Orioles Control First Place
The Baltimore Orioles are the real deal this season. They have jumped out to a two game lead in the American League. We are only 9 games in to the season, but at 7-2 the Orioles are looking very strong. The Orioles are the second best hitting team based on average and also hold the second best team ERA in the league. Early on in the season John McGraw looks his managerial skills are up to the task. He also looks as if he could be the team MVP when all is said and done.
The one through 5 hitters are all putting up solid numbers. First through four are all hitting over .400 at this point early in the season and Mike Donlin has three home runs through 9 games. If he keeps this up he will be breaking the all time home run record before the half way point in the season.
The Orioles began the month by taking 2 of 3 from the Washington Senators. This was a big series in order to gain and even retain the fans from the local area. The Orioles scored 17 runs in the three games and appeared to have the clearly dominant team.
They followed that up with a sweep of the Blues and then headed out to Milwaukee to take on the Brewers. The Orioles may have a 7-2 record on the season but they also have the dubious pleasure of being the only team to lose to the Brewers so far this year.
Donlin Out For Almost a Month

Donlin Goes Down In Win
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...n_Baseball.jpg
Following an 8-6 victory over the Boston Americans it was reported that OF star Mike Donlin would be out for 26 days or more with a chipped knee. This is a big hit for the Orioles as they lose probably their best offensive player on the team. Donlin was off to one of the best starts that baseball had ever seen. He was hitting .422 with 3 home runs and 10 RBI through 10 games and was on pace to shatter almost any offensive record that you could dream of.
Birdie Cree will take over in RF for the duration of Donlin's injury. Cree is a less than desirable replacement for such a talented player. Cree will be moved down to the number eight spot in the batting order and won't be counted on to produce much offense.
McGraw's Comments
"Donlin will be missed. You never want to lose a bat like that in your lineup. Cree ain't all that good but what are you supposed to do when that is the best that you got? We was pretty much expecting something like this to happen. He's had a history of getting hurt. We figured we would ride him as long as we could and deal with it when it happened. We were hoping that it would take longer than 10 games."

Bovey Beans McGinnity
http://www.cbl-baseball.com/mogul/howell.jpg
Americans pitcher Dallas Bovey beaned Joe McGinnity in yesterdays game. This was the second day in a row that an incident such as this had happened. The game before Mike Donlin was also hit by a pitch that "got away" from an American's pitcher. The game was out of hand by the 5th inning as the Orioles had a commanding lead 7 to 1. McGinnity came to the plate with runners on first and second with a 6 run lead. On the first pitch he attempted to bunt. This wasn't taken well by the Americans who were not pleased with the Orioles attempts to score even more runs.
On the next pitch Bovey beaned McGinnity square in the back. The stadium was quiet for a moment and all thought it was simply going to blow over. Then just as things were though to be under control the Orioles bench cleared and the field turn in to a bar brawl.
Pitcher Harry Howell was the only one to come away with any serious injury. He chipped his knee cap "on Bovey's chin" as he put it.
Howell's Comments
They hit Donlin yesterday and then they hit McGinnity. That **** just isn't right. You don't play the game that way. We want to win, and if you think that 6 runs is enough then you must not have much confidence in your team. I'm sure they were frustrated after the *** kicking that we gave them the day before, but that ain't no excuse to try and hurt someone.
Everyone was kind of shocked that he did it with such purpose. Everyone out there knew he meant it. We all just stood and watched and when John (McGraw) said "get 'em", we did just that.
McGraw's Comments
I told you before that I'm not out there to make friends. You hit one of my guys and we can chalk that up to an accident, but then you hit my pitcher square in the back. We all knew what that was about.
Yeah, I told my boys to get 'em. I don't see nothing wrong with that. We have to defend our guys. We don't want the whole league to think they can throw at us and nothing is going to happen.
Well what happened to Howell is unfortunate, but I don't think he has any problem with the way that I handled things. The league might, and we will have to just wait and see on that one.

Standing: First (2 game lead)
Injuries: Mike Donlin (13 days), Harry Howell (14 days)
Baltimore Still Holds First
The Orioles remain in first place despite being without Donlin and Howell. They maintain the second best team batting average in the league and now have the best team ERA in the American League. Philadelphia and Boston sit tied for second place. Philly has won three in a row while Boston has been struggling and have lost two in a row.
The Orioles swept the last series with the Americans and then proceeded to take two of three from the Brewers at home. They then dropped two of three to the Americans and bounced back to take two of three from the cross town rivals, the Senators.
Next on the agenda is the Cleveland Blues. The Orioles swept the only other series that they have played against them this year and are optimistic going in to this series as well.
Orioles Streak The Wrong Way
May 7th, 1901
Baltimore Drops To 5th Place
After a great start to the season the Orioles have really taken a step back to start the month of May. After ending April in first place, everything was looking bright in Baltimore. McGraw was playing well and he was winning games. His stock was climbing fast. Then came the injuries. Donlin went down, and then Howell went down from a brawl that has been a black eye for the Orioles ever since.
The Orioles haven't won a game in May. They have lost their last seven in a row and have dropped from first place in the American League all the way down to fifth. They are only one game above .500 right now and I think it is safe to say that McGraw's stock has plummeted substantially. He may be in risk of losing his managerial position if things don't turn around rather quickly.
The team ERA has ballooned to over 5 runs per game now, which is a drastic change from the 3.89 that it was at the end of April. The worst showing came on May 2nd when they were embarrassed by the Cleveland Blues. Cleveland put up 21 runs to the Orioles' 3. Baltimore then followed that up with three straight losses to the now first place Detroit Tigers.
McGraw's Comments
**** right I'm pissed off about things. We haven't been playing baseball. I don't know what we have been doing out there, but I sure as **** don't call it baseball. They should be thinking about removing me, I'm fine with that. When a team like this goes on a losing streak of seven games, some times you just have to make a change. I know that I'm doing what I can to turn this thing around, but whatever they do is fine with me. We have to win and if that means that I can't be the manager anymore then I'm fine with that.
Never really seen an O's dynasty around, this is awesome.
From 1st to 5th in 7 days? Ouch.
Hopefully, the American League stays bunched enough for you to get off the schnide and back on the right track.
Any prospects we ought to keep our eyes open for?
Well, you know I'm likin' this... :)

