Nope. If your posts are deleted, then their gone. Of course, 99% of the time deleted posts are "soft deleted", meaning that moderators and administrators can still see them. If that's the case then those posts can be restored.
However, what's been going on here is that the posts are being "physically deleted" when Dee deletes a sub-forum. There's no turning back those deletions (aside from doing a forum restoration from backup). I wouldn't worry about it though, since 99.9% of those posts are a year old or more (and those that aren't are just post padding posts anyway...).
Wouldn't auto pruning have this type of effect. When posts are auto deleted your post count would go back down. It would make more sense if this were the case because of how many people were effected by this.
yea, but there's no auto-pruning going on. Dee has reacently been going in and deleting some old BMO forums. What caused this particular thread is that there was a bad PHP script that was aparently running in an infinate loop (or something like it) and the forums crashed.
Why does everyone keep complaining about post counts and then, say not that I care or shrug? If you truly didn't care, you wouldnt post in the first place :-)

Personally, the only reason that I care about post counts is because everyone else seems to. It's like this on just about every forum that I've been a member of, although it seems to be a bit more out of control here then in other places that I've been. The competitive atmosphere that's generated by post padding creates problems in and of itself. Then, When something happens which requires board maintenance and post counts are messed up there's always a huge uproar about it too. Instead of Dee, Ian, or Clay being able to correct the problem when they have the time to do so they are then required to take time away from their normal (and far more important) tasks in order to address the problem in an emergency atmosphere.
Anyway, there are several good web pages out there about successful community building. The danger of allowing post counts to dominate a scene is a common problem that is addressed all of the time. Type "post count" in Google and you'll receive a billion hits.
