Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
1972 Preview
Things certainly look promising for the 1972 season. The offense is starting to come in to it's own and looks like they will certainly be able to put up some runs this season. If the pitching can hold its own then the Padres should surely win some games. I'm thinking we might even win more than we lose for the first time in team history.
Sisk is starting to decline in his old age, but it looks like Randy Jones might be ready to turn in to that pitcher that everyone thought he would be. Mike Caldwell is poised to have another great season as he starts off as the ACE of the staff in every sense of the word.
Newcomer Jerry Bell will be playing his first full season for the Padres and we expect big things from him. The bullpen is still a bit shaky, but should be able to hold up enough to win some games for us.
Two rookies will find themselves in the starting lineup for us this year. With the release of Al Ferrara and Ollie Brown, OF's Johnny Grubb and Dwight Evans will get their chance to shine. Both should be just fine at the major league level.
Jerry Morales continues to get better and this should be a big year for him now that he has some real protection behind him. Rico still anchors the middle of the lineup and Nate Colbert finds himself a little bit further down in the lineup this year.

Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
1972 All Star Break
The season has been good to San Diego thus far. We are playing far better than anyone could have imagined. The team is currently in first place. This doesn't seem to be any kind of fluke either.
The Padres have a 7 game lead over Houston and have gone 8-2 in their last 10 games. Johnny Grubb is playing spectacular ball and Dwight Evans leads the team in home runs at the all star break. At this point both of them have to be in the running for rookie of the year.
The pitching staff hasn't been what we expected though. Randy Jones still struggles and many believe it is because he doesn't have that one dominant pitch that he can throw when he HAS to get someone out.

Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
1972 Review
The Padres finished 1972 over .500. This was the first time in team history that this has happened. San Diego found themselves in first place for a long time during the season and held an 8 game lead over Houston at one point. The youth and inexperience caught up with them and they subsequently lost the lead. It was a disappointment not to win the division but finishing 85-77 was very promising for the future.
The young guys played well during the year. Johnny Grubb batted over .300 and Dwight Evans showed some impressive power. Mike Caldwell continued to pitch well and Randy Jones is getting better every day. His stints in the minors appear to be over.
When most of the veterans were let go to begin the year there were some doubts in San Diego as to what direction the team was headed. GM James Barr silenced those critics though with the 1972 season and hopes to continue the progress.
So far the Padres have been a profitable team as well as a progressive team. Rumor is that a new stadium, or at least upgrades to the current stadium might be in the works.

Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
Contract Negotiations
SP Mike Caldwell
This was an easy call. You just don't let a guy like this walk away from the team. He has been everything that we could have hoped for and more. He has gotten better every year and shows no signs of slowing down.
C Ron Slocum
Ron is a valuable bench player and we were able to sign him to an extension at the league minimum. We couldn't pass that chance up.
P Randy Jones
The former face of the franchise, Randy has gotten better over the last two years and is finally starting to show why he was so touted coming up as a rookie in the majors. Randy still has some confidence issues but he has been working through those recently.
RP Jerry Bell
We picked up bell in a trade with the Brewers and he has been one of our most stable bullpen arms.
SP Tommie Sisk
Tommie's days had passed and his large salary was not one that we could hold on to without getting the production back. Sisk will be missed in the clubhouse and everything he did for the early days of the San Diego Padres will always be appreciated.
P Dick Selma
Selma was well liked but he failed to put up the numbers that the Padres were looking for. He has recently spent time down in AAA as well to try and get his "groove" back so to speak.
P Billy McCool
Billy was just making too much money for his talent level. His abilities had really started to fall lately and the Padres just grew impatient with him.
P Al McBean
Pretty much the same as McCool. GM James Barr isn't one to put up with dead space on the roster. These two were just sucking up payroll and there really was no reason to let it continue.
2B Horace Clarke
Clarke has picked up the pace recently and was rewarded with a new contract. He now becomes one of the highest paid Padres. Clarke will continue to set the pace for the offense.
3B Bob Bailey
Bob has been one of the most consistent offensive players since we singed him and he is very valuable to the offense. Van Kelly is waiting in the wings, but it still a few more years before he is ready. Locking up Bailey just seemed like the right thing to do.
P Gary Gentry
Gary is young and had a pretty good year last year. Teams are always in the market for good pitching and when you find some in free agency that is young and you can afford it, you have to jump at it.

