I am screwed out of the WC:mad:
I'm pretty sure Mogul plays a round-robin in the event of multiple ties like this.
wow... how'd you manage to get a three way tie?
:)
yes... if the yanks had not tied then there would be no 163rd game. Detroit and Royals are basicly playing for their division. once that game is tied the loser has a worse record. Only time there would be more is if say the sox tied the yanks then the yanks and sox would play each other and KC would play DET. the 2 losers would then be tied for the WC and woudl play a 164th game!!!
That blows...
That's not how it works IRL.
Enlighten us, please. :)

Three teams with same record
In the event three teams finish with the same record, and two of them are tied for first place, the two teams in the same division would play a tiebreaker Monday for the division title. The loser of that game would then play a wild-card tiebreaker Tuesday against the team from the other division.
Yup, it's working as designed.
That does make more sense. Why should they be penalized for losing the playoff. The wildcard is supposed to be decided on the regular season record, so it would only make sense for the loser of the first game to have to play the other team.
So, in BM, in this scenario, the Yankees just get a free pass into the postseason? And the two teams tied for their division have to engage in a playoff game, with the victor advancing as division winner, and the loser is just s.o.l.? If this is how its designed to work... then its a bad design.
I can only hope that the original poster is incorrect, and the Yankees actually won their division. This just seems like a serious deficiency to me. I think I will sim a few seasons to determine if this is actually programmed into the game.
ok, I'm done, and jshaw is right. The game just screws him out of a chance to win the wild card after he loses the divisional playoff game. Specifically, I have Phi winning the East at 102-60, and Col in the West at 87-75. The Mets are second in the East at 89-73. The Central is a tie, Chi and Stl both at 89-73. So, as in the initial posting, the Central is in doubt, as is the wild card.
NYM 89-73
CHC 89-73
STL 89-73
In the game, the Cubs and Cards play a one game playoff, which the Cubs win, so they take the division at 90-73. No problem so far. In MLB, the Cardinals would now be required to play the Mets to determine the WC winner. However, in BM, the Cards have now been eliminated (at 89-74) and the Mets get a free pass, and get the WC at 89-73.
Thats a very poor conclusion to the season, and is a real flaw in the game. Another good reason to play only historical seasons, before they had all this wild card nonsense.
1995 Wildcard and AL west. This is a true story BTW.
So unless the rules have changed, since 1995... What BM does it correctly.
Mariners, Angels and Yankees were tied on the last day of the season.
Mariners under the Big Unit and Luis Sojo inside the park Grand Slam beat former Mariner Mark Langston and the angels 9-1 (Mariners go the playoffs, after being down 13 games in august).
Angels are knocked out of the playoffs (they are 1 game back of the Mariners and 1/2 game back of the yankees) ... Mariners Win the AL west, and Yankees win the Wildcard.
The Mariners end up beating the Yankees in the divisional series 3games to 2 on the bat of Edgar Martinez famous Double with Junior Sliding home for the winning run.
Ah the good ol' days...
What am I looking at in this PIC?
In 1995, the regular season ended on Sunday, Oct 1, with the Yankees at 79-65, and Seattle and the Angels at 78-66. New York won the WC at that point. Mariners and Angels played the one game playoff on Monday, Oct 2, to determine the West division winner... with the loser going home.
hmm... Dang, I thought it was a 3 way tie all these years...my bad ;)
That was only the third "regular season playoff" game in AL history. In all three cases, the team that caught the leader and forced the playoff on the final day, lost the playoff game. Seattle blew a 2 game lead with 2 games left... the Angels won both their games... and then Seattle held on to win the decider, as BB observed.
Seattle did catch the Angels then went ahead of them for a few days...the funny part is that in August they were 13 games back..so in reality they were the team from behind... but in terms of who tied who, the Angels won and Seattle Lost.
I could've sworn that's NOT the case in MLB. The "playoff" game between the two teams for the division is actually considered a regular season game, thus the LOSER of that game finishes a half game behind the team not involved in the division playoff. I have searched MLB.COM and can't find a definitive answer, though I did see the post on (was it Fox sports of CBS, not sure). It's just those sites can make mistakes too, (and God knows I'm probably wrong on this), but I could've sworn that in the case of three teams tied and two are fighting for the division, they play a one game "playoff", but because it's considered a regular season game, the lose is left a half game behind the third team.
Man, I know I didn't explain that right, I'm great at butchering the english language.
It may be the way that MLB does it, but it doesn't make it right. :(
I just did 10 searches at MLB.COM and everytime I put in "tiebreaker" I get results for all of the previous tiebreak games played, and then when I put in "Tiebreaker Rules" I get thousands of hits with the word Rules in it. I can't figure out searches at all, so then I actually typed the quotation marks and "Tiebreaker Rules" and I get zero hits. I actually sent MLB a "Fan Feedback" email on this, hoping for an answer, but I won't hold breath since I don't have an account at MLB.COM. But I did browse the official rulebook, and for the most part, that deals with individual games not division standings. I'm gonna go look at that in more depth though. This is interesting because I always thought that playoff game was considered a regular season game but that post on Fox sports (or was CBS sports?) seems to contradict that.
Google is your best friend OFG.
Accoriding to Baseball Reference, here is the official rule.
Quote:
Scenario #5: If three Clubs in a League are tied with identical winning percentages at the end of the championship season and two of those tied Clubs are from the same Division and are also tied for first place in that Division and the third tied Club has the highest winning percentage among the second-place Clubs in the remaining two Divisions, the Division Champion shall first be determined by a one-game playoff on Monday, September 29. Any playoff games played to determine a Division champion shall not count in determining which Clubs are deemed tied for a Wild Card designation. Clubs that were originally tied with a Club or Clubs for a Wild Card designation shall still be considered tied.
Example of Scenario #5: The Houston Astros, St. Louis Cardinals and Florida Marlins all have identical winning percentages at the end of the championship season. The Astros and Cardinals are tied for first place in the NL Central and the Marlins have the highest winning percentage among the second-place Clubs from the NL East and NL West. The Astros and Cardinals would play a one-game playoff on Monday, September 29. The winner shall be declared the Division Champion. Despite the loss, the losing Club would still be considered tied with the Marlins for the lead in the NL Wild Card. Those two Clubs would play a one-game playoff on Tuesday, September 30. The winner of that game shall be declared the Wild Card.
not saying my team would have beat the Yanks since I threw my only decent P in Verlander against the Royals
but that was 163 play by play manager games down the drain to get screwed by the game not being set up right
kind of frustrating :D:D
Well, that sucks, jshaw. Unfortunately, it's how BM breaks ties like that. You would think that BM would mirror MLB in this regard, since the real life scenario seems to be quite fair. First, settle the division, then, the 2 WC teams play a playoff. Hmmm.
Dude that sucks with 163 play-by-play....
Thanks JCB, but it doesn't seem to matter what tool I use to search (I've used Google, Forum Searches Site Searches), I just ALWAYS either get 0 hits or thousands. I just don't know how to computer searches, I'm waiting for the book "Computer Searches For Dummies."
Speaking of waiting, I just got done two hours of mowing the lawn (whew, talk about a sight, my old fat a$$ pushing that mower, sweating, gasping, wheezing, jouncing and jiggling, boy I hope my neighbors aren't big contributors to YouTube :D), I didn't here from MLB.COM. So, thanks for clearing that up, another example of me being wrong all these years.