Orioles Somewhat Right The Ship
From 14-13 to 26-22. It might not have been amazing but it has put them back on the right track so to speak. For now John McGraw's job as a manager might be safe. The Orioles still boast the best hitting team in the American League, the second best pitching staff and are the leaders in defensive average at this point in the season. Key injuries really limited them earlier and with a weak bench there wasn't much that they could do to offset the loss of players like Mike Donlin and Harry Howell. McGraw did the best that he could to motivate them and it seems to have worked slightly. Donlin has come back and is hitting over .300 and playing a flawless right field. 21 year old catcher Roger Bresnahan was getting some playing time in CF and was making the most of it. In 17 games he was hitting over .400. Roger however is now on the DL with a torn rotator cuff and should be out another two weeks. The pitching staff has been solid with a team ERA of just 4.33.
Comments from Uncle Robbie (Wilbert Robinson)
Anyone who thinks that McGraw should not be managing this team is off his rocker. There is no better man for this job. He can't help the fact that we played like little girls for a stretch. He's righted this ship and we are back on the right track. Baseball is a tough game and is to be played by tough men. If a little 6 game losing streak is going to bother anyone on this team then I think they might be in the wrong line of work.

Baltimore Creeps Up Standings
Baltimore has quietly crept to within striking distance of first place Detroit. They currently sit only one game behind the American League leaders. With a record of 13-7 in their last 20 games, the Orioles certainly look to be playing quality ball. The hitting has never stopped and the pitching has apparently figured out what they were doing wrong.
Robinson Injured Duck Pin Bowling?
Duck Pin bowling? Never heard of it? Well it has become quite the popular bar game. Wilbert Robinson and manager John McGraw developed the idea last year and it has been catching on quite quickly. Rumor has it that starting catcher Wilbert Robinson has been injured during a game of duck pin with John McGraw, played at the bar the two of them own in downtown Baltimore. At current time this is nothing more than rumor, but with the way that these fellas like to drink and play games, we all know how likely this one is. Robinson is reportedly only out 2 games with this unspecified injury.
Amateur Draft
The first ever MLB amateur draft was held earlier today. The Baltimore Orioles received the first overall pick in the draft based on team order alphabetically. With that pick the Orioles drafted pitcher Art Fromme. Others drafted by the Baltimore club included;
SP Russ Ford
CF Bill O'Hara
RF Chief Wilson
P Hub Knolls
SS Joe Cassidy
The cream of the crop appears to be Fromme and Ford. Both already have MLB quality pitches but they each have some things that need to be worked on. Both pitchers lack the amount of control desired to be a quality starting pitcher in the league, but both of them have good movement on their pitches and get the ball to the plate in a hurry. Fromme might want to develop a third pitch and Ford's third could still use some attention. Both of these guys should be very effective pitchers for the Orioles for many years. Fromme appears to be almost ready for the majors and could see some time later in the year. If he doesn't then I would certainly expect him to get a chance to crack the rotation in 1902.
O'Hara and Wilson should get some action in the next year or two as well. Currently CF and LF could be open if things work out for them. Steve Brodie has been playing extremely well and if that keeps up it will be hard for either one of them to get playing time in CF. LF is somewhat weak at the current time and with the way that Mike Donlin goes down with injury both of them could see some significant playing time in the next few years.

Orioles Best Statistically But Second Overall
Just three days before Independence Day the Orioles sit five and a half games back of the Detroit Tigers. It seems that no matter how well the Orioles seem to play the Tigers just keep on winning. During the month of June they climbed to within two games of the lead before falling back down to five again before the close of the month. The Boston Americans seem to have the Orioles' number as they have yet to lose a series to Baltimore this month. Just when it looks as if the division lead may be within their grasps, the Americans come calling and everything goes right down the crapper. Baltimore maintains the highest team batting average and the lowest team ERA but still cannot find their way to the top of the standings.
Brodie Leads the Way
http://cbl-baseball.com/mogul/brodie.jpg
CF Steve Brodie, who some thought might be on his way out, has been the offensive leader for the Orioles this season. Currently he leads the team in batting average at .388 and runs scored with 62. Brodie isn't a flashy player but he is gritty. He has great speed which makes him dangerous on the base paths and he has a knack for gunning down runners from the outfield.
McGraw's Comments
I don't know what to tell you. We have done everything that we can to get to shoe **** Tigers and it just seems like they always win. No matter how bad they play they always win. Right now it seems as if our scouting department is coming up a little short at times (+-8). That is something that we are certainly going to have to devote some more time and money to in the coming months and seasons if we are going to compete for the division title.