I have to admit, I just started reading your dynasty and absolutely love it. It's interesting to see another Padres dynasty too, as I have started one in 1970.

1973 All Star Break
Mike Caldwell has arrived ladies and gentlement. The man is on fire and just keeps getting better for us each and every year. At this rate Randy Jones may just become his trusty sidekick when all is said and done.
Once again we find ourselves in the driver's seat come all star time. We currently lead the division, but by only two games.
The team pitching has been amazing. We currently have a team ERA of 3.88 which is much better than we had expected to have this year. The starting rotation is still lacking a solid number 5 that we can count on day in and day out, and we could use one more arm in the pen to really solidify our chances. We hope to pick one up before the trade deadline and if not we will more than likely sign one in free agency when the time comes around.
Batting average is down a little and there have been some minor changes to the lineup. SS Rico Petrocelli has yet to find his stroke this year, and Dave Hilton has taken over duties at 1B after replacing Nate Colbert due to an injury. Dave has been playing so well that he has yet to give up his starting role.
The following Padres were also named to the NL all star team:

Let's hope that the Pads can hang on this year. It seems that your pitching will keep the other team from scoring, now if only those bats start to heat up...

Yep, we made a great run at it, but came up just a little bit short. Read below for the 1973 recap.

Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
1973 Review
Many thought this was the year of the Padres. Johnny Grubb and Dwight Evans were coming off very impressive rookie seasons and the pitching staff looked to be one of the strongest in the league. There were a few short comings on offense, but we were hoping that we could overcome them with the strong pitching.
In the end the Padres came up just a little bit short of the post season. Mike Caldwell posted one of the most impressive seasons for a pitcher that the Padres will likely see for a while. Randy Jones finally showed what all the hype was about and is becoming a very solid number two guy in the rotation. Mike Corkins was one of the league's best closers and for the most part the rest of the pen was very solid.
A few players that had been putting up big numbers decided to take the 1973 season off though, it seemed. Rico Petrocelli had an off season compared to what he had been doing. This was disappointing considering this was the best Padres lineup that we had ever seen coming in to the season.
Nate Colbert finds himself on the bench behind Dave Hilton. Hilton has proven that he can hit for average and gets on base a lot more often then the slugging Colbert. 24 year old Jerry Morales lead the team in homers and Rico, despite batting in the .230's lead the team in RBI with 98.
The 1973 season has come and gone, but we made progress again and will be back in 1974. Just wait til next year!!

Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
Contract Negotiations
CF Jerry Morales
Not even a question. He has been one of our best hitters since we called him up. There was no way that we were going to let him test the FA waters.
3B Van kelly
Van had a rough start with the Padres, but that wasn't his fault. He was forced to start at thrid for us and he wasn't ready. Time has worked in his favor and he has been able to learn some valuable things on the bench behind Bob Bailey. He is a great pinch hitter.
RP Mike Corkins
Mike continues to be one of the best closers in the league. The price was right to locke him up for 4 more years.
P Dick Kelley
He was getting old and not putting up the numbers that we needed. He has been tooling around in the minors for the last few years as well.
P Tom Dukes
Tom had been a big part of the pen, but he was getting up in age and his skills were diminished to say the least.
P Steve Arlin
Steve had great potential but he just wasn't reaching it in San Diego. We wish him the best of luck wherever he ends up. He will certainly find a spot with another team.
CF Cito Gaston
Gaston has been a big contributor to the team. He offers a great solution to injury of any of our OF'ers. Cito gets a lot of playing time as a pinch hitter as well.
C Sonny Ruberto
Sonny played hard but he just didn't have the skills that we needed to keep him around for the money that he was asking for.
P Ken Tatum
Ken was the best relief pitcher that was available in free agency. We could have used some offense but we are still moving along with the thought that pitching wins championship.

Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
1974 Preveiw
The 1974 season should be one to remember. The Padres are coming off the best season in franchise history where they won an astounding 93 games but somehow still managed to finish in second in the division behind the Giants. A lot of things happened in 1973 that lead many to believe the Padres may very well stand a chance to win the division in the coming year.
The lineup has changes slightly as Horace Clarke will find himself batting in the 8th spot. His OBP just wasn’t high enough to warrant him staying in the leadoff spot. That job goes to 1B Dave Hilton. Dave isn’t your prototypical 1B. He doesn’t hit for power but he finds a way to get on base and has decent speed which is everything you can ask for when hitting number one in the lineup.
The rest of the lineup is very strong. Rico Petrocelli is hoping to bounce back from an off year. Dwight Evans and Johnny Grubb continue to get better and Jerry Morales is turning in to one of the better outfielders in the game today. Bob Bailey is always solid at third and will put up good numbers in the five hole for sure.
Catcher is the lone weak offensive spot in the lineup as Ron Slocum is known more for his defense than his bat. This position has been one that the Padres have been looking to upgrade for some time. Pitching however, has proven to be more of a need and therefore has garnered most of the attention to this point. That may change during the season by way of trade.
The pitching staff should once again be strong this year. Mike Caldwell is the obvious number one and Randy Jones is become a very close number two man in the rotation. If they can put up another year like 1973 the Padres are going to be a very hard team to sweep in a series.
The pen is still solid with veterans Mike Corkins, Ken Tatum, and Jerry Bell leading the way. Rookie Jimmy Freeman will find himself in the long reliever spot to start the year but could very well end up in the rotation at some point of someone struggles or gets hurt.
Another rookie will find himself in the starting rotation to begin the year. Randy Sterling will get the nod as the number 4 starter and should do pretty well in his firs season in the bigs. He put up impressive numbers in AAA last year and played very well in the spring.
The minors are a strong point for the Padres. We have several good looking prospects coming through the system. To name a few;
P Rich Mahler (72/85)
P Don Demola (71/87)
P Roy Branch (57/92)
P Al Autry (62/88)
SS Enzo Hernandez (77/93)
SS Frankie Libran (75/90)
1B Jason Thompson (55/82)
There have been a few disappointments in the farm system as well though. Joaquin Andujar doesn’t appear to be the great prospect that we had once hoped. He still finds himself in AA when Jimmy Freeman and Randy Sterling are already at the major league level. He still may develop in to a quality pitcher, but he is taking a bit longer than the Padres would like to see.
Projected Record: 80-82
No way that can be right. They haven't been giving San Diego any credit for a long time. For the last three seasons we have been predicted to finish under .500. Last year we won 93 games and the year before that we won 85.
Farm System: 4th
Scouting: 4th
Medical: 4th
Cash: $6,353,974
Payroll: $2,482,825
Payroll Budget: $3,470,105

1974 Amateur Draft
We really liked Sprowl's potential and we have had very good luck drafting guys that come up with only two pitches. It seems like they can concentrate on those two and can mold them in to some dominant pitches.
Herr is depenadable and durable. He has a great eye. When you get the chance to take a very talented second baseman in the ammy draft you have to jump all over it.
Cooper was the best position player left in the third round and we didn't want to miss out on him.

Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
Hobbs has great potential. He is quite a few years from being ready, but that shouldn't be too much of a concern.
Cliburn was a risk. We really need to upgrade at catcher and there wasn't much in the draft. We are hoping that we can get lucky with him and he will develop in to a major league talent some day.
Dave Ford, well we got lucky with this pick. We found a player in the 6th round that still has decent potential and a shot to make it to the majors someday.

Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
1974 All Star Break
Well...what can I say? The season isn't exactly going as I had hoped that it would. The hitting has just been well, not good. The pitching has been amazing but we can't hit enough to really get anything going. We are playing well. I guess that a few years of success has made me want a division title pretty badly. It's almost as if I'm expecting it a little bit.
Dave Hilton started off the year slowly and found himself down in the number 8 hole pretty quickly. He continued to struggle and Nate Colbert has taken over the first base duties. Nate doesn't hit for much average, at all, but he does hit the ball over the fence quite often which is more than what Dave was doing for us.
As you can see, we have a team ERA of 3.24 which is just crazy to be honest. I haven't had a pitching staff that good in quite some time. Randy Jones and Mike Caldwell continue to pitch well as we head in to the second half of the season. Dave Roberts is contributing alot as well. Randy Sterling is having some rookie growing pains, but overall he has pitched very well, especially in the early part of the year.
Right now we find ourselves 6.5 games out of first place. That isn't an impossible amount to overcome, but I sure would like to be closer. There is still a lot of baseball to go and we should be able to climb back in to this thing. If not, there is always NEXT YEAR!!

Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
1974 Review
It was another disappointing season in 1974. Heh...who would have thought that the Padres would be upset about winning 96 games just 5 seasons ago? Winning has become something of a tradition already. We have enjoyed three winning seasons in a row at this pont and things look very good for the future.
We have a few holes in the lineup that need to be fixed, but we are pretty happy with where the pitching staff sits at this point. Catcher, or First Base will likely be the one thing that we sign this offseason in free agency.
The team played tremendous. We were everything that we had hoped to be. In the end however the Giants just proved to be a little bit better. In just 5 years this team has become a consistent contender. We put fans in the seats and we win games. What more could someone ask for? A World Series!! San Diego fans and ownership are starting to get a little anxious.
Some highlights of the year;
Randy Jones wins 20 games
All 5 starters had an ERA under 4.00
Randy Sterling 16-8, 3.64 as a rookie
Rico Petrocelli .278, 25 HR, 113 RBI

Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
Contract Negotiations
SS Rafael Robles
We thought that this guy might turn in to something valuable but apparently we were wrong. He has been tooling around in AAA for the last couple of seasons and we thought that it was finally time to just let him go.
SP Dave Roberts
Dave has been excellent for us. There was no way that we were going to break up the starting rotation at this point. They played too well last year and Roberts was a big part of that success. Having him on the roster takes a bit of pressure off the big two (Jones, Caldwell).
SS Jerry Davanon
Jerry just wanted too much money. He turned in to quite the SS but we just had too many coming up through the system and with Rico playing every day it wasn't looking good for Jerry to be playing all that much. He was too good to be a bench player and I think we all knew it.
C Ron Slocum
This position has not been one that has been good to us. Every player we have played there has been pretty inept when it comes to offense. Ron was no different. When he asked for over 200K per year, we just couldn't do that. We liked Ron, and we wish him the best of luck.
SS Rico Petrocelli
Rico has been a staple in the middle of the lineup for the Padres and we would like to keep it that way. When his contract is up it will probably either be time for him to retire, or we would be parting ways with him.
LF Johnny Grubb
Johnny has turned in to a star and we took the opportunity to sign him long term. 200K per year is a deal for this guy and we knew it. His health is a little bit of a concern, but at this price I think it is going to be well worth it.
RF Dwight Evans
Evans may have a little bit more potential, and he is certainly going to turn in to more of a power hitter than Grubb. Locking him up for 7 years was a little more costly than Grubb, but at the end it will look like a good deal.
No free agent signings this year. We were looking for a catcher, but the best one out there was Bill Freehan. Not that Bill is a bad player, but we couldn't justify paying over 300K for a guy who hits .250 a year and spends a lot of time recovering from nagging knee injuries.

Do you feel safe trading for a Catcher that has spent most of his time in the Minors?

To be honest I wasn't completely sold on this trade. Libran was one of the young guys that I could afford to lose because I have several other IF prospects that are looking just as good as him if not better.
Vic hasn't gotten the chance to play much but that is because he is sitting behind Carlton Fisk in Boston who is averaging 30+ homers and 100 RBI every season.
I think he is better than what I had for sure, and if I don't like him then I can just dump him at the end of the year when his contract.

1975 Preview
This year has to be the year. That is the rally call of Padres fans all over the state.
The pitching staff is as strong from top to bottom as it has been in any season. We have a couple of guys down in AAA that are more than ready to fill in if we have any issues with the veterans in the pen.
The offense may be the best that the Padres have seen to date. Dwight Evans seems to have his stuff together for a great season. Johnny Grubb is always grea and Dane Iorg gets the chance to play every day this season after an impressive year taking over at first base last season.
Projected Record: 86-76
Finally we get a little bit of respect. It is nice to actually be predicted to win more games than we are going to lose for once.

Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
1975 All Star Break
Disappointment does not even begin to describe the feeling of both GM Barr and the people of San Diego. Despite being 50-38 we find ourselves 8 games out of first place and unable to gain any ground on the dominant Giants.
The team has played very well and through no fault of their own they find themselves on the outside looking in at the moment. The pitching staff has been solid as they have posted a team ERA of under 4.00. The offense has been a little touchy this season as the team batting average is hovering around .260 which is among the worst in the division right now.
The offense is being anchored by Johnny Grubb as he leads the team in both average and home runs at the all star break. His supporting staff hasn't been so bad either. Dwight Evans has put up good power numbers as has Jerry Morales and Rico Petrocelli.
The two aces of the staff, Mike Caldwell and Randy Jones, are pitching woderfully going in to the break. The same cannot be said for the other three in the starting rotation. Jimmy Freeman could find himself in one of those spots during the second half of the season.

Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
At least Randy Jones has turned into a superstar...
What are your plans to combat the Giants' dominance?
-
Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
Randy certainly has turned things around. Caldwell has really turned it on as well and I didn't see that one coming.
At this point I'm not sure what we are going to do do combat the Giants. I don't really have any pieces that I can trade away at this point. I don't want to hurt our future and I think we have a very good team. I have been thinking this year was the year for a while now, and maybe one of these days it will be.
I am thinking that if we can keep the fans interested as we have been doing, we may be able to sign a big name pitcher this offseason and see if that can help sway things in our favor. With that said, we still have a chance this eason to catch them, so we will see what happens.

Doesn't seem to have really hurt the staff though. Randy and Caldwell are still playing great. Those two have been the only consistent pitchers that I have had on the staff so I'm not real sure how to gauge his impact on the pitching staff really.

Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
1975 Season Review
It was another tough year for the Padres. We played hard, and made pretty much no movement with players. We really thought that we had the team to compete this year, and overall we did. We won 96 games during the regular season but it still wasn't enough to overcome the dominant Giants.
The offense played well, the pitching was above average, and really there isn't one big reason why we didn't win the whole thing this year. The fans in San Diego are going to be a little disappointed I'm sure, but they still do have a winning team to watch every year and we have given them everything that they could possibly want.
With a few seasons under most of the players belts, it could be time to start making some moves. There have been many rumors about the future of Clay Kirby. Clay's potential is through the roof but he has yet to really come through for the Padres like they need him to. Minus one good year, Clay has really been below average for most of his career and it seems its time for a change of venue.
To combat the Giants this year, look for the Padres to make a big move to sign a big name starting pitcher, or a dominant bullpen arm.

Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
Contract Negotiations
The end of 1975 brought about some interesting decisions for the Padres. Some that may have people scratching their heads around town.
C Vic Correll
Vic was picked up last year in a trade and everyone thought that he was going to be the answer to the catching problem in San Diego. Apparently GM Barr didn't think this was true. Rather than trying to trade him he was released.
P Rich Troedson
Rich has been a rock in the pen and GM Barr didn't waste any time in signing him to an extension.
P Clay Kirby
Clay was the center piece of trade talks going in to the off season and it was assumed that he would be signed and then traded. This wasn't the case though. GM Barr was hoping that by letting him go it would free up enough money to be very aggressive in the free agent market. That didn't work out as planned as there were no other big name pitchers available this year.
3B Dave Hilton
Dave can still swing the bat and while he isn't starter material, he is a very high quality role player and backup.
CF Cito Gaston
Cito gave the Padres some good years but it was time for him to move on and find another place to hang his hat.
2B Horace Clarke
Horace had used up his days in San Diego. Enzo Hernandez has taken over the full time duties at 2B these days and it doesn't look like he is going to be giving it up at this point.
1B Nate Colbert
Nate never turned things around and it was time to let him go. Colbert appeared to be a big time prospect and was hoped to really lead the offense, but that never happened. The Padres have waited for him for quite some time and finally it had just been long enough.
