Dickay...and others who decry small ball. Here's how it works for me in BM.
As mentioned, I operate the "Canajun Ehs", mostly in the PBP menu.
When pitching, I use "Pitch by Pitch"
When at bat, I revert to "Manager" mode, until I've either seen the opposing starter off, or until he exceeds his pitch-count, at which time, I'll opt for remaining in that mode, if it has proven productive in the game so far, or, if the hits in that mode have been few, I'll revert to "pitch by pitch" whilst batting, in the hope of exploiting a tired starter, or a new reliever, before he picks up his "rhythm"
In playing a game per day in this fashion for the past few months, I've come to realise that the Ehs' hitters have a tendency to:-
(1) Leave men on base.
(2) Hit into double-plays.
To overcome these bad habits, I have evolved the following tactics:
My lead-off man gets on...with the next guy at the plate, I then select "Run & Hit"...not so much to steal a base - altho imo, this tactic is more effective than either "Hit & Run" or "Steal 2nd" in getting the runner to 2nd - as to avoid the batter hitting into the DP.
If I find myself with a man at second, with nobody out, I select "bunt for hit"
If I find myself at 3rd with less than 2 out, I select "bunt for hit"
Given my hitters' "inherent problems" -inability to drive in runs; tendency to hit into DPs - this "small ball" strategy works for me, as a BM GM...given a real-life coach with similar problems, I don't see why it wouldn't work for him.
Sorry Ronger, I didn't read your whole post............i really don't care how it works in a baseball simulation game. We're talking real life 'small ball' here.
As far as yankee hater goes........how am I being silly?? Thats what they said during the broadcast!!!!!!! Did you watch it????
You know dang well I believe there is more to the game than statistics, and there is a time and place to drop a bunt or hit & run (and with Arod up it isn't that time or place lol, but i'm not getting into that at the moment). But to say a team 'plays' small ball is ludicrous. There's no such thing. It's just an excuse for a team that hits poorly, and because you can't explain your thought process don't hide behind the 'i'm not going to explain it' **** lol. As I stated, there's a reason why the NL is the league where 'small ball' is used more often....it's because pitchers can't hit!! Small ball is not a philosophy or a game strategy. The Blue Jays didn't go into yesterdays game trying to 'manufacture' runs by bunting and stealing bases. When the opportunity arises they'll do so, just as a power hitting team will.
But if you listen to the ***** yankee broadcasters, the blue jays are such experts at 'small ball' one would think they caused the balk and errors?!
His point was that those silly situations were being called smallball by the media. And that supports his opinion that "smallball teams" are just a creation of the media, and a term used to describe teams that don't hit well.
I'm not stirring any pot. If you disagree with what dickay is saying, it'd be nice of you to explain why, instead of just calling him silly.Quote:
Now stop stirring the pot, you're supposed to moderate - not instigate.
And does any follow that as an overall philosophy of how to play ALL THE TIME?
NO. All teams do that when it's called for.
And that is what dickay is saying. He's not saying "smallball" doesn't exist. He's saying that teams don't "try" to play smallball all, or most, of the time. They use it, for the most part, when it's called for.
I agree with that........though i would go further and just throw the term 'small ball' out of the baseball dictionary altogether because it's used in such rediculous situation such as yesterdays game.
Maybe, back in the stoneage of baseball there were teams that felt they should bunt and run all the time? I dont' know........but this terminology is now used to claim teams use it as a philosophy, and it's just a poor way of saying they can't hit. It irates me to hear a team getting props for being a 'small ball' team.
Really? I'd love to see proof of that. I think thats more of a generalization because they've been soft hitting mid market at best teams (at least for MINN anyhow) for awhile now, and people have grown accustomed to announcers overemphasizing every time they move a runner over or god forbid score a run because of a passed ball after a stolen base.
I watch Minn. all the time....I don't see any difference in philosophy in the way they play than the Sox. There is just an untrue opinion out there that they play differently, and it's driven by poor media coverage trying to find positive in a weak hitting team.
As for LAA, they have had alot of team speed, and probably steal more bases than alot of teams. Thats not a small ball philosophy.......have you ever seen Vlad swing? Nothing small ball about it. Other than him they just don't hit alot of homers so again they get slapped with the small ball label.
I would be my paycheck players HATE being told they play for a small ball team.
