Billy Wagner is pitching pretty poorly too.
Cook is 11-5, a 3.37 ERA, in his last start he threw a 79 complete game shutout.
In the first inning today he gives up 2 hits and still only threw 5 PITCHES in the inning.
every starting pitchers record on the AL Staff is above .500
I still think that John Maine should be in as a Final Vote candidate.
he's not a candiate vote David Wright i think Rick Ankiel desevered a shot 5th in outfield when voting closed ludwick was 13th
Billy Wagner has been pitching badly? His ERA is 1.85!
I think that each team getting a representative is good, except for the fact that the game actually means something now(which is terribly unfair).
This year's teams actually seem pretty good. Most years there are one or two guys who really don't deserve to be there, but I can't find any beyond Sherill this year.
The Final Vote ballots are as such:
AL-
Jermaine Dye
Jason Giambi
Jose Guillen
Evan Longoria
Brian Roberts
Dye might have the best numbers, but Longoria is close. I think he'll win.
NL-
Pat Burrell
Corey Hart
Carlos Lee
Aaron Rowand
David Wright
Hart and Wright have the best numbers, but with the game in NYC, there is no way that a dude from Milwaukee beats out Wright.
Okay, I didn't realize how bad Varitek's numbers were. Geez, .219 and 7 homers in the ASG? I don't know why they needed 3 catchers, but guys like AJ Pierzynski and Gerald Laird are more deserving.
By the way, does anybody know who will be starting on the mound for the two teams?
they didnt anounce it i think the manager deceices on july 15th
Varitek is the worst choice here.
However, all I see in this thread is a lot of complaining just because, without any real justification to back it up.
'Tek is great. He deserves it.
There are 16 other catchers in the American League with a higher VORP than Jason Varitek. 16. Say what you want about VORP. Use any metric though. Jason Varitek has sucked this year.
I don't think it's just about the stats though. It's about the fan favorites, and that is something Jason Varitek is and Dioner Navarro is not.
Did someone just question Joakim Soria as an All-Star candidate?
Fail.
I suggest you watch him pitch sometime and take note of how he makes hitters look like monkeys with his curveball. Soria is an absolute freak.
However..everything about the AS game is a complete joke. It's stupid the way they pick the players and stupid that it means anything at all. The managers should pick the entire team and it shouldn't mean a **** thing. In fact..I wish they'd just get rid of it or play the AS game after the year is over or something.
the players voted in varitek
Also, I think it was leaked that Webb and Lee will be the starting pitchers.
Jason Varitek is a HOFer? Joakim Soria is not deserving to be an All-Star?
LAY OFF THE CRAZY PILLS!!
On reputation, Varitek is a HOF. On statistics, he's basically an average hitter (note the 101 OPS+). I would not call him a "surefire" HOF - he'd be very lucky to get in, unless HOF voters ignore his statistics.
for those of you who have a problem with Brian Wilson - The only thing bad about him is his ERA and I am pretty sure its high from his non save op outings. He allows walks but he always seems to get out of hit. Just look at his lack of blown saves/losses. He has really been good on a team that isn't.
Santana imo does not really have all star numbers this year.
My only problem with the all stars is that its nearly half the starters were BOS/NYY. Thats retarded imo.
On reputation? Don't think so. "he'd be very lucky to get in"... Ya **** right! Varitek shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as the HOF. I don't think the Jorge Posada will get in, but his numbers are almost twice as good as Varitek's career numbers and he's won more rings.
